5 out of 5 eggsGreat Polk Speaker

Pros: They sound better than they should for the price. Smooth mids and highs. The bass is surprisingly good for the size and design. Can't go wrong for fifty bucks. These make great surrounds and if paired with a decent sub, fine fronts.

Cons: They seem to be no longer available anywhere for less than $100. Wish I'd gotten another pair at the NE sale price.

Other Thoughts: These speakers really benefit from a good break-in period. After 40 hours, there is noticable improvement. This evaluation is based on about 100 hours of playing time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal

Pros: I am impressed with the overall sound of these. They are glorified bookshelf speakers with a built in stand. I put them through the paces at around 60% volume , with and without sub. and was impressed. Now that they are warming up , I go 70-75 % volume and I am considering forgoing getting a more pricey set of towers and getting another pair for rears .

Cons: First day I got them , I didn't even open the box, wanted them to warm up from the cold. Next morning hook them up and BAM both woofers blow before I hit 55% volume. Called Polk Customer Support, and they sent me replacement woofers out that day . Total call time took about ten minutes and was refreshing to get great customer service. Got replacement in 4 days, was easy to swap out , and now sound fantastical.

Other Thoughts: These speakers , paired with my PSW10, make me feel like us poorer folk can afford some very nice quality home theater/music. San Demis High School Football Rules!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsSounds great

Pros: For the price, they sound amazing. I was concerned about the bass, as many folks have commented about the lack of bass. But for 6.5" drivers, the bass is outstanding. Much better than I would have ever thought you could get without larger woofers. But, yes, technically they aren't going to be that great for the very low bass or the LFE channel. But unless you are considering buying a full range speaker with at least a 10" woofer, you won't get much better than these. And again, keep the price in mind, as I got these for cheaper than what shipping should have been!

Cons: They are top-heavy, and I have very thick carpet, so I have to keep the wife from setting stuff on it (vases, etc) as a small bump will topple it.

Other Thoughts: I am going to experiment with digging out some old speakers I have with 12" woofers and taking the guts out of these and bi-amping the combo of the two. Won't need to mess with crossovers that way, just tell the receiver what frequency to send to the bass channel of the bi-amp.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy pay more?

Pros: Full range of sound. Terrific price. Quality cabinet.

Cons: Poor shipping box.

Other Thoughts: I was debating on a budget home stereo system. Had $500 to spend for everything. First purchase was the Yamaha V373, which was $200. Next I got the Polk PSW10 subwoofer for $80.Was using some old Technics speakers, so next was to upgrade those. Came very close to buying the Pioneer Andrew Jones set, until I saw Newegg had the R300 towers and R150 bookshelf speakers on sale recently for cheaper. Picked up a set of each of those, then the CSR center was on sale for $55. Now it's all complete and I must say it sounds awesome. The R300's will surprise you! Bass you get outta these is more than I expected, but I have the system crossed over to utilize the sub anyways. I'm very happy with the R300's and glad I didn't buy the Pioneer FS52 for over2x the price! In the end I came in way under my $500 budget, so the wife is happy. Took her to Red Lobster with the remaining $$.

1 out of 5 eggsExpected an audio upgrade

Pros: The free shipping & fast delivery was nice. My kids loved the empty cardboard boxes.

Cons: Several months ago, I gave away my wife's old gigantic 1990's speakers in prep for installing hardwood flooring. Last week, I ordered these Polk units off the internet on a shopping whim assuming these had to be better than the old units. To my surprise they are not. The sound is really off and now suspect this is what you get from a 2-way speaker. I'm not an electronics guy but bought new 16 gauge speaker wire and made 100% sure I connected them correctly. Very lackluster and disappointing sound. I do not have a sub woofer (didn't really want one) but maybe that will help the overall sound.

Other Thoughts: Way to big to ship back so I'm stuck with my folly.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent sound for the price

Pros: Price; elevation of sound from floor; Polk brand dependability; reasonable range of response; solid build; Newegg dependability; 5 eggs if just a tad more bass (but being a bit critical at the price)

Cons: Need a subwoofer for full sound in a large room; not a "front" speaker in a surround sound, but a very good rear speaker

Other Thoughts: System: matched with a Kenwood KR-V7020 running in a basement set up (huge room with concrete walls); unfortunately no sub-woofer output bought for $20 at garage sale (still great value).

I bought these on a whim to replace 35 year old 8" Realistic bookshelf speakers still running fine bought when I was in 8th grade (now in the garage). Price (south of three figures for a pair on special delivered) too much to pass up.

Overall - very pleased, but not as much bass as the 35 yr old speakers put out. Highs are crisper though so I'll call this a "win". Still, if you can get the Monitor 60 series Polks (or their replacement) around $100 a piece, I woud rate that a steal and opt for those for the money.

For those on a budget - consider a PSW10 Polk subwoofer for less than $100 (sometimes a lot less!) to round out the starter system - amazingly fills the room with sound.

As for Newegg shipping, I have bought two receivers, two pairs of speakers, and three subwoofers without a ding and always on time shipping from Edison, NJ to central Wisconsin.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value speakers

Pros: Outstanding cost to performance ratio. These aren't going to blow away your audiophile friends, but they deliver good, honest sound at a great price, particularly since they're often available for half a Benjamin.

Overall sound is very balanced to my ears, with no offensive elements to it - they also play very nicely with the Polk CS1 center.

Cons: Packaging is somewhat flimsy, with a fairly light cardboard box and some styrofoam endcaps/spacers being the only protection against the rigors of UPS transit. The boxes of mine were punctured and definitely worse for wear, but the speakers were (miraculously) intact.

Other Thoughts: For a Home Theater on a budget, these are hard to beat, and will work very nicely in the front and surround positions in such a setup. You can spend a lot more, but these speakers set the bar for where diminishing returns starts to kick in pretty hard.
