Definitive Technology Bipolar Floor-Standing Speaker

Definitive Technology's BP8 is a revolutionary audiophile-engineered, designer-styled loudspeaker intended for musical reproduction and home theater systems of the highest quality. This full-range bipolar (front and rear) radiating system combines the lush spacious soundstaging, lifelike depth-of-field, razor-sharp resolution and pinpoint imaging of the finest dipolar panel loudspeakers with the extended bass response, high-efficiency, wide dynamic range and easy-to-position convenience of the best conventional box systems.

  • Bipolar technology (speakers on front and back of enclosure) for huge room-filling sound for every listener in the room
  • Two High-Definition drivers with cast Magnesium baskets
  • Two Annealed Pure Aluminum dome tweeters
  • Slim Designer enclosure takes up less than one square foot of floor space

Audiophile Performance, Designer Styling, and Unmatched Value

The goal of the Definitive design team was to create state-of-the-art loudspeakers which offered unsurpassed sophisticated technology and lifelike musical and cinematic reproduction combined in sleek and stylish designs which could be easily and attractively placed in your home. Their success in achieving these goals is immediately apparent when you listen to your favorite music or movie through Definitive speakers. The elegant slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers from left to right, and exhibits front to back depth which, at times, can be almost startling in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action being performed in your room (which will seem to be almost magically expanded in size).

Thousands of man-hours of critical listening and design processes utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available along with fundamental research at the NRC (the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility) have combined to produce loudspeakers like no other in the world. The spectacular three-dimensional imaging, awesome deep bass response and silky smooth high definition linearity of the Definitive Technology BP8B are the result of a myriad of technological advancements and breakthroughs (including the latest state-of-the-art components and technology developed for Definitive's flagship BP7000 Series loudspeakers) which have been combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home. They truly recreate reality that totally suspends disbelief.

The Sonic Superiority of Definitive's Bipolar Loudspeakers

Many experts and in-the-know listeners agree that bipolar speakers are absolutely superior for both music and home theater. Each speaker

Definitive Technology

Incorporates two complete sets of drivers, one facing forward and the other facing to the rear. Thus Definitives speakers radiate the full sonic spectrum both forward and rearward in an omni-directional pattern, exactly as sound is produced in real life.

The sonic benefits you hear are dramatic! This unique technology provides you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival sound information, which provides focus, clarity and location data, and properly delayed late-arrival information, which conveys the lush three-dimensional soundstage of a live music or cinematic performance. This combination creates a huge soundfield which is rich, warm, ultra clear and vibrantly alive. Bipolar technology assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener wherever they are in the room. Most importantly, however, Definitive's bipolar speakers make the walls of your room seem to disappear and, in effect, expand the size of your room into the sound space of the recoded event your system is reproducing. They will literally bring your music and movies to life in your home. One listen and you can never go back to conventional speakers again!

Movies and music are reproduced with unequaled purity, transparency and lifelike realism. These elegant, slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers with front to back depth which can be almost magical in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action actually being performed in your room. This combination of high resolution, magnificent sound-staging awesome bass and explosive impact literally envelops you in what is absolutely the ultimate listening experience.

Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinets

The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the BP8B reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock."

In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam dampening pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by our high definition drivers. The BP8B also includes an additional divider/brace panel separating the front and rear drivers.

Multiple High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers

The BP8B utilizes two high definition cast basket bass/midrange drivers (the same as used in Definitive's flagship BP7000 Series) for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. These sophisticated bass/midrange drivers incorporate deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cones, combined with butyl rubber surrounds and dustcaps, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.

Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters

The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the top-of-the-line BP7000 Series are used in the BP8B. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.

Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks

The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the BP8B equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

Easily Positioned for Superior Sound Throughout Your Room for Every Listener

BP8Bs are engineered to be easy to position (just 4" to 24" out from the wall) in any listening room or home theater installation in order to achieve superb sonic reproduction throughout your room. In addition, a major benefit of the special driver topology is wide dispersion, which assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener in the room.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent sound.

Pros: Excellent sound, great 2.0 setup. Perfect choice for Stereo set up.. Clean sound, no distortion.

Cons: Not too sensitive, requires clean strong power to make them shine.

Other Thoughts: I have them palced 1 foot from the wall, 2.0 set up, no subwoofer
Sources is Pandora streamed via a Heos by Dennon link, preamplifier via a DAC Emotiva XDA-1---> Amplifier: Emotiva UPA-2:120 wpc at 8 Ohms.

Those babies can sing and go loud w/o distortion. I have a pair of Def. Techs BP7006 with the powered subwoofers, and In all honesty I like the way this baby sound better. Bass is great even w/o a sub.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Sound

Pros: These things sound exceptional. The speaker configuration literally fills my living room with sound and I find myself quite often looking for where a sound came from in the house only to realize it was in the movie and the speakers directed it giving a positional effect.

Another major benefit is that the sound is so crisp and clear that the volume can actually be fairly low, yet still be very easy to hear.

The deal NewEgg offered on them was stellar as well. While these won't be my main front speakers for long (I will be getting a set of Definitive Technology BP Super Towers), they have more than adequately filled the role for the last 8 months. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Cons: The top cap on one of the speakers has a slight bow in it which can be a minor visual annoyance, but then again, I didn't buy these speakers to look at them.

Other Thoughts: I can't wait until I get the BP Super Towers with the powered subs. The combination of the two sets of speakers are going to just blow me away. I will have to pry myself out from in front of the action movies and video games.

5 out of 5 eggsBP8B

Pros: Looking to replace an aging speaker system, came across these on the Egg for 199 each.. So i bought 2. liked them so much i bought 3 Mythos Two's to complete my 5.2 setup. I have never heard music or movies sound so good. The detail is incredible, precise and accurate. Paired with Def Tech. Pro 1000 and acoustech PL-200 subs, Its all real good.

Cons: None what so ever.

Other Thoughts: Better get them while they last, If I could talk my wife into it, I would be the proud owner of 2 more for a 7.2 setup!

5 out of 5 eggsFine-sounding Speakers

Pros: Plenty of detail without harshness
Enough bass for most music (needs a sub for home theater)
Spacious and room-filling, if the room's not too big
Overall smooth, accurate, neutral sound
Fairly efficient, not power-hungry

Cons: Shouldn't be placed near walls; bass extension is more like a good bookshelf speaker than a floorstander

Other Thoughts: At their NewEgg sale price, "bargain" doesn't begin to describe the BP8b. Utilizing two of the same bass/mid drivers and two of the same tweeters as found in Definitive's legendary BP7000 (#19 on Audiophile Review's "Top 25 Audiophile Speakers of All Time" list), this technology may be a few years old but it's still totally competitive. After all, speakers haven't changed all that much.

By themselves, these speakers are like really good bookshelf speakers mounted on stands, with the added dimension of the bipolar design's spacious imaging plus the more robust dynamics afforded by a larger cabinet. Don't expect useful bass below 40Hz, and don't expect to fill very large rooms. But if you're looking to pay under four bills for your mains in an HT system where the seats are within 10-12 feet of the screen, or you are building a music-only stereo system, wait for a sale and grab a pair of these.

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid buying

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Weak output, a reason why they were discontinued, even sounds bad with a powered subwoofer. So inconvenient to have to plug the speaker wires into the bottom.

Other Thoughts: Just got the speakers today. One worked and the other didn't. One of the reviewers said they had to do some wiring to fix theirs. I was not prepared to do that but I couldn't beat the price. Since one was defective, I was only able to test one of them. From what I heard I was not impressed. These were meant to replace my Polk RT2000Ps. Not even able to compare. I thought the whole bidirectional polar thing was supposed to wow me. Instead, I heard a tiny little speaker trying its best to put sound out. I figure since I had to return the defective one I might as well return the other one and ask for a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsDef Tech BP8B

Pros: Crystal clear highs with adequate lows,5yr warranty and at 199.00 a piece, I had to have a set,They sound Fantastic right out of the box,Def Tech says 20-40 hrs break in and at the 10 hr mark,I could hear a difference,A more enveloping soundfield,These are wonderful speakers.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have these up front,A CS8040HD center,Mythos Gems for rear surrounds and a Yamaha YSW216 sub, wired to a Yamaha RX-V375, Speakers are set to small and crossed over @80, with the sub gain @ 50% in a 14x16x8 ft room and it sounds great for HT,I have heard better for music but not for the money.
