The Polk Audio RTI A1 bookshelf speaker proves that great style and performance can come in a small, affordable package. This exceptional speaker is the perfect step-up solution for a powerful full-range system that still has the benefits of a compact design. It offers a winning combination of powerful bass with remarkable detail and high volumes with low distortion, making it a perfect delivery source for today's advanced digital music formats.
Pros: Beautiful finish. Incredible midrange. Built in wall mount. The dual power ports really help to extend the bass of the 5.25" driver as low as possible. For most types of music (all but the most bass-heavy) they will do great. Jazz and most classic rock sound incredible when you look at their size and price. Excellent for rear HT surrounds.
Cons: The 5.25" driver is not intended to shake the foundations of your house. As stated above, it does do an admirable job. But, if you're thinking of using these in stereo for music, you're going to want at least a small sub to compliment. The tweeter can be fairly bright, but that's because it's the same tweeter they use all the way through their tower lines. Just a notch back on the treble will calm them down enough.
Other Thoughts: When I first got these, I really wasn't expecting much for straight musical listening. But, with a warm, smooth midrange, it almost makes you forget about the lack of low pounding bass. Still, if you're looking for a bookshelf for a music system, I would look a little larger, to the A3's. I'd imagine the extra surface area afforded by the 6.5" driver would help it get down a bit lower.
