Polk Audio RC85i High Performance In-Wall Speaker Pair
Let's change our point of view. Instead of having four big box speakers all around our home theater room, let's see what happens if we remove two, or even all four. Let's take away the boxes, and all the wiring clutter and floor space they take up, and let's do some simple construction. Cut some holes in our walls, fish some wire, and drop in some remarkable built-in speakers. Now we have no speaker clutter, lots more breathing space in our room, and we haven't sacrificed a lot of performance. That's because we dropped in RCi Series in-wall speakers. Big sound from Dynamic Balance® tuned drivers, aimable tweeters for exact imaging, and no internal resonances with the simple, secure Rotating Cam installation. Where's all that great sound coming from? Nowhere! Everywhere! All around!

A Monster Audiophile In-Wall

The RC85i features a big 8-inch driver, perfect for applications that demand higher volume levels and deeper bass response. Build a completely stealth home theater system (with the RC85i as your left/center/right stage, and a pair or more of RC65i as your surrounds), or complete a more traditional speaker system with additional multi-zone sound. Use the floor space you save to add more chairs, invite some friends over.

RC85i Features:

  • Easy one-cut, drop-in installation puts built-in audio within reach, with Perfect Fit templates, a precision flange, and (available) pre-construction brackets; achieve secure, vibration-free efficiency with a simple turn of the patented Rotating Cam system.
  • With infinite baffle tuning, RCi speakers utilize the "virtual enclosure" of your in-wall and in-ceiling space to enhance their bass response and smooth low frequency blending with the midrange.
  • Lightweight and stiff blue polymer cones deliver excellent damping and bass response.
  • Durable, computer-modeled, injection-molded butyl rubber surrounds suppress unwanted cone resonances for a lifetime of reliable sound.
  • Aimable swivel tweeters for greater accuracy and more realistic imaging. (All models except RC6s.)
  • Polk's proprietary, patented Dynamic Balance technology allows our engineers to design out distortion-causing driver and system resonances, so you only hear the good sounds.
  • Klippel motor optimization uses laser measurement technology to ensure a smooth excursion path at either end of the volume spectrum for uniform performance at both low and high volumes.
  • Rustproof stainless steel hardware, durable butyl rubber surrounds and powder coated aluminum (in-ceiling) & painted steel (in-wall) grilles make RCi Series speakers suitable for high moisture areas like bathrooms, transitional spaces or even under eaves or in the ceiling of an enclosed porch. (RCi series are not suitable for exposed outdoor use. For outdoor speaker fun, use our Atrium® Series.)
  • Paintable grilles let you build them in, and then forget all about them; RCi Series speakers practically disappear into any room.
  • RCi Series speakers are timbre-matched to other Polk speakers to insure utterly seamless blending from speaker to speaker in systems that combine traditional and built-in speakers.
  • All Polk products are made using the best materials and the most advanced manufacturing techniques. They pass the industry's most exhaustive quality tests, including drop testing, extreme signal response and UV & salt exposure testing. Polk loudspeakers are built to perform for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 eggsSpectacular!

Pros: Amazing sounding speakers. Crisp, clean highs and solid, thumping midbass. I have 3 set of these with a Polk center channel in a 7.1 setup on a Marantz NR1605 in a small acoustic room. Even at high volumes these drivers sound fantastic!

Cons: Only downside is the mounting arms could swing just a little more. I had a small issue with a couple of them up against a stud. Thankfully I had access to the other side of the wall and was able to adjust accordingly.

5 out of 5 eggsPolk in wall speakers

Pros: Excellent range, excellent value, well packaged and engineered.

Cons: A bit large in size.

Other Thoughts: Be aware that when cutting holes for these, keep sides at least an inch or preferably two inches from studs. If your opening lines up right on a stud, be prepared for a fight.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

Pros: Good and well rounded sound for bass, treble and voice. I am using these as the only speakers in kitchen driven by Yamaha RXV receiver. I also have inwalls RC60i and RC80i, and the RC85i definitely sounds better. I also pushed some sound insulation over the speaker before I fixed in place to reduce vibration.

Cons: 1. Big size. Better do your homework before you cut that hole.

2. Square shape can look odd in a ceiling full of round objects (lights, smoke detectors etc)

Other Thoughts: I will gladly buy more of these for other areas in my house.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Great Speakers. Got These for Christmas and installed them in the ceiling of a vaulted room. They sound great as my surround speakers. I have always been a big fan of polk and their performance. Also they weren't that difficult to install. the hardest part was running the cables (obviously).

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Would buy these again in a heart beat. Clean and out of the way (can't be touched by little fingers). Great sound quality and have received tons of complements on their look and sound.

2 out of 5 eggswhat was hype all about???

Pros: not sure

Cons: low frequencies are a joke, sounds too bright and metallic

Other Thoughts: I read all reviews and pulled the trigger,... hooked to hk 3490 120 wpc, cd player,... waht a dispaointment,..! let it paly for over 48 h, no improvement.
compared to speakercraft in wall , like lcr one or mt 6 II, was blown out of the water...

if you are serious about inwalls for your ht or auio sound, get real, buy a pair of speakercraft.
I love polk and have the rtia'7s from newegg, but for inwall i'll go speakercraft any day.

5 out of 5 eggsWinning

Pros: Great half off price. Great sound. What you can see looks great. What you can't see looks even better.

Cons: Nothing that careful installation can't cure.

Other Thoughts: My spouse said that she did not approve of buying these speakers. I mumbled something back and three days later I ordered them. When they arrived she had a small fit about me agreeing to not order them which must have referred to my mumbling. I patiently waited a few days until she was out of the house for a few hours before beginning installation that included some crawl space wiring. She returned sooner than expected and complained but had to admit they did look very good. The best part was when she heard the first song which was the 1982 Platinum-certified hit "Gloria". Her 67 year old body launched into a super active dance and she demanded even more wall shaking volume. I won. Actually we both won.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Sound

Pros: Easy to install. Nice sound

Cons: Shipped in retail box. Would not be able to gift to friend due to damage to outer box.

Other Thoughts: Do you research on how they measure speakers.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Speakers

Pros: This is a great speaker for background music. If you are forced to do in-wall or in-ceiling surround sound speakers, they are also a good choice. Wouldn't use as main front speakers if you want to crank it. I installed them in-ceiling as rear and surround speakers and built "boxes" into the floor joists which I think helped add some fullness and bass to their sound. Probably didn't need to, but I had time, access and ability. Easy to paint with the plastic cover they supply. Just put the cover on and spray paint away. Easy to mount and install, just be careful not to over tighten the tabs. They don't need to be super tight, just snug.

Cons: Not sure if it's a "con" or not, but I wouldn't use them as main front speakers if you are ever going to listen at loud volumes.

Other Thoughts: Can't beat them for the price!
