I have an old HP computer that uses what they called a "Display Port" (but only made a plug-in cable to fit for about a week and a half). I see that the new Apple Lightning port is the same thing. I wonder if this cable could connect to a Lightning/USB cable to let me output video to my marine display?

This product is not for display port. Display port is to output computer video to a display device. Depending on which display port adaptor cable you have, the port can output either VGA, DVI, or HDMI. The product which you are asking of, is a USB video input device, (to input video into the computer for video capture). I use mine to input camera video to the computer for live streaming.

I see the specs say it can do real time capture playback, has anyone had any experience on how well this works and whether it is compatible with any good media players?

I used it extensively with Debut Video Capture from NCH (Version 1.88) to archive DVDs and VHS tapes.  It works just fine in both the Composite and S-VHS modes.  Debut, of course, has a monitor display window so you can watch while capturing in real time.  Debut is NOT a media player per se, but since you're only going to get standard definition TV through this device anyway, a smaller viewing widow wasn't really a big deal for me.

You'll need a media player with video capture capabilities or at least the ability to accept analog video signals since there's no TV tuner on this device.  I'm not very familiar with either Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player if you're considering those, but I don't think either of them has either capture capability or direct analog input capability.
