The name “Monitor” is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging—all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series II is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish contemporary look, with vinyl veneer finishes, modern dark grey faces, and bold stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor40C boasts two 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers stiff with good damping for high efficiency, excellent bass and midrange clarity with lower distortion. And a 1-inch Fabric/Polymer Composite Dynamic Balance Dome Tweeter with powerful Neodymium magnet structure delivers clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments.
  • newegg Enhanced Features The Polk Audio Monitor40C features small-diameter driver design that delivers wide dispersion, better mid-range, and more detailed bass response for an open, “box-less,” three-dimensional sound. Non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with ¾"-thick baffles ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality. Crossovers use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies. Critically Tuned Flared Port minimizes port noise (“chuffing”) for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.
  • newegg Magnetically Shielded The magnetically-shielded Polk Audio Monitor40C can be put at any proximity to display devices such as TVs and LCD monitors without loss of sound quality caused by interference.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent surrounds - a bit big though

Pros: These sound beautiful and pair perfectly with my Monitor 70's and CS2. I used them as fronts in a bedroom system for a while and they worked well for that too. Just like the 70's they have a very open sound. These are an amazing value (much like the entire Monitor series).

Cons: They are on the large side - especially for surrounds. I have them sitting on stools but have seen a guy wall mount them before. That really is the only drawback to these. Was debating between these and the Monitor 30's that would be easier to mount - went with these.

Other Thoughts: Caught these on sale when they were about as much as the Monitor 30's (regular price) so I went with these. Was considering also the Monitor50's as surrounds - a bit overkill, but when you factor in the cost of stands for these it would have come out less. Ended up going with these. Great speakers. Serious bang for your buck. So glad Newegg continues to stock these (not sure how they are doing it considering the line is discontinued everywhere else). This line (Monitor) is the perfect entry into high end audio.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Rockin' Speakers!

Pros: Small, compact, and was able to ROCK out my living room with fabulous sound! I actually bought them thinking that these would be Rockin' speakers for my computer, WRONG. But, I'm glad I had them, and hooked them up to my stereo, and was utterly amazed on the sound and performance of these small babies!

Cons: Why didn't I use these earlier? None.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Speakers - Very Large

Pros: The monitor series always delivers great sound. These will deliver a decent amount of bass with very crisp highs. As with most of the monitor series they are a very bright speaker. Great value. Watch the sales here, I picked them up very cheap. I'm running Monitor 60's for my fronts and these are basically the Monitor 50's without the lower part of the tower. I'm using them as surrounds but they would make a great front speaker for someone that is short on space.

Cons: I'm listing these qualities as cons not because they are really all that negative, just simply because they are something that surprised me. These speakers are VERY heavy and they are VERY big for a bookshelf. I had trouble finding stands that would properly support them because I'm using them as a surround set. The rear port requires you to have ample space from the wall so wall mounting is not really possible without drilling into the cabinet and adding a bracket because there is no factory mount. The sound is amazing. These would be a great set of front speakers for someone that is short on space.

Other Thoughts: Perfect addition to my system and now it's finally complete.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value.

Pros: Smooth, brilliant, well balanced frequency response. Transparent highs and solid bass. Attractive cherry finish and solid, sturdy construction. Hard to imagine better value. I love tbem.

Cons: As otjers have noted, the bass won't rock tbe neighborhood, but it would be fine in many situations. I have mine backed up woth a subwoofe. Perfect.

Other Thoughts: Amazing free delivery. Arrived OVERNIGHT in less than 24 hours. Sturdy packaging.

4 out of 5 eggsPolk Monitor 40's good sound excellent price!!!

Pros: Excellent quality cabinet construction, average 5.25 inch drivers performance, excellent silk dome tweeter performance, crossover quality is good for this price point of speakers. The Polk Monitor 40's overall performance is excellent for the $129.00 price point I paid for them. These speakers excel in Jazz,Classical,Country, and Soft Rock.Blu Ray Master audio is amazing. These Polk's also image amazingly as in 2 channel stereo they sound as if they have a center channel on.They also are very sensitive input wise as my 80 watt per channel Pioneer receiver can get these speakers to db levels that hurt my ears without any noticable distortion.Amazing SPL in my oppion.

Cons: These speakers are not Cherry wood coloration but closer to a deeper natural wood.Polk rated these speakers to 47 Hz and for such a big box design I am a little disapponted they don't sound like they get that low even when I drop my receiver crossover point to 40Hz and set them to "LARGE".These 5.25 inch drivers lack "XMAX" as I notice very little cone movement even at high volume.Very pronounced sibilance for "S" in vocals.

Other Thoughts: Overall performance of these Polk Monitor 40's is very good for their price point. For Classical,Jazz,Country, and Soft Rock they sound absolutely amazing.I was a little disappointed in their performance for Rock Music,Pop,Rap,and Techno as they seem to fall on their face bass wise after about 80 Hz even when my receiver crossover was set to 40Hz and Large on the speaker size.I understand they are only 5.25 inch drivers but in a MTM design with such a large cabinet I would of expected better bass output.I own a Polk PSW 505 12 inch 300 watt RMS subwoofer and understand that 5.25 inch drivers don't produce low bass frequencies BUT in this (REAR PORTED) MTM design my expectation were higher for better bass performance.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing value

Pros: I've never seen a pair of speakers as good as these for the price they're going at. I have them hooked up to a Harman-Kardon 3390 (80w/channel) and they sound great. The mids lacked some presence out of the box but as the speakers were broken in they have become much more full, as has the low end, which is pretty impressive for speakers of this size. I live in an apartment so I haven't pushed them to very high volumes, but for low-mid to high-mid volumes they sing.

Cons: The very low end is weak, but you shouldn't be buying speakers of this size if "very low end" is what you are looking for. Or at least, you shouldn't expect these speakers alone to give you that low end. Paired with a sub, these would perform well for any type of music.

Other Thoughts: This is my first Polk purchase, and I am impressed. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up some higher-end Polk stuff in the future when I upgrade to floor standing speakers.

4 out of 5 eggsRear Surround Speaker

Pros: A nice choice for a rear surround speaker. The dual drivers make for an immersive sound. The cherry finish is slightly above average. A good sound response at low volume, doesn't lose the low-end or get pitchy; yet still delivers good clarity and the soft-dome tweeter does not outpace the other drivers at high volume.

Cons: The speaker grills are pretty flimsy, granted they have plenty of anchor points and are mounted well enough.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for what you pay for

Pros: Still breaking them in, so far liking what I hear.

Cons: Sound seems to be a little more directional than I would prefer, but I haven't experimented with different placements yet.

Other Thoughts: It amazes me the speakers you can get for the money these days compared to even 5-10 years ago, the dollar point for diminishing returns has dropped drastically!
