Onkyo TXNR717
A Major Benefit- Hear Precisely What the Director Intended

THX ensures what you hear through this Onkyo is precisely what was recorded. Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is ten to twelve feet, and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX certification, the TX-NR717 had to meet the most demanding standards for home cinema audio quality and performance.

More than a home theater processor, the TX-NR717 allows you to access music on PC, stream from Spotify, explore online radio, or connect your iPod®/iPhone® to one of two USB ports. You can distribute any of these various stereo sources to other rooms for house-wide entertainment. With a total of 10 HDMI® connections, this receiver converges HD content from all your components—even your smart phone media via a frontside MHL/HDMI—and provides easy input selection with InstaPrevue™ technology. HDMI also enables intuitive GUI with overlaid Quick Set-Up menu. Visually managing settings and playback—even across multiple zones—is easy with the Onkyo Remote App for iPhone and Android phones. Direct Digital Connection:
The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound
The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, and you can use the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection.

Have an Apple TV? The Onkyo remote is preset to control Apple TV.
Use it with your Onkyo A/V Receiver. It's all integrated, and it all works together beautifully.

When additional High or Wide channels are added, their directional and ambient effects are fully enveloping. These three expansion systems offer you freedom to choose your preferred speaker setup. Audyssey MultEQ XT32: You'll Hear The Difference
Audyssey's top-of-the-line room correction suite equalizes the sound to suit the unique acoustics of your listening space. High-resolution filters are applied to all channels- including subwoofers- based on information collected from more than 10,000 individual control points across eight measurement positions.

On Screen Display
Easy Access For Settings Changes
The overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. On-screen set-up menus appear over the video image you're watching so you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to stop the program and switch to a different screen to access menus.

Onkyo is energy efficient
Save Power With Hybrid Standby
Hybrid Standby provides 'HDMI through' functionality while the receiver sleeps, so you don't have to fully power up to watch a Blu-ray or play a game using just your TV's sound. The receiver also maintains a local network connection when on Hybrid Standby mode, so you can switch the unit on at any time using the Onkyo remote apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

multi-room playback
Powered Zone 2/3 and Zone 2/3 Line-Outs
You can assign Front High or Front Wide channel outputs to power speakers in two other rooms of your home. You can play music in the main room and Zone 2- or, alternatively, Zone 3- at the same time, or play a different audio source in either room. Use your stereo amp to power one of the rooms and enjoy any audio source from the receiver in all three zones simultaneously, controllable with Onkyo Remote Apps for iPhone and Android phone, and Kindle Fire. Integrated house-wide entertainment is now a reality.

4k upscaling
4k Upscaling: Astoundingly Accurate Detail
On a compatible 4K wide-screen display, this receiver will upscale standard video sources, making your Blu-rays and DVDs pop with more cinematic detail than ever before. The versatile Qdeo video processor uses algorithms to enlarge to 4k the video you're playing, while also erasing video jaggies and feathering. The results are dazzlingly detailed images.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Downward Spiral

Pros: Flexibility: This receiver comes with a plethora of features and seemed to be a great price. Additionally, Onkyo have a great history when it comes to build and sound quality.

Cons: Build Quality and reliability: Apparently all the good histories that Onkyo adhered to are just that - history. There has been an inexorable deterioration in this receiver's performance.

It started with the network capability failing, thereby rendering all those juicy apps irrelevant. The latest problem has been the increasingly slow audio switching between inputs which is so bad that that there is actually no audio switching at all most of the time.

In order to get any sound at all (other than my profane ravings) the receiver has to be turned on and off and fiddled with like a man trying to crank start a 1920's bi-plane - repeatedly.

Other Thoughts: My previous receiver purchase was an Onkyo also and it lasted longer than this one (a hair), until the DSP chip started to fail. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing this brand again...

Pros: Works fine for a year.

Cons: Do not buy. The board fails due to heating. Replacing the board is equivalent to a new unit price. Support poor.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat receiver when on sale

Pros: Plenty of HDMI inputs, you can hook (2) TVs to it, (2) subs. I have yet to run into anything I couldn't connect.

It's even future proof with Dolby THX & 4K support.

Everything on this receiver is a pro! You will not find a better receiver at this price point.

My brother has had an Onkyo for years in his garage. It sees every weather possible and is still working.

Cons: The main con and I'm not sure it's Onkyo's fault, is the HDMI control with other components. When I turn off the TV to listen to something that doesn't require it, the TV goes off and switches to TV speaker for some reason. Pressing up or down on the receiver volume switched it back to the Amp. Not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: The best part is, if you run into trouble, Onkyo's support people actually work from your receiver and they easy to understand.

Something like this needs good supports.

4 out of 5 eggsSeems like a solid performer

Pros: Nice to look at. Sounds good when paired with the correct speakers, like the infinity primus 363 which can be had for one hundred seven shipped each. Selectable impedance of 4 ohm and 6 ohm.... not sure why there is not on for 8 ohm...? Any comments on this?

Cons: I have some questions concerning video output size when set for cable signal.... there is typically a small black bar on either side of the screen, regardless of the tv aspect ratio setting. This is not so for blue ray disc though. I have it on a $1200. SOLA power conditioner, to make sure it is protected. There is some delay when switching video signals or when turning on the TV.

Other Thoughts: As I stated, it sounds very good when paired with a good set of speakers. I have a classical music background and I am enjoying it.... I would recommend pairing it with infinity primus 363 which can be bought at Fr** for a little over 100. each. I bought five Polk Monitor 60's and they definitely do not sound as good to my ear. I can't speak for how the Monitor 70's or above sound. With Primus 363's I do not really need to run my Klipsch powered subwoofer as there is enough bass in the sound for my ears.

5 out of 5 eggsOnkyo TX-NR717

Pros: Great AV receiver. Got all the bells and whistles and save more than 50% off because it's a last year model. This receiver is better than most receivers in the market now at the same price. THX feature is great.

Cons: None so far. Some reviews said there is HDMI issues...but mine worked great out of the box. And was box in a separate box for shipping. Great service and product.

5 out of 5 eggsCan't say enough good things about this receiver

Pros: * Incredible sound; well balanced and clear
* Very easy setup (I'm pretty competent and didn't even need the manual)
* EZ integration with home music server via wired Ethernet
* Pandora sounds great

Cons: * Remote is somewhat confusing and could be improved; buttons are small and hard to see in darkened room
* Can only access music not videos and pictures on home server (this is spelled out in manual); need to copy to USB drive for access
* Spotify requires premium subscription to use
* On screen UI could be more modern

Other Thoughts: I've only had this for a few days but it is a huge improvement over my previous Onkyo with excellent functionality, clear and rich sound. I'd highly recommend this. Was planning on buying the Onkyo TX-NR626 but at $429.99 (this price was only available for about a week) this was less expensive and had a lot more features. I have wired Ethernet at my stereo console so the lack of built-in wifi wasn't an issue. Just hooked it up to the 2nd Ethernet port on my DirecTV DVR and it immediately connected.

1 out of 5 eggsOnkyo

Pros: It sounded great great options were great the first 23 months one month short of warranty! I really loved it best receiver I ever had, and then the problem started HDMI port when bad

Cons: Onkyo has no customer service you must package your receiver up send it to an independent repair shop they do not have a factory warranty service it will cost you at least $50 to ship it depending on how much insurance you want to put on it only to get back and not have it work would not recommended hope you don't receive it to anybody's and if you read the reviews on the independent shops he wouldn't send a toasted to them needless to say I don't have to buy another receiver and it certainly won't be oykno

Other Thoughts: If you do a search you'll see this problem with the HDMI ports is a problem with just about every Onkyo receiver made I hope this review will help somebody make the right decision

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Choice

Pros: I realized that this receiver was a major upgrade for me when I heard the sound. It supports a wide range of high end formats. It was easy to setup. It let me know that one of my speakers had an issue when my last one didn't.

The auto sound management features make a huge difference. I no longer need to up the volume to hear dialog and rush to lower the volume before the explosions blow my speakers. I always hated that.

It has two HDMI outputs which was the deciding factor for me. I have a TV and a projector. I would have had to pay about $300 more to get 2 output by another brand.

Cons: The only issue I have is the delay with format syncing. When the input signal changes resolution (for example, 1080 to 720 or Dolby to DTS), there is about 3 seconds of no screen or sound until it figures out what the output should be. This usually only happens when you first start a movie, but it will happen when Netflix dynamically downgrades or upgrades the quality during a showing. That is when it gets annoying. Doesn't happen often and it may not happen to you if you have a better Internet connection.

There is also a 1-2 second delay for the sound to return after pausing a movie. The video continues, but the sound has that short delay.

Other Thoughts: I only broke one egg for the cons I stated since all other aspects of the receiver are awesome. Perhaps Onkyo can fix it with a firmware update, dunno. I would buy this receiver again.

1 out of 5 eggsZone 2/3 are analog only

Pros: All the HDMI inputs, there is no drop of video quality from source device through the receiver

Cons: I bought this unit specifically for the Powered Zones 2/3 I read many write ups but Onkyo fails (purposely) to mention that Zone 2/3 will not work on Digital which means all the HDMI inputs I have will not play Zone 2/3. Having multi zones is why I bought this unit as we do entertaining and I want to isolate the party music in the game room, deck and pool side. If having multi zones is important I would pass on this one...too late for me to return.
