KEF MODEL3 Home Audio Speakers combine KEF’s proven Uni-Q ‘point source’ driver array from the award-winning KHT separates system with a unique new application of NXT flat panel technology, delivering detailed 3D surround effect from just two speakers positioned at the front of the room, with no need for speakers and cables behind the listener.

Like all great ideas, the concept is simple. The vertical NXT flat panels behind the main arrays create virtual rear effects speakers, while the Uni-Q drivers create a perfect‘phantom’ centre speaker right in the middle of the screen – just like the movies. The effect is certainly impressive, with pin-sharp dialogue and vocals appearing to come from the performers’ mouths as if they were physically there. The same is true for rear effects – with your eyes closed, you’d swear the sound was coming from behind you. The acoustic illusion of all three virtual speakers is accentuated by the Uni-Q driver configuration, which spreads the sound image over a much larger area than a conventional speaker.

  • newegg KEF Uni-Q Originally developed for KEF’s legendary audiophile loudspeakers, the Uni-Q driver uses aerospace materials to engineer a high performance tweeter that’s small enough to mount in the centre of the bass/midrange cone so that both act as a single point source. As this configuration disperses the sound over a much wider area, it has huge benefits for home theatre: speaker positioning is far more flexible, and everyone in the room enjoys the same clear, realistic 3D soundscape. It also creates a perfect ‘centre speaker’ image from the left and right channels in a way that conventional speakers simply can’t.
  • newegg NXT flat panel technology The rear effects signal is directed to NXT panels mounted vertically behind the main drivers. KEF’s innovation is to use freestanding (rather than wall-mounted) NXT panels, allowing the sound to reflect off the side walls to the back of the room. Like the dipole rear speakers of high-end home theatre systems, this generates the wide, diffuse sound-field you need for convincing ambient effects.
  • newegg Cast aluminum enclosures The beauty of die cast aluminum as a speaker enclosure is that it’s acoustically inert. So you don’t get cabinet vibrations interfering with the purity of the sound; and because there’s no conventional box behind the drive units, there are no distorting internal resonances either.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Clear, detailed, somewhat accurate according to the price. The size fits my space perfectly but the center sound is kind of blocked by the shelf and I have no intention to correct it due to the limited space. Love them.

Cons: Too modern look for the Brand Name.

5 out of 5 eggsKEF what an awesome company

Pros: I researched and discovered some of the finest speakers in the world use "KEF" drivers. "KEF" has been making speakers since 1961 with many innovations. The top of the "KEF" line is the "Muon" @198k while the "Blade" is $29k. This "KEF" technology is evident in all their line. Modern Audophonics at it's finest. These Model 3 speakers are quite amazing for their size with KEF's Uni-Q .

Cons: So why the difference in price and size? For the difference in room size. The Model 3 are designed to use for front and surround with 4 inputs (2 channels each 8 wires total) Their small size has "Audiophile" quality. Placed at around 6 feet from listener the clarity is astounding. Any speaker if driven beyond 50% will distort. A Sub Woofer is a must.

Other Thoughts: I am driveing these Model 3's with an ONKYO TX NR809 fed by SP/DIF from my computer and they are on the back two channels while a set of KEF iQ10's are up front. The sound either in stereo or 5.1 surround is very warm and clear comming from these. DTS sounds great with these. I am very happy I discovered "KEF" it is a brand I will stick with. The technology from the "Blade" and the "Muon" are very obvious with these Model 3's. The KEF team are artists. I hear many many things crystal clear with these on my back surround channels and they are amazing set to stereo. Great stop gap speaker untill you can afford something higher end.

4 out of 5 eggsKEF Model 3BL

Pros: The KEF Model 3's are built very well and they sound terrific in my medium size room.

Cons: The manual that comes with the speakers is useless.
Make sure you change the Dolby Pro Logic mode on your receiver to "Phantom" mode since there is no center channel and the signals have to be output through the front speakers. The output is not "true" surround, but, they are more than adequate for any listening needs.

Other Thoughts: I decided to go with these KEF(S) for my home theater because I didn't want to run wires to a pair of rear speakers, but, wanted a surround set-up. When I saw them for $109.99 with free shipping, my eyes lit up.
They are an excellent bang for the buck!

As always, the shipping was fast and the speakers were well packaged. Great job Newegg!!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Compact Speaker by KEF

Pros: Every once and a while you pull a diamond out of the rough and that is exactly what these speakers are. These KEF's image like no other speaker I have heard on the market.I am using them in my bedroom and no matter where I stand, sit,or lay down in the room do these speakers seem to lose the clarity, tonal quality, accuracy,or imagining.Absolutely amazed by their presence, attention to detail, and room filling dispersion. Also I am running these off a 80 WPC Pioneer receiver and they get very loud without any noticable distortion. At $119.00 shipped these KEF speakers are the best compact speaker I have ever heard.Another awesome feature is that they sound just as good in a short listening field up close as they do several feet away from them.Used in stereo mode on my receiver you would swear that you had a center channel and rear surround speakers they image so well.I am totally impressed with the build quality, design, and engineering that were put into these KEF Model 3's.

Cons: Not really a Con but wish the main driver was a 6.5 inch speaker so they would get lower bass frequencies as I then wouldn't need to run a seperate subwoofer.

Other Thoughts: I can't stress enough as to how well these KEF Model 3's image and disperse amazing sound throughout an entire room as well as sound excellent in a small sound field. These would make a excellent speaker pair for any computer gamer's desktop or for a small, medium,or large theater room.Glad New Egg put these KEF's in a price range that I could afford because I am ecstatic that I own such an excellent product from KEF.Thank you again New Egg for your excellent customer service, prompt shipping, and awesome sales prices to help us budget minded customers get excellent products!!!

4 out of 5 eggs4channel near-field ambient speakers

Pros: I found the KEF Model 3 (4 channel) speaker pair an interesting and largely successful effort to address a longstanding audiophile need faced by many PC users: namely, desire for a truly satisfactory desktop near-field listening experience-- i.e., a means to achieve HiFi at listening distances of two to five or six feet. The challenges to be overcome derive primarily from laws of physical acoustics, but also practical needs/issues such as limited desktop space. KEF has mounted an electrically isolated/independent small flat-panel ambient sound (surround/rear-channel) driver behind and radiating perpendicularly to each front channel speaker (see NewEgg/KEF photos & specs to better understand this unusual design and construction.) KEF's idea/claim is to avoid a need to position rear-channel speakers physically behind or to the side of the listener, often undesired/impractical.

Cons: KEF also claims that the Model 3 eliminates need for a center channel speaker-- implying that center channel acoustic fill is provided by their NXT side-firing/bipolar ambient panels. However, the surround/spatialized signal that drives those panels, not to mention the panels themselves, lack properties important for high definition front-center channel acoustic performance. KEF uses a proprietary 15' long 4-channel connecting cable that minimizes desktop clutter; HOWEVER, with 22ga conductors and a custom, molex-4-pin resembling (but not compatible) speaker plug, net wire resistance per channel runs to approximately half an ohm (with one channel on my sample measuring worse than that, possibly a connector fabrication defect ) Clearly, those who believe amp/speaker damping and Monster cable are important will be disappointed; and yet the scheme appears to work OK, I guess because bass rolls off below 200Hz with the main drivers and at 300Hz on the side-firing panels; so less xmod.

Other Thoughts: Relatively close coupling of speaker and ear does trim power-handling requirements, but it exacerbates the acoustic wave phase interference effects associated with large radiating surfaces or designs employing multiple drivers for each audio channel. In their "Model 3", KEF addresses the issues by use of a 4" mid&bass speaker in a compact, cone-shaped basket, with a coaxial tweeter-- so as to achieve well controlled, crisp left and right forward-firing/directional front-channel quasi-pointsources. Although in comparison to "normal" PC units, the speakers sound fine to me by themselves (driven by a decent audiophile amp) and possess subjectively adequate bass WHEN LISTENING IN THE CLOSE-COUPLED NEAR-FIELD, some will find a subwoofer "necessary." NewEgg's most suitable, physically small sub is the Energy ESW-M8.

Assuming one has a suitable audiophile amp-- among comparable NewEgg near-field desktop speaker system alternatives: consider the very small Energy RC Micro with Mirage

5 out of 5 eggsawesome for the price

Pros: Great sounding. I had Polk M10 before for the surround. These KEF have an integrated main driver and planar array for the rear surround. Crisp clear sound. Noticed the difference right away (Had a pair of Polk M10 as the surround before.)

Cons: The one con was one driver wire polarity was incorrectly marked (according to the Denon receiver test). These speakers are designed to be paired with a subwoofer.

Other Thoughts: Saw these at a great price ($149.) Could not find much info on them, but figured I could return them if they didn't work out. What did arrive was two speaker units as per the description. But each contains a direct radiator and a planar radiator with separate terminals. So I used the direct connection as a surround connection and the planar connection as the back/rear surround. My main speakers are Vienna Acoustics Maestro center and Mozart main. I have a 12" powered (Radio Shack) sub-woofer and a high-end Denon receiver that automatically did speaker configuration. These speakers appear to be the same/similar same as the satellite speakers in the KT100 package (the KT100 says they used 14 mm tweeter driver vice a 13 mm tweeter). The package came with speaker wire molded to special molded plug to connect the 4 wires to each of the speakers. You just hookup the tinned ends to the amp.

The sound awesome. Crisp clear sound. An thinking of buying another pair for the bedroom
