3 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: Numerous inputs including HDMI, Component, and Composite video; analog audio inputs, coaxial, optical, or HDMI for audio. Up to 7.1 surround. Great features such as a default volume upon startup.

Cons: Failed after 3 years. After research, it seems that this and a few other Onkyo models are plagued by inadequate heat dissipation similar to what caused older XBox 360s to fail (red-ring). Basically, how I understand it is, the board is fastened down, but expands when it gets hot. Having nowhere to go, it warps. When it's turned off and cools down, it goes back to the original shape. After doing this many times, the unit eventually becomes unstable, and then produces no sound at all. From what I've read, I'm not the first this happened to.

Other Thoughts: Customer service was nice enough to make a "one-time-only" courtesy repair. I had to pay shipping, but after getting it back, it has worked flawlessly. I would advise against placing any other equipment on top of this unit, placing this unit in a cabinet or on a shelf, or placing it anywhere that the heat dissipation from the top (very large) vent is obstructed. I wish the manufacturers had invested in some heat sinks and a small fan to help with heat dissipation.

5 out of 5 eggsLoss of Audio Extended Warranty

Pros: Excellent audio quality. Lots of input options. Ability to Bi-Amp front speakers. Auto room calibration. Lots of options to tweak your sound just the way you want it.

Cons: Just over 2 years later all the sound quit.
But a quick call to Onkyo and they shipped out a box to send them the receiver to repair free of charge.
Evidently this is a problem that has come up with certain receivers from 2009-2012 that the network chip goes bad causing a range of problems.

Other Thoughts: Onkyo just went a step up in my mind that they are helping everyone with this problem even though we are out of warranty.

2 out of 5 eggsProduct failed after 3 years.

Pros: Numerous inputs including HDMI, Component, and Composite video; analog audio inputs, coaxial, optical, or HDMI for audio. Up to 7.1 surround. Great features such as a default volume upon startup.

Cons: Failed after 3 years. Unit now produces no sound from any source whatsoever. Not even the FM tuner. Too expensive to replace something like this every 3 years. Apparently of much poorer quality than I was lead to believe. Unit is also fairly heavy and produces a great amount of heat.

Other Thoughts: This product had great reviews, but in my opinion they are based on initial impression and Onkyo's quality history. Having had no prior experience with Onkyo, I am left highly disappointed that an item I paid $650 for only lasted 3 years.

3 out of 5 eggsLove it but HDMI switching is sketchy

Pros: I've had this receiver for years and adore the power, sound, and ease of integration.

Cons: After 3 or 4 years, switching between HDMI components hangs. When you switch, you'll get "no signal". I've read this is a known issue and can be fixed under warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I was missing.

Pros: So user friendly. Does everything and more. Great on screen menu. Has explanation of each setting and what it does at the bottom. Lets you adjust everything in real time on your tv screen so you can see and hear the difference. Has adjustments for everything. Also can adjust for each source completely separately! On audio, turned Dolby on, level to high, and subwoofer came alive for tv source. Still finding minor settings that make a huge difference! If you're not happy, you're not doing it right!!!

Cons: Wish had more HDMI inputs. Not really a con. Doubt if others have more. No real manual, but so user friendly and comes with disc.

Other Thoughts: No problems of any kind. First used WIFI dongle because of location from router. As soon as plugged everything in, all ran perfect. Uploaded new firmware. Hit NET button, full screen came up on tv. hit pandora and was on in seconds... Remote has MY TV, MY MUSIC, MY MOVIE. Hit 1 button and everything you need turns on to make it happen. Like magic. Unit figures it out, I didn't set anything. Just the way everything is plugged in with HDMI. It knows, hit My Movie and BD comes on for movie, 3D. Very Happy. Researched for years really. Finally couldn't pass this deal. Friends bought same.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: I've had this receiver for over a year. I haven't had a single regret. I think this receiver could compete with a lot of $1000 range receivers in terms of features and sound quality.Once you get a good understanding of the available features and carefully calibrate with the Audyssey tool, the sound quality is simply amazing.

It's possible to run up to a 9.2 setup on this receiever. Yup, you could have 2 front speakers, 1 center, 2 surround, 2 front high, 2 front wide, and two subwoofers. I imagine it sounds amazing.

Cons: Not the loudest A/V receiver you'll hear

Other Thoughts: Tips for awesome sound quality:

- Measure out your speaker setup. The center of the listening area should be your head.

- Run a full calibration with the included Audyssey mic. Place the mic realistically.

Audyssey XT does an amazing job at automatically EQ'ing all your speakers and setting the volume levels and sound delay. Each speaker blends perfectly.

- The following receiver options are recommended:

1) Set your Audyssey curve to 'Music' for almost everything. 'Music' basically means a flat curve, it's not specific for music. 'Movie' mode however is specific for Hollywood releases. Only use it for movies, not TV.

2) Dolby Volume is recommended instead of Dynamic Volume. Dynamic Volume raises the volume levels of the surround speakers too high.

3) For upmixing stereo content to surround sound, DTS Neo:6 Music listening mode with the center width option set to '1' is the best, for everything (not just music). Trust me, I tested a bunch.

4) For surround stuff,

2 out of 5 eggsExcellent...... while it was working!

Pros: Good sound, THX Certified, lots of features for the price compared to competing brands

Cons: Had to do firmware update right out of the box

Other Thoughts: For the first week the receiver was excellent. Started noticing a speaker popping noise coming from the right front. Then the noise would variate through the front speakers. Sent back to Newegg for a replacement. Received the new one and installed it today. After doing a firmware update the receiver wont turn on for any more than 10 seconds. I push the power button, the receiver starts up then a clicking noise then the receiver shuts itself off. So needless to say, I just off the phone with Newegg and I am sending this back for a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow-up

Pros: Great system. Good sound. No setbacks or malfunctions yet.

Cons: Nothing to speak of.

Other Thoughts: Following up on my previous post: Downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade without a hitch. Re-ran the speaker calibration system and it went through with no malfunctions. Love the system. I could use some deeper bass, but I don't know if that's the system or my speakers. Great system.
