Polk Audio PSW Series PSW10 Black 10in. Powered Subwoofer

Description

The PSW10 subwoofer fills in the bottom end of your home theater system so your main speakers only reproduce the mid and high frequencies, not perform bass duty, too. If you're looking for your first subwoofer, look no further than the PSW10. It's a great solution for completing your sound system and will take your viewing experience, movies, games and TV to a higher level of enjoyment.

PSW10
PSW10
PSW10

Don't make your front stage speakers do all the work. Instead, add a subwoofer to your system. You'll free up your front stage to be more dynamic and expansive by letting the subwoofer take over the low frequency effects, the thrills of movies and the deep bass of soundtracks. We design the intelligent amplifiers in our subwoofers to filter the low frequencies cleanly and smoothly, for better blending with the full audio spectrum being reproduced by your main speakers. Easily accessible, professional-grade connections give you multiple options for hooking up, so you can tweak your performance according to your own system needs. Add a subwoofer - or two. And turn your TV watching into a wild ride and your music listening into a live-on-stage experience.

Don't Go Subwooferless
CNet.com says, "The PSW10's deep-bass capabilities were impressive, but its definition and control...were really special." Big, affordable, and fun. Add deep bass excitement and extended dynamic thrills to your music or movie sound system with an easy to choose, easy to connect, and easy to use powered subwoofer.

Features

PSW10
  • PSW enclosures are designed and engineered for perfect volume, minutely tuned for distortion-free low frequencies, and internally braced and damped to eliminate internal standing waves and other performance-robbing resonances.
  • Quality materials translate into better power handling, less wasted energy, and bigger, deep bass.
  • This unique configuration uses a specially tuned and directed port to more efficiently produce maximum bass impact.
  • Combining just the right driver materials, speaker geometry and enclosure construction techniques has a synergistic effect that produces cleaner, clearer sound. This is our patented Dynamic Balance® process, and it helps our woofers perform effortlessly under the stress of high output source material.
  • PSW subwoofers outperform the competition with durable, resonance-free Dynamic Balance driver materials that stay stiff and move fast. You experience deep, musical low frequencies and thrilling effects with superior system blending.
  • Our state-of-the-art Klippel distortion analyzer optimizes the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for smooth, unimpeded movement over a broad spectrum of the lower frequencies to ensure the best, most efficient performance even at extreme listening levels.
  • Easily accessible, professional-grade line- and speaker-level inputs, and speaker level outputs, allow easy connection to any system.
  • Smart sensing circuitry knows when to turn itself on and off. Superior compression circuitry limits distortion at extreme volume levels. Intelligent amplifier also features adjustable low-pass crossover, phase switch and subwoofer volume controls to professionally control your bass output and the subwoofer's blending characteristics with your front stage speakers.
  • PSW Series subwoofers blend perfectly with systems composed of other Polk loudspeakers, especially TSi, RM and R/T/M Series speakers.
  • Unique design keeps your subwoofer stable and steady even at radical volume levels, for more efficient use of power. No more "escaped washing machine" syndrome.
  • All Polk products are made using the best materials and the most advanced manufacturing techniques. They pass the industry's most exhaustive quality tests, including drop testing, extreme signal response and UV and salt exposure testing. Polk loudspeakers are built to perform for a lifetime.

4 out of 5 eggsNumber 2 Subwoofer

Pros: Not that kind of number 2----I mean second unit.
Looks nice. Sounds Nice. Good value.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Nothing gets 5 stars because praise beyond a certain point can result in complacency. I really have no issues at all with this unit on all fronts----price, performance and appearance.

My 5.1 system started with a YAMAHA SW315 sub and I was at first happy with everything, but the room is too big, and for the occasional party music, I noticed the impact of the bass dropped off on the other side of the 25 x 30 space. So I started shopping and with pre-established appreciation of my other Polk speakers I was already primed to push the buy button when this went on sale. When it arrived I was subject to Raised Eyebrows and Glances from Her. "We need two subwoofers?----Really?" But I achieved at least overt vindication when I staged for Her a before and after demo.

So, bottom line, though I rarely run this sub alone, I can confirm that with proper placement and at moderate volume levels, it performs very nicely as a number two unit and it looks gorgeous----unlike the Yamaha, which is a REALLY NICE punchy sub, but looks kind of weird, like a cross between a lunar lander and an IKEA footstool, and now sits behind the couch.

5 out of 5 eggsShakes my apartment

Pros: - Very good quality for the pricing.
- Simple setup with my Yamaha RX-V379BL
- Very powerful for my small apartment but there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
- No distortion in anything I've been listening to - Games, Music, XBMC.
- I can make it shake the walls.
- 5 Year Warranty.

Cons: I haven't encountered a single thing wrong with it, and I've been using it regularly for months.

Other Thoughts: I Got this to pair up with my JBL Loft speakers I also purchased from newegg, and my Yamaha RX-V379BL. All together makes a teriffic 5.1 Surround sound experience. When I had it in my living room, the sound was godly compared to my 50' Vizio's speakers, and filled the room quite well. Now however, I have my setup in my office (8 x 12) which is smaller than my livingroom and saying that the sound fills the room is an understatement, it envelops you. If the room you arent trying to fill is huge, and you dont want to punch your bank account in the face buying a sub, I would highly suggest this one.

5 out of 5 eggsLow and tight and a great 50w x2 clean full range amp

Pros: The full range sounds bright and a little louder from the amp to my polk T15 bookshelf speakers than my headunit I use with my pc. Easy install and crossover frequency adjustment.

Cons: Not certain if the power out is crossed over. The label does not say if the crossover level is only for the subwoofer speaker. My speakers sound like they are but cannot be certain.

3 out of 5 eggsits "okay"

Pros: It arrived safely and undamaged in just two business days.

Its not a bad subwoofer for the money given I bought on sale. It paired up with my audio engine A5's easily enough.

Cons: Instead of authentic style drum beat it just has that drowned down pushing air effect.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent but plenty of problems

Pros: Plenty of volume for only 50W
Clean, attractive look with filter on or off
*Capable* of really clean bass
Compact size

Cons: Very boomy out of the box. Some people love that, but a kick drum should sound like a kick drum, not a formless mass of pressure waves.

But everyone says that sort of thing, so I'll give some more info. Ideally, when a kick drum goes off, you should feel the brief shift in pressure, you should hear the higher pitched vibrations of the membrane, and you should be able to distinguish exactly when the drummer's pedal hits the drum.

These extra sounds are what distinguish a drum from an electronic beat. Any halfway decent recording in mp3 format will have those sounds embedded, but people don't hear them because the air in their sub keeps moving around.

That's "boomy." And that's what this sub is.

Beyond that, it has terrible port noise. Port noise is what happens when the air being moved by the back of the subwoofer's driver passes through the port fast enough to be heard. It's like an added shiver in the sound whenever something loud and bassy happens, and sounds almost like the speaker is being blown.

Both of these problems can be mitigated with the liberal application of polyfil, but they shouldn't have to be.

Other Thoughts: Despite the nagativity, I am still using this sub in my (partially custom built) home theater today. With my modifications and good placement, it sounds awesome with everything.

Just understand that you can't get that lasting quality without pumping a ton of polyfil into every corner of the thing.

3 out of 5 eggsOnly OK

Pros: Purchased for $79.99.

Cons: Regardless of many shining reviews, the PSW10 sounds muddy sounding to me.
Got this to add second sub but really does not compare to my Klipsch K-100SW is sound quality/definition or powerful reproduction you would expect from a subwoofer.
No LFE connection.
Below 35hz the sub bottoms out and there is awful port chuffing noise.
Cheap speaker cover

Other Thoughts: Better for music reproduction, not so much for home theater.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: I bought this Polk Sub because I have 5 other Polk speakers that work and sound great! This on I added to a Vizio sound Bar that worked ok. Added the 10" Polk powered sub and really brought it to life. These go on sale pretty often and are a great addition to sound bar's.
I bought a 12" for my main surround system and it really brought it alive also. When there is gun fire or fireworks our little dog come running because he thinks it is real.
I saw someone say the sound was distorted, there are adjustments on the back of these to tune that out. I like that it comes on when needed and off when not in use, very handy when placed in hard to reach area's. I have had mine about 3 years with no problems at all.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Wait for one to come on sale, or not and buy one without thinking twice. In my Opinion!!

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Flexible configuration--can either feed it a line in from your receiver, or tap your speakers directly. Phase switch to simply resolution of phase problems. Auto power-off function that detects when receiver has been powered off and powers off the sub as well.

Cons: Setting the crossover frequency is a bit tricky. There's a fine line between "where's the bass?" and "WHOOOMPH!" At higher output levels, tends to sound a little muddy.

Other Thoughts: Bought to replace an old passive Kenwood sub on a dying Kenwood receiver. Originally drove this off the front speakers (make sure to set your receiver to "large speakers" for the front speakers, else the receiver's internal crossover will remove most of the bass) of my old Kenwood receiver. When I replaced the Kenwood with a Yamaha unit that provides a line-level subwoofer out, I reconfigured to use the line input. Both configurations were satisfying and had a similar feel for the bass.
