2 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: The cable itself is fine. Easy to plug in and run right off any VCR

Cons: I was hoping to use this cable to capture footage in Final Cut Pro. Sadly, it not only doesn't work on Mac, but offers no drivers to help.
So now I have to capture it in Windows, convert the files from the limited selection of formats the default program offers (avi, wmv, and mpeg), and transfer it to my other machine where I can edit

The program that comes with it to capture is just dreadful. When I tried to set the capture location to anything but its pre-chosen folder, a little box popped up saying "Please not use this file!"

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Capture for VHS and Hi8 archived video.

Pros: Great capture device to get your library of VHS and Hi8 or 8 video onto DVD or Bluray. Using and video capture software that is competent. I used Cyberlink or Photo elements or sony media, or Roxio or whatever does good video capturing for you.

Cons: Included software is very minimal and not very good would not use to archive my library of home movies. Use higher end software to capture video and edit.

Other Thoughts: Easy to use just plug into your video source that hast RCA stereo for audio and composit or S-video for your video source. VHS or Hi8 Camcorder and VCR outputs into usb2 or 3 work great. Have a competent video editing and capturing software package to pull your video and a fast processor and ram with lots of head room and you are in business runs great on new I core processors with 8 megs of ram and fast 7200 rpm hdd or sdd or hybrids and fast cd/dvd/bluray combo sata drive. When archiving you need a solid machine otherwise you will be wasting your time and getting very frustrated. Go to an outside reputable company and have them do your video editing and backups of old tapes if you don't have the time or computer machinery to handle this level of video processing and archiving. Great video capture device for the price and good value. Highly recommended with all the caveats.

2 out of 5 eggsMisleading item label.

Pros: na

Cons: This is NOT a USB to S-Video/Composite device. It is a S-Video/Composite to USB device. The newegg device name is incorrect and misleading.

Other Thoughts: Only buy this if you want to capture to your computer. If you want to output from the computer to an external device, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent IF...

Pros: If you can afford to buy Debut Video Capture instead of using the GrabBee program this ships with, the quality is HUGELY WAY BETTER! Now, don't expect to see big screen HD clarity or anything; all I'm doing is converting my VHS collection to DVD. Using GrabBee I was pretty unhappy, but with this Star Tech SVID2USB2 and Debut Video Capture, the results are really very nice!

Cons: Beware - unless you can kick out another $39.95 for better capture software, the image quality won't be anywhere near as good as just watching a VHS tape!

Other Thoughts: I could name the other brands of vid capture devices I've been very unhappy with but I think that's against Newegg policy. Suffice it to say that I just ordered another one of these for a spare backup unit now that I know they're good.

3 out of 5 eggsHardware - Great / Software Stinks

Pros: Simple to use, small and CHEAP.. 5 eggs if it was just the hardware..

Cons: The software stinks. I would not even bother installing it. This is the reason for dropping 2 eggs. The software is useless, so don't bother installing.

Other Thoughts: My system is Win 8 Enterprise, dell XPS-17 (701x). The software installs but is very unreliable if it runs at all.. Don't bother installing Grabee, it wont work. I can view video but forget about recording, empty files. The DVD create software will work for capturing but only the non-preview version so unless you have an external tv attached its useless..
It apears the encode for this hardware based on Windows Media Encoder which was dropped with win 7 sp2. If you can find a third party download of Windows Media Encoder 9, google search, it works great and does what i need with this hardware..

2 out of 5 eggsvcr to avi

Pros: worked great while it worked

Cons: audio capture failed after 6 hours of capture from a vhs tape. startech help suggested that windows 7 had messed up the audio driver and referred me to a new driver on their website. didn't help. startech concluded that the device itself was defective and recommended return to newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Does the job with very little loss of audio/video quality. I have recorded several hours of VHS tapes so far and have not noticed any audio/video sync problems as you would find with other devices.

Cons: As hundreds of reviewers have mentioned, the instructions should really be re-written as they are confusing.
Also, the GrabBee software included leaves a lot to be desired but it does the job of capturing from my VCR to PC and that's all I was looking for.

Other Thoughts: I have tried several other (affordable) capturing devices and this one is the leader of the pack in my opinion. You can't go wrong with this product!

5 out of 5 eggsSaved my memories

Pros: It does what is supposed to,I was able to transfer all my VHS tapes to my computer. The included software supports PAL so i was able to transfer even my tapes from overseas. Worked both on 32bit and 64bit of vista and 7

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The sound seems out of sync while you are recording but on playback is fine

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Did the job. Old cassettes saved to CD preserving family memories. Included software is useable.

Cons: Connections are not readily apparent. Had to purchase an adapter and switch between inputs to get the right setup.
