The name “Monitor” is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging—all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series II is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish contemporary look, with vinyl veneer finishes, modern dark grey faces, and bold stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor40B boasts two 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers stiff with good damping for high efficiency, excellent bass and midrange clarity with lower distortion. And a 1-inch Fabric/Polymer Composite Dynamic Balance Dome Tweeter with powerful Neodymium magnet structure delivers clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments.
  • newegg Enhanced Features The Polk Audio Monitor40B features small-diameter driver design that delivers wide dispersion, better mid-range, and more detailed bass response for an open, “box-less,” three-dimensional sound. Non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with ¾"-thick baffles ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality. Crossovers use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies. Critically Tuned Flared Port minimizes port noise (“chuffing”) for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.
  • newegg Magnetically Shielded The magnetically-shielded Polk Audio Monitor40B can be put at any proximity to display devices such as TVs and LCD monitors without loss of sound quality caused by interference.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sound quality

Pros: Love these speakers. Sound quality is amazing. Couldn't ask for anything more

Cons: They are larger than i imagined them so check the dimensions for the shelf/stand/whatever you are trying to put them on.

5 out of 5 eggsSounds like you're there

Pros: Excellent value. Really no need for a sub with music. Sound clear and natural. Quality construction. Trust Polk to make quality products at a reasonable price.

Cons: Not a one.

Other Thoughts: I have these speakers connected to a small integrated amp and couldn't be happier. They fill our sunroom which is about 20 x 15ft with excellent sound. I wouldn't even think of adding a sub.

5 out of 5 eggslove them

Pros: I love these speakers. I bought them to be the fronts in my 12x13 mancave in my basement. They do the job with no problems. I just purchased the CS2 as my center speaker so I have a feeling I may use these as my rears and pick up some Monitor 70's or something next time I run into some cash. I currently have some old Bose bookshelf speakers as my rears and they do the job very adequately. I picked these up on sale for $119 with an extra 5% off and they are worth every penny.

Cons: They are a little big, but doesn't bother me at all. There are no true negatives.

Other Thoughts: If you need bookshelf speakers, you will not regret purchasing these. A wonderful value.

5 out of 5 eggsYou'll need a bigger bookself

Pros: I love the sound from these, it's great even though they're much smaller than speakers I'm usually using. I intend to use them eventually with an Onkyo TX-NR616 as the surrounds in a 7.1 system, but they are currently hooked up to some older Onkyo receiver and work just fine on that for my computer desk. I got them for $120, and they are easily worth it at that price.
The size must be the reason for their awesome sound, because they sound natural and pretty balanced.
They look GREAT, and only differ from their newer brothers (the 45Ts) in tweeter placement and a bit different aesthetics. (Something I'm not paying $60 extra for).
They can get quite loud and surprisingly have decent bass for their dual 5 1/4" woofers.

Cons: Not a con but big speakers, make sure you have room.

Other Thoughts: One thing to note before buying; THEY ARE BIG. NO BOOKSHELF is this big. They WILL NOT fit on many tables or bookshelves without a custom stand or mounting.
I can't wait to use them as surrounds.

5 out of 5 eggsBest speaker for money

Pros: Amazing bass.
Amazing lows and highs.
Beautiful and nice finish

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Let's just say that these are the best bang for the buck. First of all they are so beautiful and they add so much to your living room. The whole set is black and goes so beautiful with my pioneer VSX 8231 and large LED.

Now in terms of Tech these have probably the most optimized range for low and high. I listen to all sort of music so when I am looking for high frequency Oprah and spiritual music I have the tiniest bit there and while listening to instrumental Rock I have that big Bass and feel it with my whole body!

Let's just say that after a certain point of spending money your utility will not increase that much. So do not try to overkill your self. I mean after a certain point you will jut get more power not more quality and better sound range. Do not waste money on Klipsh or Bose or other expensive things just try to make a good combination with a nice receiver. (200 to 250 for a receiver and 100 to 150 for speaker unless you wanna add a sub). Don't waste money on surround and all that crazy stuff unless you are a killer movie watcher. Music is better with 2.1 anyway. These are all my opinions :D

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice speaker

Pros: Very impressed with this speaker, much higher quality than I expected. Looks and feels great, sound is excellent. Has perhaps a little too much Bass from my perspective, but I guess that is subjective.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsMonitor 40 series II

Pros: These sound amazing. I mean, are you kidding me? We have these plus a Polk Audio 10 inch subwoofer hooked up to an old reciever and a turntable. This is THE best I've ever heard these songs. These speakers just ooze quality also. The construction and weight of them inspires confidence.

Cons: Some people might have trouble fitting them on a bookshelf. We have them on top of the fridge, so no problem here.

Other Thoughts: I don't know why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for klipsch or bose speakers when these are around.
