The name “Monitor” is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging—all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series II is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish contemporary look, with vinyl veneer finishes, modern dark grey faces, and bold stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

  • newegg Slim, High Efficiency Design The Polk Audio Monitor50B features a slim tower design with a footprint of less than one square foot to fit your flat-panel TV, plasma monitors and other thin-line home cinema components. High efficiency design allows the Monitor50B to reveal the classic Polk Audio sound (open, spacious and clear) even when driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers. Bold, fat stabilizer feet ensure stability on carpet or hard floors for more precise bass response and superior imaging.
  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Polk Audio Monitor50B boasts two 5.25" Bi-Laminate composite dynamic balance drivers stiff with good damping for high efficiency, excellent bass and midrange clarity with lower distortion. And a 1-inch Fabric/Polymer Composite Dynamic Balance Dome Tweeter with powerful Neodymium magnet structure delivers clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments.
  • newegg Enhanced Features The Polk Audio Monitor50B features small-diameter driver design that delivers wide dispersion, better mid-range, and more detailed bass response for an open, “box-less,” three-dimensional sound. Non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with ¾"-thick baffles ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality. Crossovers use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies. Critically Tuned Flared Port minimizes port noise (“chuffing”) for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.
  • newegg Magnetically Shielded The magnetically-shielded Polk Audio Monitor50B can be put at any proximity to display devices such as TVs and LCD monitors without loss of sound quality caused by interference.

5 out of 5 eggsPolk Monitor Series Loudspeakers

Pros: Being an over the top audiophile, I have spent far too much money on Jeff Rowland, Aerial, Wilson Audio, Mark Levinson, etc!! Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful equipment, however to enjoy audio, you just DON'T have to spend the big bucks, and I have spent the big bucks. I have a good friend that just wanted a modest audio system, smaller receiver and nice speakers. I went out on a limb and found two pair of Polk M-50, series II loudspeakers, not expecting much, and I was so surprised. Many people on this site talk about the M-60 and especially the M-70, both great speakers, but just not necessary, as all the M series are lacking in the very bottom end of the audio spectrum. So, what to do, DO WHAT I DID! Forget about the multiple drivers in the M-60 or M-70, unless you just want a larger speaker. I bought the M-50, with the smaller drivers, smaller footprint, and they can be bought for $75.00 to $120.00, a good deal in that range. The construction is wonderful, sure your not getting Sontos Rosewood, but who cares, we are saving money here, and the sound of the M-50 is wonderful, crisp, great high end extension, and I am comparing to aerial 10Ts, Aerial 20Ts, which I have both. YOU MUST, HOWEVER, HAVE A SUB WOOFER, YOU MUST, NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT, however, you have to have a good powered sub with the M-60 or M-70 as well, so why waste money on more low frequency drivers that just will not do what a quality sub will do. I use subs with my $8,000.00 speakers as well, so, whatever speaker you buy from $75.00 to $8,000.00, you just need a sub woofer to extend the low end. I took a $75.00 Polk M-50, coupled it with a good 250 watt powered sub woofer and the results are astounding. Here is another key factor many people are not addressing. With MANY people, like myself, storing music files on external 1-3 TB hard drives, in my case I-Tunes in the AIFF format, I downloaded Media Center Juke Box, and it's FREE, FREE, FREE, and has a wonderful equalizer and best of all, digital delay, and concert hall settings which can be very subtle or very pronounced, however you wish to set them. With careful listening and tweeking, I was totally and completely amazed at how I got a pair of Polk M-50 loudspeakers and a quality sub woofer to come reasonably close to systems costing thousands of dollars, so, in summary, download Media Center Jukebox, use the audio functions to your advantage, don't spend more money on one or two more low frequency drivers that STILL require a sub woofer anyway, get the Polk M-50s while you still can, buy your powered sub, tweek it with Media Center Juke box, and really enjoy the music! Cheers

Cons: There is just no down side to these speakers. For the price and above, you just won't do better. Some have mentioned the tap test. When you tap on these speakers with your knuckles, they are very solid, certainly better than anything I have seen at anywhere near the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for starting a home theater setup.

Pros: Not overly large, Nice styling, clean and smooth sound, very affordable when on sale (74.99)

Cons: A bit light on bass

Other Thoughts: These are great speakers for the money. Very nice starter set if you are just getting a home theater setup going. Good thing is if you decide to get the M60's or M70's later, you can always move the M50's to surround duty. These speakers have a very nice, clean sound to them. A little light on bass, but if you have a receiver with EQ capability for each channel, you can boost the bass up to a respectable level. Good looking speakers, not cheap looking and I like the feet on them. Would buy again and would recommend to anybody other than the audiophile snobs.

5 out of 5 eggsFOLLOW UP: "Extremely accurate..."

Pros: Previously stated.

Cons: Previously stated.

Other Thoughts: First let me start by saying every person is entitled to their onions, regardless of the misconception or lack of knowledge said onion is predicated on. I will, through this review dispel fallacious claims with direct and unquestionable fact.

Bass reproduction (or lack thereof) is not really a problem of these monitors as they were NEVER intended to produce “sub” or “bass” frequencies in the colloquial (musical) since. Bass or low frequency sound typically ranges from 20 to about 200 Hz. The predominate portion of “musical bass” or what most people idealize as “slamming bass” registers LOWER THAN 60 HZ.

Interestingly enough Polk Monitor 50’s lower frequency response begins to slope off at 59 Hz, as stated by John (a Polk audio representative.) Yes, the total frequency response is listed at 42-25,000 Hz, however we can't take these figures at face value because they tell a deceptive story to those who don't know how to accurately interpret these numbers. The lower (42 Hz) character does in fact refer to the lowest frequency capable of being produced by the drivers, however the internal crossover network (An electrical circuit used to split the signal into different frequency bands) effectively PROGRESSIVELY reduces the wattage disseminated to the drivers in said frequency range.

Optimal operating efficiency for these speakers is produced between 60 Hz and ~25,000 Hz.
NOTE: The ideal response of this speaker resides just above bass / sub or low level frequencies.
These speakers were NEVER designed to “pump bass.” On the contrary if these speakers delivered bass in those rages, it would more than likely compromise the ability of the drivers to remain linear and maintain accuracy.

The problem that some seem to have with the bass production of these speakers is in actuality their own IGNORANT EXPECTATIONS. Yes, they are WRONGFULLY expecting these drivers to produce “mega bass” when they were NOT designed to do so. Allow me to clarify; I am not calling a specific person or a group of people ignorant in general. I am however saying their lack of knowledge about this particular issue is abundantly clear and a hindrance to others when accepted as truth.
The bottom line is select speakers that are capable of achieving the goals which you seek. If you want ample bass choose to buy a subwoofer whose sole purpose it to produce bass, OR choose a speaker with built in proprietary bass drivers, Like the Monitor 70’s. Do some research before buying, and so us all a favor know the intended uses of a product before bashing it stupidly.

…you wouldn't buy a Porsche and then talk trash about its poor off-road performance.

5 out of 5 eggsStunning accuracy! Exceptional imaging!

Pros: Great acuity without being overly harsh or bright.
Solid dispersion of sound, while remaining clear and articulate at most distances.
The midrange and highs collaborate well with one anther crating seamless audio stage.
No " audio manipulation" required to create great sound out of the box.
They feel very solid and well constructed.

Overall another quality product from Polk.

Cons: At EXTREMELY HIGH volumes the tweeters seem to break away form the midrange creating an uneven or "bright" response.

They also seem to be relatively light for a polk product. Not really a con just a thought.

Other Thoughts: I LOVE Polk audio, I have owned a breadth of their products ranging form the CS350, RT800i's and even down to the R20 bookshelf speakers. These monitor 50's, for the price they are an unbeatable and unrivaled.

I worked tirelessly to find Polk towers on craigslist. Ive always found exceptional deals there and besides as soon as you take "new" speakers out of the box they immediately become "used," and are unavoidably devalued. I've always thought why pay the premium for "new" speakers, when you can NEVER have new speakers? (Using the principle as soon as new speakers come out of the factory packaging they become used)

However, for less than $160 INCLUDING SHIPPING to my door, these speakers are a greater value than anything I could find locally.

I'm pleased with my purchase and Newegg's service as always!

If the price is right, then these towers are a great deal and sound amazing!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat speakers!

Pros: Fantastic sound! Crystal-clear sound quality, and I can drive them loud & hard with no distortion whatsoever. Great product, espec. for the price I got them for ($80/ea. on special) - I bought a pair of course, and they are great.

Cons: the speakers are a bit wobbly; the stands for them could have been designed better.

Some say they could use a little more bass; I find that with certain music types/movies, that this is true (i.e., jazz), but when I am listening to rap/hip-hoip, it seems to be perfect; I would recommend getting a sub.

Other Thoughts: perfect front speakers for your audio set up, you won't be sorry. Just might want a sub, is all, but any true audio system would have a sub anyways. Great speakers, great price, and a great, trusted company. Awesome buy

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive quality

Pros: -Clear, crisp sound
-Impressive size and weight
-Great looking speakers

I won't pretend to be an audiophile, I've heard quite a few speakers, recently bought the Polk RM6750 set for my brother as a starter set, and decided to treat myself to these for my home theater. These are by far the best I have ever heard. They are crystal clear, powerful, and very sleek and attractive looking. Blend into the room nicely so the woman doesn't complain.

Cons: Not sure if it is these or the PSW10 sub causing the problem, but I tested these with some familiar music and found that certain notes just dropped off. I've played with crossover and other settings, nothing seems to grab them. Just seems to be a gap in the frequencies. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy either the monitor 60s or the PSW505 sub to try to fill in that gap. Just something to think about if you are buying these for music.

Other Thoughts: Got these on sale for 80 each, such a steal since you could easily spend that on satellite/bookshelf speakers when you factor in the cost of a stand. I'd give these a 5 for home theater, and a 4 for music.

Newegg got these here the next day yet again, ridiculous. It's like someone at the warehouse starts running the second they see your order placed, puts it in his van and speeds to your local UPS facility.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value on Great Speakers!

Pros: These speakers are relatively heavy, which means Polk didn't skimp on quality components in order to save on freight costs. They sound terrific by themselves, but I also bought a set of the matching smaller bookshelf sized Monitor40 series. As rear channel speakers this system is very very nice at a very very surprising price.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy the matching Polk audio subwoofer, as I already had a nice Sony sub. I love the sound of these speakers with, or without the sub. I usually turn off the sub when listening to music and regular movies, only use it for action movies.
