Polk's Monitor Series has been the gold standard of speakers since the 1970's. This current generation features clear, accurate sound with strong bass and exception aural imaging. Polk made the enclosures out of MDF to be of a uniform density and not resonate. They've also included ¾" thick baffles to help produce clear lifelike sound.

The two 5.25" cones are made from a bi-laminate composite for an optimal balance of weight and rigidity. The small driver delivers a wide open sound and exceptional responsiveness. The 1" tweeter is a fabric/polymer composite the responds swiftly to the high efficiency Neodymium magnet. The crossovers between the drivers use Mylar bypass capacitors to let all of the details in the higher frequencies shine through.

No matter how good they sound, they have to look good too. Their contemporary look complements today's flat panel televisions and modern decorating styles.

  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor 40 boasts dual 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers and a 1" dynamic balance silk/polymer composite dome tweeter to deliver crisp highs and accurate lows for an immersive listening experience.
  • newegg Magnetically Shielded The magnetically-shielded Polk Audio Monitor 40 can be put at any proximity to display devices such as TVs and LCD monitors without loss of sound quality caused by interference.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great sound and great low price.

Cons: Possibly the size but I knew before hand that they are large.

Other Thoughts: Intended to use them as my fronts but ended up using them as rears. They blend well with the rest of my Polk Monitor speakers.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Things Come in Small Packages

Pros: I cannot imagine a speaker being any more articulate and crisp as this. I know most of the reviews have mentioned the clarity, but I am still blown away by it. Whether its the trumpets on a Blood Sweat & Tears album, the Fuzzy electric guitar on Jefferson Airplanes Good Shepard or the Joni Mitchell two track acoustic on Cold Blue Steel, these speakers can really deliver.

Cons: I like to lay bookshelf speakers flat. A rotating Polk emblem would've been nice.

Other Thoughts: Amazing sound to size ratio. You can tell from my music selections that I go back a few years. These speakers are a fifth of the size of the old AR4X or Dynaco 25's which were the standard bookshelf speakers once upon a time.

Pros: Big sound in a small package. Extremely clean sound.
Matches perfectly with the CS2 center channel.
Very sturdy with a good amount of heft. Very nice build and finish.
Bi-amping ready.

Cons: This is not you normal wimpy bookshelf speaker.
These are deep and tall.

Other Thoughts: Great price, great item and great shipping. POLK and NEWEGG are great indeed.

5 out of 5 eggsBuy them while you can!

Pros: Fantastic sound quality. I've been a self proclaimed audiophile since the 70's. These, combined with the PWS 10 sub provide a wonderful sound experience. I'm using them for music played at low to very moderate volume levels. These accurately reproduce musical details that my old hi end, many years old speakers lost. Polk considers them a discontinued model with their current replacement retailing for $299.00. Good luck finding the current model discounted. I missed them here at Newegg twice being sold out. I'm very happy I purchased them before they are gone for good.

Cons: None. The size is just fine with me.

Other Thoughts: I originally purchased these for regular music playback. But, because of their capability, I'm switching them to my audio editing workstation replacing my old expensive near field monitors.

As usual, 5 stars for Newegg! THE best E-retailer on line.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Deal Around

Pros: Price, quality & sound !

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Purchased these based on other reviews, and the Polk name. I wanted to up date my surround sound and boy was I impressed, especially for the price I got them for !! I have four of these and the Polk psw10 10" sub, hooked to my Sony receiver. The sound is amazing, whether I'm listening to music or watching a movie. I found these speakers ( in my set up) are sufficient and actually surpass my needs, crisp and deep sounding, without overdoing it.They are not wall mounting speaker (clearly stated in the description) but I have them on Sanus Basic 31" Wood Speaker Stands - BF-31-B, which are perfect for these. All in all, I am glad I purchased these and would recommend these to any budget minded shopper who wants big price sound. If these are indeed discontinued, definitely do yourself a favor and grab them while you can, you won't be disappointed !! Thanks newegg, can't beat your price !!

4 out of 5 eggsNice bookshelf speakers

Pros: Just right for speaker stands, well made, great sound!

Cons: Wire connections, would probably need a sub to use as front speakers.

Other Thoughts: I bought these nearly half off the regular price and judging from other polk products I've heard in the past, it was too good of a deal to pass up. Great sound and perfect size. I bought these specifically to replace my old surround speakers and they are excellent.

The only down side are the wire connections are not constructed to use a banana plug connector, which I tend to prefer. Besides that, if you wanted to use them as front speakers, you'd probably need a subwoofer to get that really deep bass.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall Size, Large Sound

Pros: Never having owned Polk speakers before, I didn't know exactly how good they are. My old (stereo) speakers were huge. Two and a half feet high. They had 12 inch woofers; the only way to get good bass in the past with stereo systems. These speakers blow them away when coupled with a sub-woofer. I have four of these for the corners of my 5.1 system. I couldn't be happier. They may seem large compared to the speakers that come in HTIB packages, but they have SO much more quality and way better sound.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I tried 2 HTIB systems first. I was unhappy with them both for various reasons...mainly lack of quality. To keep the price down on the system, they had to cheapen and downsize everything. These are fullsize, well built speakers. I have them in a system with a moderately priced Sony reciever, a center Polk speaker and a Klipsch sub. I turn this system on, and I am in heaven.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent sound, superbly designed.

Pros: Great sound, instrument separation, and very bright to my ears. I've used the legendary Monsoon Planarmedia 9 set in my primary rig for nearly 10 years now and these sound just as good (with more power projection). I purchased these primarily for audio content creation, metal and trance, and they're going to be great for that (despite the lack of sub-quality bass). Other people on here claim the bass is weak but it really is not, it's just not "subwoofer" bass. If you don't expect subwoofer bass, you won't be disappointed. For the price there isn't much better out there.

Cons: Huge and bulky, rear firing so wall mounting is iffy, and doesn't come with wall mount brackets or functionality.

Other Thoughts: Great deal for the price, sounds comparatively as good as speakers costing 5-10 times the price. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsPolk Delivers

Pros: Very clean sound.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Read the reviews and was worried about the bass but these babies sound great with or without a sub woofer.
