Sherwood says “digital receiver”, I say “home theater component”. It handles 5.1 channels of sound at 100W per channel, and it has an AM/FM receiver with 30 station presets. But it also has 3 audio/video inputs, so obviously it switches video sources as well. And the price is one of the lowest I've seen for a unit with these capabilities: there are portable “boom boxes” that cost more.

In times not long gone, to get a home theater, you had to buy an entire system, and if you didn't have a lot of money, you didn't get a home theater. Well, now you can get components as well as systems, and they're all coming down in price. So if you want to build a system one part at a time and not have to hock one of the kids to do it, this unit deserves your attention.

Go on, check it out for yourself. I can afford to be patient: I'm not on a commission.

5 out of 5 eggsLong Term Review

Pros: Crazy to think i wrote the review: Anonymous 10/1/2007 10:57:14 AM

It's 2014 now and I still haven't had a single problem. Very reliable

Unfortunately my dog ate the remote back in 2008 or so. Still haven't replaced it.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: If you can pick this up for 50 bux or so you've gotten a pretty good deal.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good...

Pros: Cheap, powerfull, 5.1 amp with three digital inputs...and it sounds good.

Cons: None Yet

Other Thoughts: I read many reviews complaing that this thing runs hot, but mine does not get very warm at all. Maybee they are stacking things on top of the unit, or maybee they are not using good enough speeker cable, or maybee they are using the wrong kind of speekers...but with all of these things considered, it works at no more than ~120F. Plus there is room to add a couple of PC fans inside with ease if you want to stack stuff on it.

2 out of 5 eggsLasted a month

Pros: Sounded great for about a month.

Cons: I had it on at about 70 out of 80, which i had done many times. It shut off, and now it wont go over 50 without turning off.

Other Thoughts: Dont turn the volume up very high.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sound, low price

Pros: Very good sound, low cost, straightforward setup.

Cons: The buttons on the front of the unit have dark gray labels on a black background, and you simply will not be able to read them if the light is dim.

Other Thoughts: The designers probably shouldn't have bothered putting in the video connections at all instead of the half-hearted implementation they did do.

5 out of 5 eggsLasts a while

Pros: Awesome price for the features
Good Power
Plenty of connections for the price
Digital 5.1
6 channel Direct input (for hooking to a computer via analog)

Cons: It can get pretty hot (solved by hooking up a cooling fan.

The microphone jack failed, but only after 3+ years of usage.

Other Thoughts: I bought this a looong time ago on sale at Circuit City. It has been a trully reliable and excellent Receiver. Its perfect for hooking up to your X-Fi soundcard with its 6 channel direct input. It's optical and coax digital inputs are great if you have Azalia audio.

The only problems are that it has no cooling fans, and can get hot under heavy use. Also its really hard to read the button descrips because they are painted in a pale grey, thin text against the black receiver. In dim light its almost impossible to read the buttons without putting your face up to it.

5 out of 5 eggsNice unit for my needs

Pros: Price, quality.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Not using it in a sophisticated manner. DVD & Digital Cable feed directly into my 42" Sharp HDTV. From TV out to the receiver T'm running a digital optical cable. Just using a Sony 3 speaker setup. Left-Center-Right. Am very happy with the results at a 12 ft viewing-listening distance.

4 out of 5 eggsquality for cheap!

Pros: Very affordable way to get decent 5.1 surr sound. This is a good starting point for a home theater.
Very easy to use, reliable.

Cons: Missing the inputs and scalers of the higher end receivers, but for the price... what can you expect?

Other Thoughts: Used this for over a year on my HT system. I used mostly the 6 ch direct input (from computer), and the TOSLINK optical input (from DVD). Does not do the newer Dolby and DTS stuff that comes with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. As long you want a good start receiver this thing does the job well and at a MUCH lower cost than a new mid/high end receiver.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Solid construction, Sounds reasonable.

Cons: A constant white noise hiss is present on all channels all the time. It is not too bad when used with speakers, but with headphones, it is rather obvious. The dynamic range is not as great as I would like it to be.

Other Thoughts: A good pice of equipment, but the .9% THD is a bit awful.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Buy

Pros: Sound is good, power is good.

Not had any issues at all.

Would suggest to friends.

Powers my 8ohm speakers well. (see below)

I like the functionality of running headphones & speakers @ the same time, or just shutting speakers off.

Cons: Wish the remote control fully reflected receiver's font panel functions - & visa versa

Volume level starts @ 0 (on the display) but ends (max) @ 80? - which is quite loud, but a little strange number wise

Other Thoughts: I ordered this w/the SDAT HD-380's also from newegg, been very pleased w/both

- Takes a couple minutes & a quick manual reference to get settled in

- Running audio into it from pandora.com via SB Audigy 4/analog - sounds great, very loud but clean with a little EQ tweaking (less bass) on the computer end.
