4 out of 5 eggsVery nice unit

Pros: While I was hesitant when I purchased this last time this sub $200 deal was around due to some of the negative reviews I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. It was the right choice.

I've had this over a year, followed all the firmware upgrade directions to the T and have had nothing but a stellar experience with this unit. Yes it is 5.2, but that's all I wanted in the room I had.

Love this unit and recommend it highly.

Cons: None. Use a tablet to read the manual on-line. Go Green people!

Other Thoughts: If it is under $200 and 5.2 is what you want go for it!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit for lots of HDMI devices

Pros: Six HDMI inputs, which is the best way to hook up a HTPC and other devices. Plenty enough power. Output for a powered subwoofer. Ethernet input. Lots more.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Have a HTPC (including Blueray) with HDMI, plus PC and DVD inputs, all output to a 1080P projector and 84" screen, Polk speakers and sub, all on Black Friday a year ago. Awesome value for the price, way better than a huge flat panel at 5X the price IMHO. Have not tried all the features yet. Watched the winter Olympics on this system and it blew everyone away. HDMI is the way to go for painless and flexible multi-AV device wiring and this receiver can handle anything you want to throw at it in that regard.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy

Pros: Loaded with options, 3D 4K passthru. Easy setup with onkyo Auto tune. Network side DLNA works great.

Cons: Is not 7.1 just 5.2 But the my room size it would be point less. Also one big problem I had, There was no user guide. Only a cd with pdf file. There for I had to print off 100 page manual to be able to set it up. and play with all the options.

Other Thoughts: Put a printed guide in the box

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth it

Pros: Very good receiver. Great sound and picture with the HDMI pass-through feature. And the device is "feature-rich", combining the ability to handle all video and audio connections with web and blu-tooth streaming.
The screen on my television initially would flicker periodically when connected to the receiver using the HDMI pass-through feature, but only when the cable-box was the source. I found a quick fix for that, just in case anyone else runs into the same problem: Set the 'Sharpness' level on the cable-box (Verizon FIOS) to 'Default'. The settings were set to 'Sharp' - by me, I'm sure - which appears to have caused the cable-box to flood the input port on the receiver, causing it to reset periodically. The setting on the cable box is found under:
Menu/Settings/Audio & Video/Video Settings/Video Sharpness

Cons: The Onkyo receiver has not caused the screen to flicker or reset a single time once the setting was changed to 'Default' on the cable-box. Again, the picture appears to be clearer when passing the HDMI signal through the receiver; background images in particular are sharper and clearer. And even if my judgment on that is an optimistic one, the ability to connect all audio and video connections to the receiver is much easier and convenient to manage when switching between peripherals. I would still recommend using 'like' HDMI cables to connect peripherals as the connection to the television; no need to risk a loss in signal strength using a lesser cable.

Other Thoughts: As stated before, the sound is fantastic. It is connected to a Polk Audio 5.1 surround system and it gives a great home-theater experience. Massive bass during action scenes gives you the film immersion that some (like myself) just can't do without. Yet it's versatile enough to enhance dialogue clearly so that you don't have to trade voice clarity for big bang. Of course, music sounds great. Very satisfied with the receiver... now that I've figured out how to use it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat receiver

Pros: There are multiple HDMI inputs that are labeled for pretty much input need you might have. There is CBL/SAT, BR/DVD, Game, PC, etc. Each of these are essentially plug and play - very impressive.
The MultiEQ is awesome and sounds fantastic. When you are setting this up, you should make sure all children and pets leave the room as it will pick up even the most minor of irregularities. However, it is fast so they don't have to be exiled for long.
The Lip Synching option is great, no more trying to get the delay just right.
The Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume features are really nice. With the Dynamic Volume, you don't have to worry about those commercials that are mixed at ten times the volume of whatever you're currently watching and waking up everyone in the neighborhood with the instant volume spike.

Cons: Hooking up the component equipment (in our case, the Xbox 360) is not very elegant. You need to switch the television input to component when you want to use the component device and then it will work. Setting it up to run through the Game Input didn't seem to work. However it is possible that with an HDMI X360 cable, that this would not be an issue.
The remote that comes with the receiver looks like it could be an awesome universal remote but it only functions in a total Onkyo environment.
There is only one optical audio input.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I love this receiver. The negatives are very minor and the positives highly outweigh them. This receiver sounds wonderful and I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new A/V receiver.

1 out of 5 eggsVERY BAD!

Pros: Large number of HDMI inputs. Free and very functional Android/iOS remote application available.

Cons: VERY POOR QUALITY. Unit was degraded from day one - long time to startup and sync (display an image) on the Sony Television. from power on. Thought it might be the TV or the specific combo but confirmed it was attributable solely to the receiver. Tried multiple firmware updates. This progressively got worse over 11 months until complete failure 2 weeks before warranty expired. Shipped to authorized repair center (decent process except for $25 shipping I had to pay) and they replaced a few of the boards.

It worked fine for first week and is now showing signs of previous problems. long startup and sync issues.

The network connectivity - via the Onkyo wifi adapter - is poor - hard time getting and keeping wifi signal. The network apps themselves are pretty basic and a pain to navigate,

Other Thoughts: I realize that perhaps it is my specific unit but A LOT of folks on the Onkyo boards post similar issues. I would look elsewhere. I myself will not buy Onkyo again.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent... So far

Pros: Video and sound quality.

Cons: None so far... We'll see what happens after 1 year.

Other Thoughts: My last Onkyo receiver died (the HDMI ports stopped passing video, no internet connectivity and not starting correctly) after 1 year... Exactly 1 week after warranty expiration. Luckily, I had bought extended warranty so I got my money back and, given I really liked the old receiver, decided to give it another try with a newer version (and extended warranty again, of course!)
