4 out of 5 eggsWorking as designed

Pros: Easy install although extra cable length needed for my situation

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: used for keeping generator battery charged. Panel gets minimum 5 hrs solar exposure per day this time of year

4 out of 5 eggsReasonable investment

Pros: Ease of use. Not too large.

Cons: Inefficient (You could get the same output from smaller solar chargers using a different type of PV panel, or greater output from one the same size as this with better PV material).

Other Thoughts: Most reviewers are missing the point of the solar charger. It absolutely is not designed, built, or marketed for the purpose of "going green" or reducing utility power consumption.

What it is designed and marketed for is the task of maintaining a battery between uses, and that is what it does. Given the choice of dealing with a dead battery on my seldom-used boat, RV, spare car, or garden tractor, I'd much rather have one of these saving me the hassle of digging out the booster cables or charger and the expense of replacing batteries more often than should be necessary. For seldom-used or seasonal equipment, this is the best solution I've found for keeping my batteries charged.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks ok for a bit,

Pros: Adds a decent solar charge in a roughly small profile, fine for charging cell phones other then that don't bother get the 15watt one.

Cons: I bought the unit to keep my car battery topped off, plugged it into the cigarette lighter and did help. However, the black plastic surrounding the panel first started to bend and distort then the cracking began. Bottom line, it won't handle sitting in direct sunlight which is a problem for a solar panel. I've accounted for the extra temp being in the car, but even ventilation didn't seem to help the inevitable. Currently the panel works, but 2 sides are about to fall off because a crack on one of the corners has now totally gone through. Anyway, my description no matter how bad I say the bends, cracks, and total distortion of the entire outer casing is nothing compared to actually seeing it. It's VERY BAD, I have owned it for about 2 years now, the bending started roughly 8m to 1yr after ownership.

Other Thoughts: The only thing I could recommend would be carefully painting the outer casing white or applying white tape all around it to help it from absorbing so much heat. I also live in the NE, so it's not like Miami where the interior car heat would be hotter than usual all year long.

5 out of 5 eggsSolar Happy

Pros: Charges the battery and doesn't require an outlet.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I purchase this to condition my lawn tractor battery late fall and early spring. It worked fantastic and my lawn tractor battery was fully charged and ready to go this spring. I use my pickup sparingly during the winter and found it turning over very slowly so I decided to try this unit in the truck window. It worked great and my pu turned right over after sitting for weeks.

4 out of 5 eggs3.8 Watts

Pros: Cells sandwiched between two glass panels.
No battery discharge at low light .

Cons: Lack of technical data (e.g manufacturer's product page).
About 12 $/W for a thin film panel.

Other Thoughts: Measured it on clear sky days at noon, pointing it directly at the sun, and get no more than 3.77W.
(e.g. St. Louis, MO, 2-Apr-2011, Sun 57° above horizon, within 15 minutes of solar noon)

Volt Ampere Watt Comment
0.10 0.309 0.03 max current
10.60 0.276 2.93
12.70 0.265 3.37 normal battery charge
13.40 0.260 3.48
16.80 0.225 3.78 max power
23.45 0.000 0.00 max voltage
Plastic frame around glass panel is 337 x 352 x 16 mm.
Active area is 290 x 290 mm, patterned into 16 stripes. I wonder how 16 cells give about 24 V open circuit, but am happy with that.
Less satisfying is the low power per area: 45 Watt per square meter (4.5 mW/sq.cm) is not much, but may be normal for thin film panels. It's around 5% efficiency, assuming there were 950W/square meter coming in at clear-sky-noon.

Reverse current at 12.8V in dark is negligible: less than 1.3 micro-ampere.

5 out of 5 eggsFor my 20' runabout boat in open storage it works great

Pros: *Arrived in good condition well packed.
*The two adapters: battery clips and the convenient DC adapter.
*The instruction manual states that you can take the existing cord and splice in an extension if you need it (I think up to 25'). I thought that was good of them to say that instead of something like, "it will void your warranty."
*The stock cord is long enough to plug into the DC adapter on my boat dash (20' long x 8' beam), go over the windshield, down the cover, up over the cover and I'm able to place the panel in the middle of the boat on top of the cover. I like it there so it is difficult for others to notice it.
*I didn't even think about buying this for payback -- getting free juice from the sun -- I got it for convenience to keep my boat battery charged in storage away from the house.

Cons: *Made in China, but what isn't these days. Sad.
*It is on sale now for $5 less than the shell shocker deal I bought it for. :(

Other Thoughts: I went to the lake once after letting the boat sit for several weeks and it wouldn't turn over. What a pain in the derrierre (avoiding the B word here) trying to get a jump or locate a jump pack on the launch ramp.
I also let a battery get damaged by not charging it over the winter. This will prevent that as well.

4 out of 5 eggsPayback may not be so long.

Pros: On a pure cost per kwh basis, it will never pay for itself. On the other hand, if you have it attached to your boat or snowmobile battery it might save your rear or at least a lot of inconvenience.

Cons: $70 too much.

Other Thoughts: $40 not so bad.

5 out of 5 eggsOne important detail

Pros: For 30 bux this is a no brainer. I left my RV battery unattended this summer and it discharged and died. Cost to replace the battery? 70 bux.

This solar charger will keep it topped off and in working condition.

Cons: I hope someone does not steal it.

3 out of 5 eggsProblem with calculations

Pros: socially positive if people see it

Cons: not practical

Other Thoughts: In the calculations people assume the battery can take in all the power this thing produces. Sometimes the battery will be full already.

I have a Coleman, however, and it was useful once in charging a car that was left idle for weeks. That made it worthwhile alone.

I will likely get one of these and mount it to my dash just for the cachet really.

5 out of 5 eggswait a minute

Pros: Cordless, pays for itself eventually, reduces green house gases a tiny little bit, works as well as or better than dirty fuel fed devices, should last 20-30 years as it has no moving parts.

Cons: costs more upfront.

Other Thoughts: So what if this thing takes 26 years to pay for itself? The traditional plug in type charger never ever pays for itself. Ever. After you buy the traditional one, then you pay more to the utility ever month until it breaks, then you throw it in a landfill and buy a new one. So that makes this one a bad deal?? Anything solar is good for you and the planet you live on, even including the environmental cost of producing solar panels. Besides, the right payback is the amount of the premium over the plug in kind, which cost $25 or so for cheesy ones. So payback is more like 13 years. Not many things pay for themselves after all.
