5 out of 5 eggsVery nice computer speakers

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Nice midbass and highs. I'm using these as computer speakers in a 2.0 setup and they sound a lot clearer and better quality than my previous 4.1 Logitech setup.

Cons: Not the deepest bass, but paired with an amp they produce very nice midbass. You will probably need a subwoofer if you desire strong deep low bass

Other Thoughts: I'm using this as a computer speaker setup paired with a S.M.S.L SA-50 and they are perfect. I live in an apartment and can't use a subwoofer due to the close proximity of neighbors and I don't want to be a d.o.u.c.h.e who's loud bass annoys the hell out of my neighbors.

This setup produces nice clean bass. Movies, games, and web browsing all sound very clear and nice. The amp I am powering them with is very compact and is 50Wx2 channel RMS, which powers these nicely. If looking for an upgrade to any computer speaker setup, try the combo I listed out!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Speakers

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: They sound great for the price, not many speakers in the same price range will compare. I got these for $100 on open box. They were an absolute deal!!! There are two 5 1/4 speakers and a tweeter in each box. The boxes are in a nice black with some silver accents. The grilles are very sturdy and look nice. Can be used for bi-amping (if you are not bi-amping leave the little gold pieces installed)

Cons: They are very big in terms of depth, it's do to having 2 speakers though. May require the use of stands in certain applications.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to these from a pair of Boston Acoustics CR77s and am enjoying these way more then I ever enjoyed my old ones. I am running these in a 2.1 setup off of Yamaha RX-V1065 Receiver and is paired with a Bose Acoustimass 3 Series III Subwoofer.

5 out of 5 eggsPolk 40s

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: They sound really good got alot of power could be better i have a set of definitive technology studios that have better highs but the difference isn't that huge definitely the best in this price range

Cons: They are huge too big to put anywhere i had to weld up some custom stands and rearrange some furniture they are too deep not that tall or wide but makes it hard to mount them to anything.

Other Thoughts: Definitely the best or the dollar i would recommend polk in the future

5 out of 5 eggsGreat speakers for $119.99

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: They sound great for the money., and look to be well made. The sound is a little on the bright side, but not to the point of being annoying. I was using a pair of Pioneer 22 bookshelves, and I replaced them with these Polk's, and am pleased with my decision.

Cons: A little on the bright side, but as I said before this isn't really a con for me.

Other Thoughts: I don't believe Polks are the speaker they were in the 80's and 90's, but they aren't as expensive as they were back then either. For what you pay for them now they are a great value.

5 out of 5 eggsexceptional speakers

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: I am a studio and live sound engineer of 20 plus years and have installed countless high end systems in mansions. My ears have always been extremely pleased with polk audio for home. These don't disappoint, at all. Paired with a polk cs1 and polk psw505 sub, these kill. Dual drivers and a tweeter give huge sound, even on stands. There really isn't a valid reason to pay way more for floor standing speakers if you have a good sub, imo. They are big, but, i like that. Bigger boxes means fuller sound. It's just how acoustics work. Without the sub, they are great full range speakers and cover everything but the sub frequencies. Mid bass is strong. They have been discontinued by polk for some time, so, if you can find them, swipe them up. Little price for such a great sound. Don't be bothered with alleged audiophiles. I have been listening to details in professional audio for many years and these sound awesome. Sound is subjective to the listener. For my ear, these polks are awesome. As they have been for many years.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome! Helpful review for newcomers to audio

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: How they look- If your hiding these beauts behind the protective cover they include your missing out on their really professional and classy look. They are the type of speakers that will grab a friends attention as soon as they see them without having to be overly flashy which is something I personally really appreciate. Not much else to say about how they look except I guess they are pretty long and tall and since I don't see the dimensions specified here I'll tell you it is ABOUT 12inx7inx16in (LxWxH) Those are just a little bit over what they really are each but you should make sure you have at least that much room for wherever you are planing to place them

How They Sound- Like many others here have said, I am enjoying these speakers sound more and more as they continue to get broken in, they sounded a bit tingy at first but overall I think they are a blow your friends away type of speaker set and especially for the price i paid which is $119.99. Every time I have had someone new hear these beauts they always are blown away. I have indeed heard things in familiar songs and videos that I have never heard before which to me tell me that these are definitely doing their job VERY well.

Extras- *Allows you to remove the protective cover and see the beauts at work which I personally really like but some people wont care about at all, but If these are going to be placed around small children and animals I would definitely leave it on just in case!
*Allows for Bi-amping by including a second set of connections on the back. >>PLEASE READ<<- If you are not bi-amping you can use either of the 2 sets of connections on the back(Top or bottom) it does not matter, but do not remove the bridges(You only remove them for bi-amping)! This is another thing I wish was made more clear for me when buying.

Cons: Lack of in depth instructions for beginners

Other Thoughts: Things You Should Know- There are a few things I wish had been more clear to me when I was first buying components for a semi-pro audio setup so I figure I will tell you some of the things I learned along the way for the people who want to get great sound and are willing to spend a little extra. A great audio receiver is CRUCIAL! When I first hooked these up to my old adequate receiver I was not impressed, upon doing some research I found the receiver does truly make or break your speakers audio quality and in a haste I bought the Yamaha Rs201 Natural sound receiver($150) without even checking if it had a subwoofer output because I thought that was so standard I didn't even have to make sure of something like that. Of course I was wrong and when I got my hands on it I was massively disappointed although the overall sound quality was very much impressive. Some may say you could have hooked up the sub-woofer with Y adapters and while that is true I just didn't want to have to do something kind of ghetto like that for the price I was paying. Put on top of it that the Yamaha didn't have Banana plug usable connections and it had double the THD(Distortion) of the similarly priced receiver at the time the, Onkyo TX-8020($170) and I had to return it and buy the Onkyo. After all was said and done I am very happy with my current Setup which I will put all the components to right below. In conclusion, These are great sounding speakers when paired with other great components.

My Components (how much I paid)
* Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II speakers($130)
*Polk PSW10 Subwoofer($87)
*Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver($170)
*Mono price 50ft 16AWG high purity copper wire($18)
*Mono price Closed Screw Banana plugs 5 pair($10)
*Mediabridge Subwoofer Cable 8ft($15)
*Mediabridge 3.5mm to RCA step down cable 6ft($12)
*Furman PST-8D Power Conditioner and Surge Protector($100)
$542 Total. The power conditioner will ensure that your equipment is getting the cleanest AC current possible so it lasts longer and you may also notice a SLIGHT increase in sound quality. It will also protect your equipment from power surges which is extremely important.

5 out of 5 eggsfirst step to HiFi sound

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: These speakers are very clear in the midrange. The Monitor 40 is a bit lacking in the deep bass, but it is a bookshelf speaker (and a relatively inexpensive one at that). For what it is, I was actually quite impressed by the bass response. Support a pair of these with a decent subwoofer and you won't be disappointed. I have Polk Audio's PSW10 and it compliments the Monitor 40s very well. Have no problem at moderate listening volumes with Yamaha 2x100W amplifier($200 range). Very pleased with overall performance in a room 20x16 feet.
Don't be confused with its low price. This old model is out of production line for few years now, that explains very attractive price. Get them while the stock lasts.
These bookshelf speakers are a great value at the entry level of HiFi sound!
You would not be disapointed by its performance compare to mass production home sound appliences. Good quality for your living room with no drain in your budget!

Cons: don't expect same level performance as $700+. Other than that no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsPolk Audio Monitor40 Series II

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Fantastic sound quality! Very well built!

Cons: Not much of a con...They are somewhat large...more of a world atlas shelf speaker than a book shelf...

Other Thoughts: I am running an Onkyo TX-NR626 7.2 receiver, 2 Polk Monitor 70 series II for (fronts), a Polk CS2 series II (center) 2 Polk Monitor 40 series II for both (side surround) and (rear surround), and a Polk PSW 505 (sub).

So far I am very happy with this setup. I may need to upgrade the receiver to better power the Monitor 70s

4 out of 5 eggsPolk Audio Monitor40 Series II

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: These are great sounding speakers, I'm using them as my fronts with a sub woofer to replace some older Boston Acoustics and I'm very happy with them.

Cons: These speakers are pretty large, so I had to rearrange a few things to accommodate them.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent sound if used properly

This review is from: Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Black) Pair

Pros: Clean sound when driven from 50-80 watts/channel.
Good mid bass clarity

Cons: big
slight dip around 500-1000hz.
Bright highs ( fixed with Onkyo receiver by turning treble down 2 clicks)
Must be placed 1 ft from wall to reduce reverberation

Other Thoughts: I run these on stands as front speakers in a 5.1 system with a 2002 high end Onkyo receiver. I use a 8" powered sub set to 80 hertz and set the fronts as " big '.
I use the CS 1 dual 5.25 center speaker and some JBL 5.25 /1" dome as surrounds. For movies, music , and tv they sound pretty good after 100 hours break in. The trumpets in all Chicago songs sound great. I prefer my Sennheiser headphones for classical but these do ok. I have them spread 12ft wide in a 14 x 14 room. These are not not $1000 speakers so they are not great but they are very good for the money spent. I got them and the CS1 on sale with free shipping. I will be trying the crossover mod later on to warm up the highs and hopefully tighten up the bass a little. My amp is 40lbs and puts out 70 watts per channel. I would not drive these with less than 50 and they may wake up with 100-125. A cheap Sony/Pioneer/etc amp won't do these justice. They need a high currant amp. If your amp doesn't weight 30 lbs or more you are under driving these.( high currant amps have huge transformers ) My receiver was $1000 in 2002. You will still get sound but not sure if it will sound as good with a regular consumer receiver. My 30 watt/ch Rotel ( 30 lbs. ) also sounds pretty good at low to moderate levels. I use double 12 ga. speaker wire to these. I also found they sound better on a heavy stand at ear level 1 ft. away from any walls.
