Onkyo TXNR717
A Major Benefit- Hear Precisely What the Director Intended

THX ensures what you hear through this Onkyo is precisely what was recorded. Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is ten to twelve feet, and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX certification, the TX-NR717 had to meet the most demanding standards for home cinema audio quality and performance.

Direct Digital Connection:
The Cleanest Your iPod Can Sound
The front-panel USB port lets you play MP3 and AAC stored in an iPod/iPhone, and MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC audio files stored on a flash-memory device, and you can use the system's own remote for track selection and playback. Your music will sound much cleaner and clearer, as the audio signal is transported in digital rather than analog form through the direct digital connection.

Have an Apple TV? The Onkyo remote is preset to control Apple TV.
Use it with your Onkyo A/V Receiver. It's all integrated, and it all works together beautifully.

MHL
Three High Performance Sound Expansion Systems:
Audyssey DSX®, Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz, and DTS Neo:X™
When additional High or Wide channels are added, their directional and ambient effects are fully enveloping. These three expansion systems offer you freedom to choose your preferred speaker setup. Audyssey DSX expands 5.1 sources to include Wide or Height channels. The Dolby system adds Height channels and stereo source expansion, while DTS Neo:X offers Wides or Heights.

On Screen Display
Easy Access For Settings Changes
The overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature makes changing the settings on your A/V receiver quick and easy. Onkyo is energy efficient
Save Power With Hybrid Standby
Hybrid Standby provides 'HDMI through' functionality while the receiver sleeps, so you don't have to fully power up to watch a Blu-ray or play a game using just your TV's sound. The receiver also maintains a local network connection when on Hybrid Standby mode, so you can switch the unit on at any time using the Onkyo remote apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

multi-room playback
Powered Zone 2/3 and Zone 2/3 Line-Outs
You can assign Front High or Front Wide channel outputs to power speakers in two other rooms of your home. You can play music in the main room and Zone 2- or, alternatively, Zone 3- at the same time, or play a different audio source in either room. Use your stereo amp to power one of the rooms and enjoy any audio source from the receiver in all three zones simultaneously, controllable with Onkyo Remote Apps for iPhone and Android phone, and Kindle Fire. Integrated house-wide entertainment is now a reality.

4k upscaling
4k Upscaling: Astoundingly Accurate Detail
On a compatible 4K wide-screen display, this receiver will upscale standard video sources, making your Blu-rays and DVDs pop with more cinematic detail than ever before. The versatile Qdeo video processor uses algorithms to enlarge to 4k the video you're playing, while also erasing video jaggies and feathering. The results are dazzlingly detailed images.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Choice

Pros: I realized that this receiver was a major upgrade for me when I heard the sound. It supports a wide range of high end formats. It was easy to setup. It let me know that one of my speakers had an issue when my last one didn't.

The auto sound management features make a huge difference. I no longer need to up the volume to hear dialog and rush to lower the volume before the explosions blow my speakers. I always hated that.

It has two HDMI outputs which was the deciding factor for me. I have a TV and a projector. I would have had to pay about $300 more to get 2 output by another brand.

Cons: The only issue I have is the delay with format syncing. When the input signal changes resolution (for example, 1080 to 720 or Dolby to DTS), there is about 3 seconds of no screen or sound until it figures out what the output should be. This usually only happens when you first start a movie, but it will happen when Netflix dynamically downgrades or upgrades the quality during a showing. That is when it gets annoying. Doesn't happen often and it may not happen to you if you have a better Internet connection.

There is also a 1-2 second delay for the sound to return after pausing a movie. The video continues, but the sound has that short delay.

Other Thoughts: I only broke one egg for the cons I stated since all other aspects of the receiver are awesome. Perhaps Onkyo can fix it with a firmware update, dunno. I would buy this receiver again.

1 out of 5 eggsZone 2/3 are analog only

Pros: All the HDMI inputs, there is no drop of video quality from source device through the receiver

Cons: I bought this unit specifically for the Powered Zones 2/3 I read many write ups but Onkyo fails (purposely) to mention that Zone 2/3 will not work on Digital which means all the HDMI inputs I have will not play Zone 2/3. Having multi zones is why I bought this unit as we do entertaining and I want to isolate the party music in the game room, deck and pool side. If having multi zones is important I would pass on this one...too late for me to return.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful receiver

Pros: 1. Price - unbelievable value for the money.
2. Powerful, clear sound through my KEF speakers.
3. Nice looking menus (compared to my 2008 Denon).
4. DLNA! Love Play To option from my notebook.
5. A bunch of internet radio stations if you need them.
6. 2 year warranty.
7. WiFi ready.
8. Does not support AirPlay so no Apple tax.

Cons: 1. Network navigation on the device is cumbersome if toy have hundreds of CDs.
2. Takes quite a bit to initialize the network.
3. Gets a bit warm. Don't keep it enclosed.

Other Thoughts: I updated the firmware from the usb right away and I had 0 problems with the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Tons of HDMI inputs. Like the other reviewer stated $429 on sale. Plays all audio flawless and video is great passing through. On screen display is a big help with adjustments on the fly. This is a upgrade from my 608 model and boy is there is a difference! Took 25mins to hook up my Quintets, to Klipsh C20's and Klipsh 8" down firing sub while talking to a friend. Thanks "Scott". It's Apple TV ready.

Cons: No cons just awesome.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade a lower model receiver Ordered on a Saturday and got it delivered on a Wednesday. Newegg is and will be the best online store for me.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice!

Pros: This is a VERY NICE upgrade from my 11 year old Sony STR- DE985.

- Setup was a breeze with Audyssey.
- Was on sale for $429 this passed weekend ;)
- Definitely notice a significant and overall sound improvement compared to my old receiver.

Cons: None, however I do want to mention that the box it shipped in was beat up and had a couple of tears in it. Even so the unit is in pristine condition.

Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this receiver. I'm using this as my surround sound system for my PC games, and for music listening -- it's easily worth the purchase price.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Reciever, Mediocre Network Playback

Pros: Sound quality is good compared to other recent Onkyos and anything else in the price range.

Easy setup.

Lots of codecs. Lots of HDMI.

The app is an acceptable around the house remote, while your listening in a second room without an ir repeater.

Modern look, nice large vol knob. Backlight

Cons: DOES NOT SUPPORT my high resolution FLAC files. Network playback, and other apps on the device are not finished quality. Poor network playback (on gigabit wired/AC wireless, large file playback like lossless is very jittery, have tried from MANY different sources all the way up to my main workstation) Lack of connectors other than HDMI. Advertising of hd photo playback would make you think there is some way to achieve this without expensive separate dlna software (But you can use the ones that come on certain phones like Samsung Galaxies, doesn't help from your pc / laptop / hard disk / whatever else though).

The onkyo android app only works with certain local audio files on the phone, no streaming (google play would be a nice start), and no photos or video, lossless audio doesn't work in most cases, or chokes (5Ghz 1.3Gb/s AC wireless).

Front audio in is digital only (usb and coaxial), and miniplug setup mic. They could have at least let the setup mic port work also for line in or something. Digital would be great if it would read my FLAC files, but it doesn't.

Doesn't read from any cloud sources.

Other Thoughts: Hoping Firmware updates make the unit much more solid, as most of the problems are with the execution/implementation of the software. This unit should solve problems for me and allow me NOT to have 5 different playback devices decoding everything for it, instead in is a half finished ideal.

This is my second unit. First one the network was DOA, second one its obvious the network is SLOW (poor quality nic) which is not good for high quality audio streaming. Works ok for compressed audio, but still stops to buffer every 2 songs (even on pandora sometimes) (get some memory buffer in there guys) I have 36Mb/s download for internet and an asus rt-ac66u router with all CAT 6 through the house, this shouldn't be happening.

Backlight on vol knob doesn't seem to come on.

Really, theres not a lot else in this price range that has all this. But will you get much more for spending twice as much?

I bought this to use for its network features. That is where I am most dissapointed. If you don't care about that, its great other than the lack of certain connections.

5 out of 5 eggsONKYO TX-NR 71

Pros: Every time I use the receiver I learn something new. I know I still haven't learned everything about this unit but I'm so glad I picked this one. There are so many features on this unit and for the price no one comes close.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I've looked and researched the other receivers out there and I still kept coming back to the Onkyo. I got it and I'm not
looking back!!

Thank you Newegg and Thank you Onkyo!

Pros: Great sound. This replaces my old TX-SR876 receiver.I noticed a change in the sound quality after using the audessey setup.Intial setup was painless and everything working in about 20 min.

Cons: I wish i could by-amp my front speakers and still use zones 2 and 3. For some reason I could not get my ps3 video to output to my tv.It did work with the old receiver but not this one.I get a resolution error.

Other Thoughts: Great price from Newegg.Could not beat the $549 price tag. Thanks Newegg

5 out of 5 eggsVery good receiver

Pros: The receiver was easy to hook-up. It already had the latest firmware update on it when I checked that. I really enjoy all the Internet radio features.

Cons: I really think Onkyo should build in the wireless feature. Instead you are stuck having to spend an additional $25-$30 for the wireless dongle. Just more of a hassle than anything.

Other Thoughts: The receiver itself was easy to hookup. The wireless dongle was easy to add once received and it only took 5 minutes to get it connected to my network
