You're stuck: you want a surround-sound experience, but you don't have the room for a lot of speakers and you don't want to trip on the cables. (And we all know better than to run the cables under the carpet, right?)
Here's a home theatre sound system that rivals the multi-speaker systems without taking up the whole home. Polk Audio's SurroundBar speaker system effectively emulates the multi-speaker systems while delivering great sound. With an integrated DVD player and AM/FM receiver, this first component of your home theatre will get you off to a good start. The DVD player is capable of playing DVD, CD, MP3, JPEG, and Kodak photo disks, while the digital amplifier gives the speakers all the “oomph” they need.
Perfect for the person who wants to construct a custom system one or two modules at a time, the person on a budget, and the person with more dreams than room space to put them in. Check it out for yourself.

Steep price. Good Sound
- Pros: If you're looking for a sound system without the need for unsightly wires and confusing cables, this product is for you. I had a chance to hear it at a leading electronics store in a wide open space and was impressed with the quality of sound without being in a specially designed room. After doing a lot of research, I decided to buy it and consider it worth the money ($999). In no way does this replace a true 5.1 system and I'm sure that for the same price you could get a decent 5.1 audio setup. The soundbar does in fact do a good job of trying to mimic a 5.1 system. The sound does seem to wrap around you like Polk's website advertises. I've heard some people complaining about the bass, but I have a mid sized apartment and I think it's just fine for my needs. I liked the easy setup and straight forward instructions provided in the manual.
I recommend you go down to a local audio theater retailer and listen from roughly the same distance you'd have it at home.
- Cons: The only things I didn't like about the unit is that it has no HDMI inputs. There should have been HDMI input ports like the Sony Soundbar HT (which sells for much less, but seems to be average quality sounding) has three so you can plug your HDMI devices in to pass through the Soundbar. The next best connection is optical (one included). Make sure you have a couple of these for your game system, cablebox, blu-ray player or you can use RCA cables. Make sure your optical cables are not coiled or bent since it will lead to lagging or distorted audio.
