5 out of 5 eggsDecent DVR

Pros: Been using this for over 1 year. My other DVR (HR22) seems sluggish at times. Over the past few years it appears DirecTV has been adding software overhead and causing the HR22 to slow down?

The HR23 doesn't seem to have as much problem with performance.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Years ago I had DirecTV TiVos and really liked those UIs. DirecTV is not quite as slick as TiVo, but they do have a few UI features TiVo did not have (when I last used a TiVo).

1 out of 5 eggsTHIS IS A LEASE

Pros: LOOKS GOOD, BUT SENT BACK DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT DISCLOSED THAT THIS WAS A LEASE AND NOT A PURCHASE

Cons: ONCE YOU CALL AND ACTIVATE THIS, DIRECTV AUTOMATICALLY EXTENDS YOUR CONTRACT 2 YEARS. THIS IS NOT A PURCHASE...............................

3 out of 5 eggsDirectTV - Criminals

Pros: Performs a little better than ther hr22's, and the larger hard drive is a plus. It is their best reciever yet. However HR24 is coming soon, and from what I understand has a much faster CPU, and completely banishes the poor performance experienced in all their other recievers.

Cons: In order to activate DirectTV obligated me to another 2 years of service. I was surprised, and dissapointed by this.

Other Thoughts: All though DirectTV service is in my opinion better than cable. Their polocies, and customer service really lag behind.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat equipment

Pros: Good size hard drive can even add external one. Nice networking capabilities.

Cons: Yes, sometimes the menu and remote responses move real slow

Other Thoughts: As a former employee of directv yes the equipment is leased, end of story. If you look on the box it comes in it clearly says "Attention: This receiver is a leased product..." On the access card package it states that by opening it, you agree to the terms. The bottom line, as of 2007 any new equip is going to be leased.

5 out of 5 eggssame as you get from directv

Pros: it is HD has lots of space on it. expandable with an esata external hdd. looks good.

Cons: it is a lease. you technically don't own the box. some tv's can't be programmed into the remote to function 100%

Other Thoughts: it's a great deal when on sale. directv installers charge a service fee to deliver a hd box to you if you order it from them

1 out of 5 eggsThis receiver is slow as molasses

Pros: HD output. Large HD. All outputs active at the same time. MVR support. External HD expansion.

Cons: Absolutely unacceptably slow response from the remote and front panel.

Other Thoughts: I kid you not. Many times it is 5 seconds + to change a channel. Reboots, firmware updates, nothing helps. I have no idea what would be a better choice, but I ABSOLUTELY would not buy (lease?) this unit. Direct TV really missed the boat on this one.

5 out of 5 eggsLeased

Pros: leading edge of HD

Cons: just like all HD stuff you may have a problem or 2 but thats normal, also the warranty is not 90days but forever since its leased as long as you don't break it yourself dtv will replace it after making you do troublshooting.

Other Thoughts: to MilkyTech you should directv up and check your account.
1. Pull your account up
2. Take the Access Card out of the DVR from the left hand side
3. read numbers above the barcode to agent
4. now you be explained its LEASED
5. Agent will say "Do you have any more questions i can help you with" and they will hang up. you MilkyTech are now in a 24month agreement with that DVR i'm sorry the agent didn't tell you but your are out of luck.

4 out of 5 eggsWrong Info

Pros: HR23 is the only Directv HD ird that does not require you to have those B-band converters on the lines for HD. which is great. otherwise the same as a HR22

Cons: Will fail randomly like the rest over time. its how Dvrs work

Other Thoughts: Just to clear things up i also work at Directv Tech Call Center and i can tell you now that all you people who call in to actv these irds is subject to leased and 24 agreement. I kid you not! i have to fight with people everyday and i understand newegg doesn't feel like listing it but to OWN a HD DVR is $499 straight up. THIS IS A LEASED HD DVR no way around it, go on auction websites and buy one if you really want.

I hoop to chat with you soon :P

5 out of 5 eggsIt is **NOT** Owned

Pros: Excellent receiver at an Excellent price but I can ASSURE you once activated it is **NOT** considered owned by DirecTV. It **IS** leased and must be returned to DirecTV upon service cancellation. It is understandable that Newegg might misunderstand this and if DirecTV told you otherwise you were misinformed.

3 out of 5 eggsregrettable

Pros: I guess there are some features with this model that older models don't have, however, I have not found a need for any of these features as of yet.
You DO own it.

Cons: seems to be much slower than my HR10 as far as navigating through menus and guides.

Other Thoughts: After speaking with several people at both newegg and directv, i finally found out that you DO actually own this box if you buy it here. NOBODY at directv was sure about it (so ignore that review buy the guy who claims to work for directv), but after working my way through the peons here at newegg and getting to a more important person who knows, I was told that ANYTHING purchased from newegg is owned.
When you open the box, there is a lease agreement inside, however, i imagine that is standard inside every brand new box.
Just don't fill out and sign the agreement!
When I called directv to activate the box, I did NOT have to agree to any lease terms, NOR did i have to extend my contract with them. it was simply activated and now its mine! they don't have any idea where it was purchased, or IF it was even purchased. for all they know, I could've pulled it from a garbage pail (which would clearly make it OWNED, not Leased). All that being said, I like my older HR10 better.
