THX: Hear Precisely What The Director Intended
THX ensures what you hear through this Onkyo is precisely what was recorded. Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is ten to twelve feet, and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX certification, the TX-NR818 had to meet the most demanding standards for home cinema audio quality and performance.

4 out of 5 eggsalmost perfect

Pros: Upconvert, power, clarity, input sectability, etc

Cons: Main issue I have come across has to do with down conversion and outsourcing to tertiary receivers. No optical out, and zones 2 and 3 only output line OR powered if there is an analog audio connection on that input. You can sort of trick it by jumpering the front pre-outs into another source, but phono would put a WAY too high of an output, and a regular line is too low. This would be fine if the intellivision +/-12db compensation worked on external zones, but apparently that only works on the main outputs.

Other Thoughts: Still an exceptional product.... just wish that it could have internal circuitry to convert digital signals down to analog as well considering it is necessary for some external functions.

4 out of 5 eggsSo FAR Thumbs up

Pros: Nice for an update from my old separate 5.1
The receiver is DNLA and HDMI friendly. Sound is good if not great (depends on complete system and what you like.) The up-scaling and other features I am still learning that this thing carries is amazing.

Cons: 280 plus page instructions.. heck I am old school engineer and at the point I want to just press one button. But once you get this thing set up it is great.

Other Thoughts: Make it a one chip solution next time

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Features, Dual HDMI Outs, endless amounts of inputs/outputs. 9.2 audio support with external amp. Network ready, online radio, Remote.

PRICE $639.99 ON SALE!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased the Onkyo TX NR818 due to its mass amounts of features it has at this sale price. I dare you to find another receiver at this price with something even close to these specs.

Setting and configuring up is a breeze using the onscreen guide. I love the dual HDMI output, one goes out to my projector while the other output is to a monitor. The Audyssey 32XT is great for self-calibration (i then fine tune with SPL meter). Although the receiver has Dual Subwoofer outputs, the version of Audyssey on this receiver does not have multi subwoofer calibration.

My setup consists of a 7 channel external amp powering my Klipsch Reference speakers and dual PSA subwoofers. This Onkyo receiver is capable of outputting 9.2 surround sound (Either Wide OR Heights but not both) with an external amplifier. I had an old pair of Polk tower speakers so that I can test out 9.2 (Front Wide mode). The Onkyo is powering my front main speakers. If your room is wide enough having front wide speakers really opens the front sound stage!

The remote buttons are laid out nicely. I love the onscreen volume and audio information since my receiver is in a closet. The remote app on my Android phone, is a neat option. I have my Onkyo hardwired to my network so everything is instant. When connecting an iPod via USB, I am able to use my phone like an iPod to view and play songs (same for online radio).

Overall I am one happy camper and do not see myself upgrading in the future.

1 out of 5 eggsOnkyo is having problems

Pros: Nice sound easy to setup

Cons: The TX-NR818 as to replace a TXNR-809 that the HDMI board went south. Of course finding a replacement HDMI board is akin to finding chicken teeth. Second receiver that the HDMI board has had problems. This receiver came to me with a non working network card. My guess is that Onkyo has little to none quality control of their products.

Other Thoughts: Sending this back and going to buy a Denon.

5 out of 5 eggsA New CHAMP!

Pros: We had a couple of hiccoughs with a dead on arrival AV receiver, and then an error in its' replacement. However, due to the most EXCELLENT customer service we have EVER experienced in MANY years of consumer electronics shopping, both online and in "regular" stores, we received our Onkyo TX-NR818 VERY quickly and in pristine condition. It handles all of my numerous components with plenty of inputs to spare. The set-up and controls are both clear and logical. The 7.2 sound is AMAZING. And the POWER...! With plenty of unused speaker binding posts, we am considering adding 4 more speakers to go to 9.2. This is our 7th Onkyo AVR. ( All are still working just like the day I received them. )
We have several homes ( lake, ranch, etc. ), each with their own system(s). Onkyo's 24hr. telephone technical support is also a definite plus for getting even the most minute details of your system answered. Overall, we can most heartily recommend both OneCall and Onkyo. You just can't go wrong with either one.

Cons: This is a big, heavy unit. ( 40+ lbs. ) 135W has to come from somewhere, so be prepared for an intricate, adaptable AVR. ( The CD-ROM manual is clear and precise. 24hr. Onkyo tech support is also available...and they REALLY know what they are talking about! ) Thanks to Gabe, Manny and Sal at Onkyo for your help in the past with all my questions over these last few years..

Other Thoughts: This will prolly be the highest level of Onkyo AVRs I will ever buy. It has everything and more for my needs.

1 out of 5 eggsDead On arrival

Pros: Mine was dead right out of the box. The replacement sent me was the wrong ( lesser ) model.

Cons: Would like to hear one that actually works before rendering an opinion.

5 out of 5 eggs24fps bug is fixed, no more stuttering. Excellent receiver.

Pros: In previous review, this is a follow up.

Cons: In previous review, this is a follow up.

Other Thoughts: Just an upddate to the review I made before where I complained about image picture stuttering - Onkyo finally released a firmware update and fixed it. Apparently receiver was switching to a strange 24 fps mode instead of 23.976 (anytime you reffer to 24fps, it really is 23.976) which of course caused it to run out of frames in the buffer, which was perceived as skipping frames.
Onkyo said on forums that they could not reproduce it, but after so many people complained, they investigated more, found the issue and released a firmware update that fixed the issue for good. The thing is, at the time I write this review, the update is only available as a manual USB update and your receiver is not gonna update to it over the network. Check out Onkyo website for details, but I assure you the issue is gone and the update is there.
To the people that did not see it - good for you, but all the 818 as well as few other models had this issue. Some people just ignore details that drive others crazy.

Pros: Sounds good when working

Cons: Complete power Failure 30 days after I received this item. Gone for 6 weeks for repair. Came back and worked fine. Now 5 months later same thing, will not power up.

4 out of 5 eggsOnkyo TX-NR818

Pros: Great Sounding, quality built, feature galore, Value for the money. Fantastic deal from Newegg for $560 brand new! 30% off $799 (they sold in one day)

Cons: GUI with too small a writing, not enough info stream music, "stripped down" version of Audyssey Multeq XT32. Denon has full version with more options

Other Thoughts: Receiver arrived with 8 inch hole in side of box plus other damage to the box. The side of the receiver was completely visible. My luck was holding...no damage and the receiver seems fine to boot.

5 out of 5 eggsPlenty of everything and then some!

Pros: Sound stage is accurate.
Highly adjustable.
Pandora.
Plenty of connections.
Networking.
Quiet operation.
Cooler (temperature) than my Denon.
Well thought out functionality.
Clean high power output.

Cons: (Minor) No on board switchable outlet for another component.

Other Thoughts: Be prepared to learn the unit to get the most out of your system and trump sound quality of less adjustable plug and play receivers. There is a learning cure but at this price you must be serious about quality anyways. My system is rich, full, clean, and easy to navigate.( once set to my taste)

I will say if you do not want to put the time into learning and adjusting your system, find a different unit because there is a bell for every whistle and one could give up and become disgruntled. Definitely worth the effort. New sounds coming from old familiar Music.
