The name "Monitor" adorned the speakers that first made Polk famous. Monitor means simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging (all at a surprising price). This new Monitor is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers, and they are voice-matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish look that complements today's flat screen technology, with wood grain finishes and modern Titanium faces. Built for sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

The Polk Audio Monitor 55T is two-way ported floorstanding loudspeaker that delivers unprecedented performance with unforgettable style at unbeatable price. Its high efficiency design allows the speaker to reveal the classic Polk sound (open, spacious and clear) even when driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers. This compact floorstanding model deals out the high performance audio in a smaller space, without sacrificing dynamics or soundstaging.

5 out of 5 eggsI love these bad boys

Pros: The frequency response is great and very flat. Music is crystal clear! I love it. They outperform my subwoofer. I'm going to have to upgrade it.

Cons: I need a better subwoofer.

Other Thoughts: The price I got it at make it very worth it. I wouldn't buy at the current price of $159. Nope. You can find better for this price.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Entry Speaker

Pros: Great tweeter, very clear vocals, good sound with some tweaking, good for small rooms, price

Cons: The frequency response is not flat at all, requires tweaking to get a good sound, power hungry, not good for large rooms

Other Thoughts: I was in the market for a used pair of PSBs or similar for my office, but jumped on these the other day ($49 after rebate) as the price was too good to pass. I first set them up in my living room and swapped out my Paradigm mains to compare (I know not a fair comparison), but I couldn't get a good sound from them. I have a large room, tiled floor with carpet rug and wall sound treatments. The speakers sounded very small, clear vocals but no depth. I was a little disappointed at first. Then moved upstairs to my office (10x12 carpeted room) and set them up with an older Onkyo receiver and my PC via optical cable. Ok, speakers sounded a lot better up here but still not quite right. After fiddling a bit with the Windows Media Player equalizer they started sounding really nice. I gave them some boost at 62Hz and 125Hz, and brought them down at 250Hz and 500Hz. This made a dramatic difference and I am very happy. This is not possible on a typical receiver so I would not have been very happy with these speakers in a living room situation. I also do not recommend them for larger rooms, even with my sub they had no presence. Again I am accustomed to Paradigm Monitor 11s so if I had no basis for comparison or was coming from a HTIB setup I may have felt differently. But for the price I really can't complain, I am very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsWow. Press 'Buy'. Do It Now!

Pros: Inexpensive
Immaculate sound reproduction
Startlingly powerful bass response for 5" drivers
Very nice build quality - They look great with or without the grilles.

Cons: very tall - must be floorstanding; don't buy these thinking you can fit them on a desk. If you place them on carpeting, they may lean to one side if next to a heavy object like an entertainment center.

Other Thoughts: As a bit of an audiophile, I am severely underwhelmed by almost every soundsystem I come across, mainly because they aren't my nice studio headphones.
That was before I sat, enamored, in front of a pair of these beauties. Hooked up to a relatively basic 135w Sony amp, these monitors (yes, they are deserving of the title) produce a level of sound quality that will send shock and awe through all in the vicinity. Bystanders will be remiss to believe that the sound filling the room is coming from those inconspicuous looking 5" drivers. "Where's the sub?" they may ask, as these are quite capable of physically vibrating the floor. Not bad for 5". Not only is bass present, but it's accurate as well. These speakers won't replace a dedicated high-quality sub, but they certainly go a long way.
The biggest draw is the immaculate sound quality. Sound is crisp and deep, vocals are clear and lifelike, and volume gets quite loud without any noticeable distortion. A super-audiophile would need to tweak these to remove certain biases, but I'm not that extreme. They sound fantastic right out of the box, and I'm perfectly happy with that.
Final notes: I paid $69/speaker. I would have been more than satisfied had I paid $250/speaker.
That being said, these won't replace your $2000/speaker studio monitors. But then again, who's expecting them to?
I only wish I had bought 4.

4 out of 5 eggsGood speakers for the price

Pros: Nice design. Fit nicely in the space where I wanted to place them. Great sound.

Cons: Bright out of the box. Took a bit of time to break. Sound really clean now.

Other Thoughts: 1 arrived with a broken speaker grill.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: For the price, these Polks are pretty solid speakers to have. Highs are crisp, mids are clear (could be a bit warmer) and the lows are sufficient.

When powered by my Onkyo A-9050, these speakers shine.

Cons: What's lacking is low-end. If you want clear low frequencies, I would suggest pairing these with a sub.

3 out of 5 eggsThey are okay I guess...

Pros: The volume is okay for most of my needs and I think they look great. Polk has absolutely fantastic cust service. The sound is nice and bright. Great for music.

Cons: They have very little bass / low end. I have these hooked up with a 12" sub-woofer, and I still don't think these have enough bass because it's not the full sound spectrum one should expect from a tower speaker. They do get loud enough for my needs, but actually not as loud as I would have expected them to. I am pushing them @ 100 Watts per, so I guess if I gave them more power I would get more out of them.

Other Thoughts: I got these on sale for $70 each here at Newegg. They are not bad for the price. Overall, I wish I had purchased a larger set (like the Klipsh F-20's that went on sale for $90 the day after I purchased these) for those times when I want the movie really loud, and I know they put out a "fuller" sound. I have these as my front L / R. They would be perfect for the rear speakers if that is what you are looking for.
Of note: One grill was slightly cracked; I called Polk, they shipped me a new one right away, and included another one for backup (they retail for $35 ea). That's 2 new grills at no cost. Right on Polk!

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!!!

Pros: Sound Great!
Sound like a 3-way speaker, although their only 2-way!
Slim Design

Cons: Cracks at high volumes.

Other Thoughts: I used to be a DJ, and let me tell you; i have heard some of the best sound systems available. Eveything From Jbl, Turbo sound, EAW. These speakers are the best bang for your buck when it comes to home setups! I'm amazed at the sound reproduction these speakers give out. BUY THEM! You won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

Pros: Sound, build quality, size, sturdiness

Cons: Low end response

Other Thoughts: I bought these to replace some cheap bookshelf speakers and a 10 inch powered sub. They take up less space, require less wiring, are more stable than bookshelf speakers on stands, and are a more elegant solution. While they don't have the punch of a 10 inch powered sub, the sound is overall more accurate and natural, and there's no chuffing or interference like I experienced with the sub. I'm very happy with these speakers for the price!
