More about THX-
THX ensures what you hear through this Onkyo is precisely what was recorded. Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is ten to twelve feet, and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX certification, the TX-NR616 had to meet the most demanding standards for home cinema audio quality and performance.

Onkyo TXNR616
TX-NR616: an exceptionally refined and affordable THX netwrork receiver

Easy, Live Source Selection
This receiver incorporates InstaPrevue visual port management technology, making input source selection much easier. InstaPrevue provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected via HDMI. You no longer have to remember that your gaming console is connected to Port 3, or your BD player to Port 1, for example- you can see what's playing and choose accordingly.

Watch Your Smartphone Content on TV
The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Use the receiver's remote to control playback from your phone as it receives a handy recharge.

  • Audyssey Dynamic EQ® maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.
  • Audyssey Dynamic Volume® automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content, for example, during commercial breaks, while optimizing the dynamic range.

1 out of 5 eggsNot happy with Onkyo

Pros: Originally it worked

Cons: 2 years later it is not working and from all of the searches available of the problem, it is a known problem. By known, I mean Onkyo is aware the problem with the HDMI exist and the only solution is for you to ship the 25 lb weight to their service center at your cost. It appears that Onkyo has been aware of this issue for years in this and other models of their receivers and has chosen not to inform their customers of at least the potential of seeing the problem and yes, take it to a local dealer and let them either return it to Onkyo Service Center or repair it. When you pay over $400 plus for a receiver you expect the company to stand behind it and take care of any issues which might occur. One year before purchasing this receiver I purchase a Denon and it's still going strong and is used more often in a more demanding (volume and power wise) environment. I recommend staying away from Onkyo products.

1 out of 5 eggsIt will blow!!!

Pros: Features and price were a huge plus.

Cons: Worked great for about 6 months then just blew. It literally blew with a loud bang and had smoke pouring out of the top right side. I unplugged everything from it and let it sit for a week. Plugged in just the power corded and turned it on and got a Check SP Wire error. 15 seconds later it had the same loud band with more smoke. Unplugged it for good this time. Will never buy Onkyo again, neither should you!

1 out of 5 eggsHeat Bombs waiting to Blow

Pros: These receivers have many standard features with on screen menus. Network and SMB network ability to play audio files from cell or home network shared libraries.

Cons: Heat, Heat, and more Heat. Must be sure to either have a house fan blow on them or setup a PC tower fan to run off the usb port or stand alone power supply. I have purchased 3 different Onkyo's in less than 2 years time. 2 of which have broke directly from heat related failure. I have since switched to Yamaha and will never ever by an Onkyo product again. Waste of hard earned dollars.

Other Thoughts: Buy some other product.

2 out of 5 eggsNo HDMI video output

Pros: Great receiver up until it decided to die overnight

Cons: After a year of the unit working flawlessly, it decided to drop all HDMI video signal. I purchased this receiver to replace an older model without HDMI connections; the HDMI connections were the primary reason for buying it. I've always used Onkyo... I love the sound they put out and up until this unit stopped working, I was quite happy with the video it put out. I researched getting the warranty work done and found that the closest service center is in MI (I'm in WI) and I'll have to ship it to them for repair. Users who have sent units in for repair talk about it taking 2+ months plus just to get it diagnosed and then more time to order parts, fix it, ship it back, etc. I will be having some words with Onkyo if I have to go through the same scenario with my return. I am NOT happy with the way Onkyo handles repairs... send me a refurbed unit and send mine in for repair instead of making me wait for months on getting mine back. Or in this receiver's case, exchange it for a newer model that isn't a lemon... this one appears to be a complete piece of garbage and is failing for about 1/2 of the users that bought it all with similar issues. Completely unacceptable Onkyo!!!!!

Other Thoughts: Seriously considering my loyalties to Onkyo after getting one of their problem receivers and finding out how they deal with customer product repairs. When the product works, I love it but there is absolutely no excuse for any company to make something and then not support their own repairs/replacements/etc. That is just plain poor customer service and not standing behind the products that they produce.

3 out of 5 eggsGood sound, lots of junk

Pros: Good sound quality. The speakers work. Initial setup went moderately well. Many ports and configuration options.

Cons: Main HDMI out does not work properly. 3D does not work. Based on the manual, I figure setting Monitor Out to Main and resolution to Through or Auto would do the trick. Also tried 720p. Also tried each option under Source Setup > Picture---Through, Auto, 720p---after adjusting to Through, etc. It simply does not work. This means that 3D does not work on Xbox or PC. There's nothing else 3D needs to work for, so this receiver does not support 3D.
It refuses to allow the signal to pass through, and it refuses to not upscale the signal. When I change the resolution, the receiver refuses to change its output.

Other Thoughts: Bypassed receiver in order to get a proper 720p 120hz signal directly to the projector so that it could be detected as a device. But this requires two HDMI cables - one for audio, and one for video. That's not normal; neither is it acceptable.

4 out of 5 eggsVery happy

Pros: Lots of features and settings allowing for customizing for individual preferences.

Updated firmware 1st thing. Have had no issues with HDMI as others reported. Solid video and return audio via HDMI.

Cons: There are lots of options making setup difficult via the front panel. Save some frustration and hook it up to a TV for setup.

Front panel labels are a bit hard to read due to low contrast text color.

Other Thoughts: Very happy with the performance and ease of use once setup. Solid receiver.

2 out of 5 eggsBuzzer

Pros: This has the Pandora Radio feature where you can listen to music from the Net. I have it hooked to my old Pioneer receiver and have sound pumped throughout the house.

Cons: The receiver buzzes loudly.

3 out of 5 eggsProduct Information Misleading

Pros: It sounds great! The sound is much purer than the Sony ES it replaced and easier to hear quiet dialog in movies. It still has great dynamic range and lots of bells and whistles (read the product marketing for what it supports). It has an auto-tuning microphone included and will tune your sound perfectly to your listening position(s).

7 HDMI ports that can be programmed

Decent NET functionality to play DLNA and Internet Radio, Pandora, etc. Could use more applications or the ability to add more in this space though.

Decent iPhone / iPod connector (on Front USB only) makes for a digital quality sound input, BUT you have to fire up a TV screen to navigate to what you want to listen to from your iPhone. Not tried playing movies this way as I don't transfer them to my phone but maybe a project for the weekend when I have time. Not sure what the use of the rear USB is for other than uploading firmware updates manually rather than via the network. Doesn't seem to do much else.

It probably has a heap of other hidden functionality and features but as you have to read the 100+ page PDF Manual to get information I haven't bothered to read the whole thing yet, even though I bought this thing 6 months ago. The manual is just about detailed enough to get you up and running but lacks advanced information. For that you have to scour blogs and FAQs.

Cons: I bought this to replace a 7:1 Sony DA2400ES that ran the media in my lounge as it had ran out of HDMI ports. The Sony had two powered zones so I had one hooked up in 7:1 sound and one zone out on to the deck in stereo. It sounded great - just didn't have enough HDMI ports for all my BD / DVD / ATV / Mac Mini / MPC / and other gadgets. The product material said 7:2 and 3 zone. What it failed to tell you was that its not REALLY 3 zones and 7:2 audio. You have to sacrifice two of your speakers inside to use them outside taking the unit to a 5:1 + stereo system. As for Zone 3 forget it!

Zone 2 and 3 are ANALOG only with heinously cheap connectors that won't accept anything bigger than a 14 gauge wire. (I'm sure all of us would expect to use something a lot bigger and better than the wire these connectors are designed for!)

The net result was that I had to go buy a SECOND amplifier to power my deck speakers and will need to buy a THIRD amplifier to use Zone 3 when I hook it up to another room in the house. Switch and bait marketing if ever I saw it in action!

Minus 2 eggs for misleading product information - I would have bought a different (Onkyo) system had I known.

Other Thoughts: Some functions can be setup from a web browser once you have it connected to your home network making it easy to configure things like Internet Radio. However only a few things can be setup this way and you need to figure out the IP address the thing is on, either by navigating through interfaces on the thing or looking at your network ARP table. It would be nice if Onkyo allowed you to configure the whole thing this way - it would be much faster than navigating it's internal menus.

The NET functionality provides quite a few applications for network media - Pandora, etc. and a couple of apps for playing DLNA music even if that music is on network share, NAS server etc. but NOTHING for playing movies even if connected directly to the system via USB. Its a bit disappointing for a quality unit like this. It means you have to plug in a Media PC or MAC or a jailbroken Apple TV to play your network movie collection. I haven't found a way yet of downloading and installing additional applications yet so not even sure if this is user configurable or locked code by Onkyo. Be interested to find out if anyone has been able to do this!

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: All the features you want

Cons: Terrible Customer Service
Faulty Equipment

Other Thoughts: Trust me... check the reviews all around the net. Onkyo is hot smelly garbage. I bought this receiver thinking, maybe some people got a lemon. Nope, they are all junk. Anyone that owns it for more than 3 months will tell you it is bound to break. Stick with something that maybe has a few less features but will last. Or wait until these features come down in price.
