As the perfect A/V receiver for budget-conscious film lovers and audiophiles, the Harman Kardon AVR 1650 has an impressive list of features designed to take your home entertainment to the next level. Thanks to HDMI with 3-D, Deep Color and Audio Return Channel, this versatile receiver brings a multidimensional TV viewing experience to your living room, offering all the latest Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding technology and Harman Kardon Logic 7 processing, while creating an exhilarating 5.1-channel, 360-degree soundscape for your movies, TV shows and games. And with four HDMI inputs, extensive video and audio connectivity, and the ability to connect with a Harman Kardon The Bridge IIIP (available separately) for iPod/iPhone playback, the AVR 1650 gives you all the flexibility you need to configure a dream home theater system that truly blows people away.

  • newegg Welcome to the next dimension in home theater Bring the latest cutting-edge thrills to your living room with HDMI with 3-D, Deep Color and Audio Return Channel – as you experience the latest in 3-D home entertainment when combining the AVR 1650 with a 3-D TV and Blu-ray Disc recordings or cable or satellite sources. See your favorite films, TV shows and sporting events – broadcast in 3-D – with a depth never before experienced and be blown away by this spectacular new dimension in home theater viewing. One of the most respected Harman Kardon features has always been foresight – and by integrating HDMI with 3-D into its latest line of receivers, Harman Kardon engineering continues to be a leader in this area.
  • newegg Power yourself to 5-channel surround sound If you’re going to kick-start the home theater of your dreams, a high-performance receiver – with at least five channels of surround-sound potential – is probably high on your wish list. That’s what the AVR 1650 delivers, offering 95 watts per channel and the ability to power a full 5-channel surround-sound system. It also features high-current capability (HCC) and an ultrawide-bandwidth amplifier design for accurate, dynamic sound – so you can experience virtually the same spectacular sound effects at home as you do in your local cineplex.
  • newegg Top-of-the-line audio technologies Unlock the full potential of your Blu-ray Disc recordings with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. No matter what mode or mood you’re in, you’ll hear audio the way its creators intended – as you immerse yourself in a 360-degree surround soundscape. In addition, the AVR 1650 also benefits from having an HDMI Audio Return Channel, which lets you listen to your TV’s audio through your home theater system instead of through the TV speakers. This feature affects greater sound quality and ease of use – a benefit you’re likely to appreciate along with the 30 FM/AM station presets, which let you enjoy all your favorite radio stations, without having to program them by yourself.
  • newegg Surround yourself with superior Logic 7 processing Offering multichannel sound for your movies, music and games, the AVR 1650 employs Harman Kardon Logic 7 processing, which transforms conventional stereo sources (such as CDs or iPod devices) into 5.1-channel surround sound using algorithms. The result? Optimal audio quality that makes something good into something spectacular – while engulfing you in a 360-degree soundscape. Whether you’re listening to HDMI, analog or component sources, Logic 7 technology allows you to experience the surrounding ambient sounds that are already in the stereo mixes by converting, or upmixing, two-channel stereo signals into five- or seven-channel signals. This ensures you’ll get a superior entertainment experience.
  • newegg Play your iPod and/or iPhone device through your home theater system Over the years, iPod and iPhone devices have redefined how you consume music, allowing you to take your favorite songs with you – wherever you go. And now, thanks to the AVR 1650 and The Bridge IIIP docking station (available separately), you can experience these same digital tracks with better quality than ever – right at home. To do it, simply connect The Bridge IIIP to your iPod or iPhone device and AVR 1650 with a single cable – and, using the provided remote control, navigate your music and video libraries using the receiver’s on-screen display (OSD). Your musical options will increase immediately – and instantly sound like never before. The Bridge IIIP can even play back video from your iPod or iPhone device.
  • newegg Achieve the best possible audio performance Improve your home theater system’s performance with the touch of a button by setting speaker volume, proper speaker balance and timing for 5.1-channel surround-sound speakers. By automatically measuring the frequency-response peaks and valleys in the listening room using the microphone (included), EzSet/EQ processing allows for a precise, compensating equalization curve to help your system gain extraordinary sonic accuracy. And even though the EzSet/EQ system may sound complicated to set up, it’s not. Just connect the microphone to your AVR 1650 receiver and follow the on-screen instructions. In a few simple steps, EzSet/EQ equalization will automatically tailor sound to your speakers and specific room conditions, sending it directly toward listeners in the most ideal position – ear level for a seated listener.

1 out of 5 eggs8 months later...

Pros: Seemed OK while it lasted...

Cons: Generated a lot of heat from day 1. Here I am, 8 months after purchasing, and I am going to have to send it in for warranty work. The display stopped working completely, just black panel. The amplification and source switching still works, but hard for all but the very familiar to figure out what to set the receiver to without the info from the front panel.

Other Thoughts: Nice looking, but seems very light weight and that seems reflected in the seeming issues with heat dissipation. Feels a bit flimsy and the volume knob seems fragile.

2 out of 5 eggsNot old school sound control

Pros: If you need AV inputs this is your amp

Cons: If you need to tweak sound, this is not your amp.

Other Thoughts: I have a Kyocera amp from the 70's and it has 3db headroom with mosfet outputs and an eq system that cannot be beat. If you know what a parametric equalizer is then you know I can narrow my sound choices precisely with the Kyocera. The HK is very elementary and ineffective.

5 out of 5 eggsAn HK 5.1 for 200 bucks!

Pros: Sound quality awesome and set up a breeze! Calibration feature works really well. Only minor adjustments required to add your personal sound preference. Can't go wrong even at 300 bucks.

Cons: Wish manual sound adjustments could be made while listening. The OSD takes you to a mute mode while making adjustments. I agree with a previous review that the display looks 80-ish.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter Than Sony

Pros: Great sound quality when using 5.1, subwoofer output cranks, easy setup, HDMI works perfectly, lots of clean power, nice looking.

Cons: The logic 7 sound mode and virtual surround for 2 speakers sounds flat. On screen display looks ancient. The remote control is the worst on any product I've ever used.

Other Thoughts: This receiver sounds much better than my Sony HTR 1010 that it replaced. The Sony had many more options but the sound quality was horrible. The HK has a very good power supply that provides 25 amps of constant power so no matter what type of speaker you're using this will power it with no problems. I have an Energy micro 5.1 setup(very good speakers) and this receiver makes them come alive. When I have it at 50% volume the walls shake and there is no distortion. These particular speakers would not handle this receiver's power at 70%+. The warranty through HK is 2 years which is very good. Sony, for example, gave a one year warranty and that receiver was twice the price. Overall I'm happy with this purchase and the price was right.

4 out of 5 eggsnot bad, but...

Pros: nice sound, easy to setup, looks good, good frequency range. Better than my 15 year old Yamaha amp that was very good, very good indeed.

Cons: supplied manual very lacking, no switched outlets on the back for peripherals. When using the On Screen Display, the tv picture and sound disappear to display OSD instructions, so you can't see or hear how your selections changed. Must get totally out of OSD.

Other Thoughts: No input for a turntable. My old Yamaha home theater amp had one. Nowadays, that's not a big deal. But for those with a turntable, that would have been nice. Same thing with the lack of switched outlets on the back of the unit. Switched outlets on the back are electrical outlets for tape decks, CD's, DVD's, etc. They turn on the device when amp is turned on.

2 out of 5 eggsEntry-level, budget receiver

Pros: Great brand name
Good looking
Price

Cons: Flat sound quality
VCR-like OSD

Other Thoughts: I'd been keeping my eye on the AVR 1650 (and it's lower wattage brother) for a couple of months to replace a late 90's TEAC AV receiver that I have connected to two Optimus speakers and a Mirage powered-subwoofer. The receiver is having power issues and I was looking to replace it. When Newegg had the AVR 1650 on sale with free shipping, I went for it.

Opened it up and connected it to my Samsung TV and WDTV Live via HDMI cables (I only have HDMI 1.3 cables which is fine since I wasn't attempting ARC). The OSD that appeared was primitive to say the least. Even VCR menus from the earlier 90's were better than this. But this receiver is for listening to and not for watching so I moved on.

Now my setup is only 2.1 not 5.1. I was planning on moving to 5.1 at some point but not right now. No problem, the AVR 1650 can be set anywhere between 2.0 to 5.1. Great. However, with 2.0 or 2.1 you get only “2 CH STEREO” or “VITRUAL” audio modes, with no chance of selecting any other Dolby option. Dolby Pro Logic, DTS, True and the like are surround modes and I don't have center or rear speakers so I understand.

But here's the reason I sent the unit back. The sound quality. Now I'm no audiophile, I bought my components second-hand and they sound great. On the AVR 1650, I changed every setting I could to improve the sound quality, to no avail. It sounded “flat”. I don't mean equalizer-like flat, but flat in that it lacked depth. Or presence. Does that make any sense? I always thought that amplifiers or receivers were all the same until now. Hooked up the old receiver and the enjoyment returned.

Like other reviewers have said, the AVR 1650 is a budget, entry-level receiver that can play loud and I'm sure its a step up for half the people that buy it, and that's ok. But if you like to listen to music, I'd recommend you take a pass on this.

1 out of 5 eggsOut of box failure

Pros: None, the receiver doesn't output on its HDMI jack

Cons: No audio, video, or menu content comes out of the HDMI jack. I am a A/V professional installer and I bought this unit for my own home.

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd it through Newegg

5 out of 5 eggsHonestly, this is the best receiver under $300 by far

Pros: Great, great sound. Harmon Kardon's are some of the best sounding receivers out there. When it comes to budget receivers, HK's are really the best receiver you can buy. Honorable mentions include Yamaha or Onkyo, which are also pretty good. But below $500, IMHO, HK's are king. They are extremely clear and remarkably accurate for the price. Now as for this receiver, its no exception. I would say this is a worthy replacement for the AVR 1600. The 95 watt rating isn't the old "underrated" rating HK's used to use, its more like the rating denon or Yamaha uses.

Now about the receiver itself - nothing less than fantastic. I have my AVR 1650 hooked up to 5 Dayton Audio B652. I haven't had a chance to tune it yet, but out of the box it is incredible. The B652's pull 6-ohm, yet not a complaint out of the AVR 1650. It handles the speakers well. The sound is clear all the way up to 0db, and I have pushed them to 3db just for fun without any noticeable distortion, although I don't run my receiver over -20db or -15db for normal use. The receiver looks good and is set up well for the audiofile of a budget

Cons: Really, none.

Other Thoughts: Just buy it. This receiver sounds almost as good as the $550 Yamaha Aventage 700 series. It is ridiculously good value. You will not regret purchasing this receiver.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver

Pros: Ease of operation if manual downloaded, display, sound, set-up, separation of channels, enough HDMI inputs(4), over all design. 3 yr warranty

Cons: Not complete list of remote codes, tried to download manual and kept getting a German version, had to get tech support to send in e-mail. Which they did promptly. Still trying to get codes for Hisense TV's.

Other Thoughts: This was a great buy for the price. Was set up in no time for quick viewing, but you really need to download complete manual for proper useof input components( blue ray, dvr, computer, etc,...). I was using an out dated Kenwood and didn't realize just how much I was missing until I installed Harmon Kardon into my home entertainment system. Running it with Bose Acoustimas 10 system and sounds great! Thanks NEWEGG for the e-mail on 24 hr sale. BAMM!
