Easy Settings Changes3D Video and Audio Return Channel via HDMI

Four HDMI inputs on allow seamless integration of high-definition devices such as Blu-ray players, cable/satellite tuners, and gaming consoles. HDMI implementation on this receiver also supports an Audio Return Channel, allowing TV audio to be sent upstream to the A/V receiver. That means you can enjoy television programs in magnificent Onkyo sound. HDMI also supports 3D video and other popular high-resolution formats.

iPhone iPod dockDirect Digital Connection: The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound

The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, and you can use the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital -rather than analog- form through the direct digital connection.

Amazing AmplifierONKYO's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) Delivers Higher Fidelity

WRAT is a suite of innovative technologies developed to improve signal-to-noise ratios, and to enhance the fidelity of amplified audio. The technologies work to reduce noise across the frequency range, guaranteeing a well-balanced performance even with the most dynamic soundtracks. It achieves this by employing a low negative-feedback amplifier design; using “closed” ground-loop circuitry to cancel noise from individual circuits; and by ensuring high instantaneous-current capability to cancel reflex energy and impedance fluctuations from the speakers. The WRAT design has made Onkyo AVRs the firm favorite among discerning audio enthusiasts.

Select Your Blu-ray playerEasy Access For Settings Changes

The overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. On-screen set-up menus appear over the video image you're watching so you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to stop the program and switch to a different screen to access menus.

Internet RadioAudyssey Room Correction: You'll Hear the Difference

(1) Audyssey 2EQ tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics.
(2) Audyssey Dynamic EQ® maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.
(3) Audyssey Dynamic Volume® automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content- for example, during commercial breaks- while optimizing the dynamic range.

1 out of 5 eggsHT-S5500

Pros: Solid sound system while it worked

Cons: HDMI Inputs stopped working after 2 years

Other Thoughts: 2 out of 4 HDMI inputs stopped working. One of the inputs works sometimes. Disappointed that it all started happening after the 2 year mark!

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

Pros: I read the reviews, but took a gamble on a black Friday deal. Once I received one that wasn't damaged setup was easy. Thank you new egg for making defective product returns easy! For about a month things were great, the sound was great and there were no issues. I thought I'd received one without any issues...

Cons: The subwoofer quit working after about a month. I was able to get it working again by unplugging it occasionally.

Then the receiver stopped working. I looked through the troubleshooting guide and tried the suggested actions, no luck. Now I am wadding through the warranty process.

Other Thoughts: I wish I'd spent the money for a better system.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Wow, just wow.... sound is amazing. only use it on about 12-16 and rattles the house. very well made. a whole lot bigger than we thought it was going to be when we bought it. Truly is an amazing sounding system, cannot say this enough.

Cons: Sometimes with using the hdmi throughputs, gibberish appears on the screen. For just a second or two. not sure why.

Other Thoughts: we used an aftermarket speaker wire right out of the box so we cannot attest to the stuff it comes with, but it really does sound amazing. Highly recomended

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Sounds great and it feels solid. The speakers feel solid and have a nice finish.

Cons: The reciever gets fairly hot, but this is probably normal. I couldn't use the automatic setup because it turned the subwoofer to "off" and I am not sure why. It sounds fine without the auto-calibration, though.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for my Application

Pros: Low cost HT in a box. Works great for my application. Easy setup and installation. The input signal is automatically detected and correctly decoded by the receiver. It has optical, coaxial, HDMI, component, and USB inputs. Over the air broadcast 5.1 audio from my HDTV optical audio out sounds great through this receiver. This receiver decodes DTS-HD-Master and Dolby TrueHD audio from Blu-Ray disc played on my PC through HDMI output from graphics card and passes video to HDTV. Radio has good reception.

Cons: HD audio sounds great but other audio signals (i.e. turntable, radio, etc...) sound so-so. Not a system for audiophile.

Other Thoughts: Have not had any trouble with subwoofer so far. Nor any other issues. Good entry level HT audio system.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price range

Pros: I bought the system on a black Friday deal for 200$. It was well worth the money.

Good speakers
Good highs
Good mids
Not complicated

Cons: So-so bass
Optical input from my computer has problems now and then.

Other Thoughts: For the price, I wasn't disappointed. Just keep in mind this is a mid range system, it will provide pretty good sound, but not blow you away performance....

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Reliability, Poor Performance

Pros: Low Cost

Cons: There is an issue with Dolby PL II x circuitry. The PL II x mode upconverts sources which have less than 7.1 channels to 7.1 channels. There is a loud popping noise when this circuit changes upconversion modes. Any time I change a TV channel and this circuit changes mode, there is a loud popping noise. Basically, it creates a loud popping noise almost every time I change channels on my TiVo. This is a very cheap, low quality receiver. I definitely do NOT recommend this unit.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome system

Pros: The System was very easy to setup and the Audyssey Room Correction was easy to go through and get the best sound out of the system. If you are looking for a great surround sound experience on a budget this is the system for you.

Cons: the speakers are a little larger than i expected. especially the front center speakers.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased a bunch of sound sound systems through the years, some for much more than this, and this is by far the best HTIB I have owned. Especially since it is $100 cheaper than when I bought it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mid range system

Pros: Easy setup, decent amount of cabling, and sounds amazing. With the system tuned using the Audyssey mic, the bass was too low for my liking (I like to feel the artillery in war movies.) but the system is easy enough to self tune. Bass shakes windows and cabinets, highs are piercing but not crackled.

Cons: The speakers have standard mountings, which suck for any real mounted application. I'd prefer a screw mount like some other comparable manufacturers use. The OSD itself is kind of outdated, but it's not difficult to use if you know what you're doing.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if it had a better selection of presets for audio, maybe a better EQ system built in. An option to disable the sub auto on\off would be nice as well.
