Built to exacting standards to bring the best out of your music, movies, and gaming content, Onkyo’s HT-S3400 packs a full-featured A/V receiver coupled with a quality six-piece speaker set. To handle the latest Blu-ray, gaming, and cable/satellite devices, the receiver sports four latest HDMI inputs with support for 3D video, lossless audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and an Audio Return Channel. A generous selection of digital and analog A/V inputs makes it easy to hook up your video camera, game console and more. And rounding out the connection highlights is a Universal Port that lets you connect peripherals such as an optional iPod/iPhone dock.

The receiver incorporates high-quality TI Burr-Brown audio DACs, PLL jitter-cleaning circuitry to preserve signal accuracy, and a new Advanced Music Optimizer to enhance the fidelity of compressed audio files. Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume work to optimize your audio experience, while an overlaid on-screen display allows seamless adjustment of the system’s settings during a session.

A superbly balanced 5.1-channel speaker set with a powerful 8-inch subwoofer and 660W total power completes the package. Taking the hassle out of home theater, the HT-S3400 is a rock-solid foundation for affordable home entertainment.

  • newegg HDMI with 3D Ready and Audio Return Channel The HDMI implementation on the HT-S3400’s receiver supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel, along with numerous high-resolution formats. 3D video brings exciting possibilities to home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs now on the market. Meanwhile, the Audio Return Channel allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” via HDMI to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.
  • newegg Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio With the integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoders, enjoy lossless, ultra-realistic HD surrounding sound like it was meant to be.
  • newegg CinemaFILTER Technology CinemaFILTER, developed by Onkyo, is a solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater, ensuring the smoothest sound at any volume.
  • newegg 192 KHz/24-Bit Video DACs Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.
  • newegg Theater-Dimensional Onkyo's exclusive Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. In addition, Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
  • newegg Audyssey EQ, Dynamic EQ & Dynamic Vol Audyssey EQ for System Equalization removes much of the distortion caused by speaker enclosures and the typical room environment and produces far superior sound than on comparable products that lack correction capabilities. Audyssey Dynamic Volume maintains the desired listening level for all content while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ for Loudness Correction solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality at lower volumes.

3 out of 5 eggsImportant - Onkyo Press release

Pros: good sound... easy set up....

Cons: No HDMI up-convert...

Other Thoughts: Onkyo has a press release acknowledging the shutdown issue. Those who have had issues go here:
http://www.onkyousa.com/press_releases.cfm?id=253

You can enter your serial number and if it is an affected model, they will send you shipping supplies to send back and have repaired.
Please note: I've have not gone through the entire process yet, so I'm not sure how smooth it will be. But I wanted to let people know the option exists.

2 out of 5 eggsAlready has blown port...

Pros: Great sound quality

Cons: Bad ports, lousy customer service

Other Thoughts: After having this unit for 8 months the cbl/sat port already is blown. They knowingly sold items that had been recalled yet have given us a hard time about the repair or replacement of the receiver. It took a month for Onkyo to respond to my inquiry about the warranty. We now have to pay for shipping to a repair facility and they will then determine if it is able to be fixed. I will never buy another Onkyo product again. I do not like to waste my money on inferior products.

1 out of 5 eggsHDMI output failed after one month

Pros: Good sound

Cons: Speakers are plastic, HDMI output failed after one month, poor customer service

Other Thoughts: In order to fix the HDMI issue, Onkyo wanted me to send the receiver, at my expense, to a repair facility 200 miles away. I spent several hours on hold for customer service and left multiple voicemails that went unanswered.

A search for HT-R390 HDMI issues will show you that this is a very common problem with this receiver.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Sound

Cons: After a few months of owning this. The controller doesn't work and NOW IT TURNS OFF BY ITSELF. I sent it back twice and now I have this piece of junk in my house.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective BUT!

Pros: Sound when it worked was fantastic!! you can't beat the price mine had no white noise issues like others did but did do the turning off part. I loved it since my neighbors could tell we got an awesome system which now I reworked so my neighbors aren't bothered much.

Cons: Mine was unfortunately one of the ones that had the shut off problem it started late in my ownership since I only used my system for movies and music.

Other Thoughts: I am currently trying to get it fixed and the problem is known to ONKYO and currently they "seem" to be trying to make it better so until then I gave them 2 eggs even though I found this link from another poster and I am on hold to get my info I know they are no longer in stock but just in case people look see what they can do here is what you need to know.
I have to say though while it worked awesome set up was easy cords were a little short for the rear speakers but buy longer cords and fixed. I would have given it 4.5 eggs but because of the issues with it and the hassle of dealing with long wait times and now the waiting for the label I was told by the Support Rep that it shouldn't take more then a few days for them to check the unit fix it and send it back so we will see but if they are on the up and up like I am seeing I say I would buy another one through them in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsRecalled even though I'm satisfied

Pros: Great sound, easy set-up, easy recall process

Cons: speaker buzz, gets a little warm

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit almost 6 months ago. A few days ago I noticed a speaker was buzzing so I checked the website and the unit had been recalled. Onkyo is sending me a box to repair it.
Even though I'll be without a sound system for a while I am quite content. The unit is tremendously loud when I want, sounds clear and accurate on both streaming media on a network and direct from ps3 or laptop, and, honestly, the speaker buzz wasn't that bad.
I see this unit is no longer being sold, so this review is almost pointless, but moral of the story- Onkyo made a quality product and is standing by their customers when something went wrong. That being said, I am happy.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Until it Wasn't

Pros: Inexpensive
Good Sound
Feature Rich
3D Capable

Cons: Terrible Support

Other Thoughts: After working fine for several months, mine stopped worked. Audio works, but HDMI video works less than 2% of the time now.

I reached out to Onkyo Support. After responding to my first message they've stopped responding.

The unit is great, but if it goes down on you, don't expect an RMA.

1 out of 5 eggsKnown Defect, Still Sold

Pros: Seemed fine until it broke in the same way it broke for tons of other people here, I somehow missed the reviews here, which were made before it was sold with a known defect. This speaks poorly for Onkyo and Newegg.

Cons: Just like many other folks here, the system worked fine until one day it automatically kicked off every time after just five to 10 seconds. I feel totally cheated by Onkyo and Newegg. Will see how they treat me now. Once you know something is obviously defective, you don't keep selling, unless you want to destroy you own reputation. My advice: don't buy from either of these merchants.
