Today's multi-component home theater systems must excel at working with component including DVD and CD players, cassette decks, VCRs, and satellite or cable inputs not to mention radio programming. Sherwood's A/V receivers are star performers, easily switching between inputs and encoding formats to produce brilliant, accurate sound.
This review is from: Sherwood RD-7405 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver
Pros: HDMI inputs, 7.1 surround
Cons: 1. Extremely low S/N (signal to noise) ratio. Meaning, there is a ton of background noise you only become aware of if you use any external amp. I had to buy a noise gate because it was so obnoxious. 2. Only audio outputs are those spring clamps for bare wire. Not a problem if you just have small home theater speakers though. 3. No HD radio. And unusually weak reception of certain frequencies (I bought an amplified antenna and attached it to my roof to try and fix, not much changed) 4. Power distribution between audio channels needs some fixing.
Other Thoughts: My subwoofer out port stopped functioning after about a year, luckily you can use the 2nd room function ports as a substitute. Currently, there are two main modes: Stereo and DTS (7.1). Stereo mode only marks the front left and front right speakers as active, while the other obviously enables all. The problem is, the receiver's built in algorithm sends specific frequencies to specific speakers, which isn't typically a great choice (except maybe a movie). There needs to be an option to enable stereo sound to not only the front, but also the side and rear speakers as well.
Basically, it's a reasonably priced receiver if you need HDMI and the surround sound. Just don't count on good quality audio at high db levels.
