3 out of 5 eggsGreat features - Quality concern

Pros: Great features
Network capable
Mobile App capable
Good Sound
Plenty of Inputs

Cons: Only Con is the quality of the components. After 1.75 years of use, my sound started cutting out. At first, a restart of the unit would fix the issue. at 2.1 years, it's nearly been rendered useless. After some research, I believe this unit is plagued with a faulty HDMI board, resulting in the No Audio condition (along with faulty network access). There are several threads among multiple forums on the issue. There is a DIY fix, but I'm not comfortable doing so with my talent level.

Other Thoughts: On an upside, I called Onkyo and stated my no audio issue. They gave me the information to request a one time out-of-warranty (2 years) repair. Hopefully, the request comes through successful. Looking back, I should have had it looked at the second I started having problems since it was within the warranty period. Live and learn.

If not for the faulty component, I would have given this receiver a 5. One of the best $300 I would have ever spent on electronics . Even with the quality concern, still pretty happy with this purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed just after warranty expired

Pros: Good sound
Lots of features
Large number of ports for various inputs

Cons: Automatic calibration didn't with for me
Zone 2 speakers only take analog inputs
Sounds stopped working just after 2-year warrantee expired

Other Thoughts: This receiver worked great until it just recently stopped stress having intermittent sound problems. You would have to restart it to reinitialize the sound to get it working. Finally that stopped working and you had to do a factory reset to get it too work. That just recently stopped working.

Also the net feature would often freeze and then wouldn't work for a long while after restarting the receiver.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat receiver BUT....

Pros: Great receiver while it lasts!

Cons: As the device was reaching it's warranty expiration it started having sound difficulties that are obviously quite common amongst this model on their support forums. Did not realize what was happening to the unit until the sound went totally out after the warranty date. The problem started simply as the port for our DVR going to "sleep" when the DVR was inactive. We would have to reboot our DVR for the port to come back on sound wise. Never had any video issue though. One day though the sound just wouldn't come on and we noticed the Network music function would never initialize.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not stand behind warranty

Pros: Seemed fine when working.

Cons: HDMI stopped working after nearly 1 year of ownership. Nothing in system has changed, suddenly one day no picture on television. Ruled out all other possibilities, it is definitely the receiver at fault. Onkyo support has been a PITA. Sent receiver in, they sent back unrepaired. Support says the receiver was sent to wrong Service Center, but they supplied me with shipping label. Correspondence with Support is slow, they never return calls that they say they will, their Support website is worthless. Run away from this brand.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Reciever

Pros: Great product, Super sound. I love features like DLNA, Audessey, and Mobile App control. I can stream music from my Android to this receiver. Dual zone is another great feature. I have it over a year in my 30X20 basement with Polk Monitor 60 series speakers, RM85 spekaers for four, and JBL for Center CHannel with PS110 single subwoofer. The place rocks. You can enable the HDMI passthrough and intelli control feature. So your single remote can control Blu-Ray player, TV and all those attachment.

Cons: I used the HDMI output in a splitter and it didn't work very well. Probably, not it's fault. DLNA plays only audio and takes a while to buffer.

Other Thoughts: Wireless feature would have been nice.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a good as I heard

Pros: A lot of features for the money

Cons: HDMI will not process a 1080i video signal

Other Thoughts: I have sent the receiver back twice in an effort to get the HDMI video fixed. When I got it back the first time, the USB input was also inoperative as well as the HDMI. Audio passes through OK, but just broken video. If you have to send it back then get Adams to send you a shipping label as I paid the first time out of my pocket.

4 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with it

Pros: Plenty of power. Functions and features are all I need. Lots of inputs.

Cons: There's a 3-5 second (sometimes a few seconds more) delay in audio/video when switching channels on my cable box. Denon video out goes to TV, Cable box goes to receiver--as it should. Screen goes dark and there's no sound momentarily.

Other Thoughts: It's a little flimsy feeling compared to the Yamaha that it replaces.

2 out of 5 eggsGood While It Lasted

Pros: Good video upscaling via HDMI; plenty of inputs and outputs; menus easily navigated; firmware upgrades easily accomplished; good network functionality; plenty of power for most folks.

Cons: Remote is a little clunky; receiver lasted all of 5 months, then it went into the repair shop.

Other Thoughts: I had this in service for 5 months, then the hdmi output quit working. I took it to one of the only two authorized Onkyo repair centers in central Florida. They had it for two weeks, then notified me that the hdmi processing IC is on order from Onkyo and will will take 30 days to receive the part from when it was ordered. I called Onkyo directly in New Jersey, and the guy that answered for tech support was less than friendly. I told him briefly of my situation, and rather than at least humoring me by looking up my particular repair status, he just said that "We don't hold parts here. It will be shipped to the repair shop when we receive it. I get these types of calls all day long". Wow. This confirms what I have read about Onkyo customer service (it sucks), and Onkyo hardware is not what it used to be. Good thing I kept my old Onkyo AVR from 2004 for backup.

Having a piece of electronics in repair for more than 30 days is totally unacceptable. Onkyo needs to step up to the plate.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great until it didn't

Pros: Great unit for the money, tons of features, the OSD is nice for configuration. Sound quality is solid and it natively decodes most formats.

Cons: Worked for a day then died.

Other Thoughts: Put this in with new polk C60SeriesII speakers I also got from newegg. Had the unit jamming out for about 6 hours for a burn-in until it was bed time. We decided to watch a movie later that night and halfway through "Fearless" the audio went out. Picture was still fine. Power cycled the receiver and it started working again for another 20 minutes then it went out again. I have tried everything in the manual: leaving everything unplugged to reset the protection circuit, updating the firmware, restoring factory defaults. I contacted Onkyo support, they said it was a defective unit and that it only covers parts and labor so a defect is not covered and I would have to return it to my retailer "newegg". No problem there, except the unit weighs 30LBS and the return shipping is about $50. That's my real problem and neither Onkyo or Newegg seems willing to help out with the shipping. You would think they would offer discounted return shipping for defective or DOA products they sell.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value - Good stuff

Pros: Many HDMI connections. Good power, multi-zone. Remote works on Comcast cable box and many, many other devices. Mid-night mode, lots of surround modes, HDMI, USB on the receiver front. Metal front panel (not cheap plastic like Pioneer and others).

Cons: Runs pretty hot/warm compared to Dennon it replaced. Must leave entertainment center door open to keep from getting Hot (plenty of room above receiver for breathing room - around a foot and still gets pretty hot). Remote is confusing for my wife due to 3 power buttons (one for tv, one for receiver an one for devices). Gets somewhat confusing b/c you need to tell the remove/receiver what mode or action to take (I'm fine with this - less technical folks may struggle a bit - just a learning curve and getting used to it).

Other Thoughts: Really a very good receiver and great value. For the money, can't go wrong with this unit. I did research and have seen some complaints with HDMI going out/failing but am not having any issues at all. Compared to the Dennon it replaces, this is light years ahead (10 years newer). I'm using it with an LG Blue Ray (the upscaling improves the picture on none HD sources - like netflix or standard videos). Lots of hookups, good power - instantly noticed the bass management was greatly improved over my old receiver. Using this with Energy Take 5 Classic and a AR 12" Powered sub - sounds fantastic. You won't be disappointed with this receiver - just let it breath as she runs pretty warm - hot to touch at times.
