The widely imitated Mythos Series literally redefined the concept of floor-standing loudspeaker from big dark box to thin and sexy gleaming showoff when it was introduced. It is the perfect floor-standing complement to your wall mounted or table mounted flat screen television.

These tower loudspeakers combine the elegant look of curved, hand-polished aircraft-grade Aluminum with state-of-the-art engineering technology that delivers the classic level of Definitive Technology sound quality: wide, dynamic soundstage, pinpoint imaging, and superb realism. Packed into these thin towers are proprietary damping technologies that ensure total rigidity, D'Appolito Driver Arrays in narrow PolyStone baffles (voice-matched with whole Mythos line for easy mix-and-match system building), Definitive's exclusive Planar Technology Pressure Driven Bass Radiators to enhance low frequency response, and sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks to more perfectly blend the drivers into a sonically seamless audio environment.

Mythos Four Tower Loudspeakers rise dramatically from Tempered Glass Bases that include carpet spikes and rubber feet for stability on any type of floor surface. Nothing complements your new high definition flat screen television with more style, versatility and sheer performance than the beautiful Mythos Series models.

  • newegg Superior Quality Components Each Mythos Four contains a D’Appolito array consisting of two high-definition 4-1/2 inch midrange drivers surrounding a 1 inch dome tweeter housed in a sealed enclosure. The drivers feature die cast Aluminum baskets, mono-polymer cones and Finite Element Analysis optimized magnet structures for clear low distortion life-like sound. The drivers are pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2 inch planar Low-Bass Radiators for a total bass radiating surface greater than that of a single 8 inch conventional woofer. The result is exceptional bass extension and power not normally found in slim on-wall loudspeakers. The bass roll-off of the Mythos Four is smooth and controlled, allowing it to seamlessly blend with a powered subwoofer, such as Definitive’s SuperCubes, for audiophile-grade home theater power and precision. And the array’s 1 inch Pure Aluminum dome tweeter produces extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess.
  • newegg Rock-Solid Enclosure Mythos Series enclosures are hand-polished gloss Black aircraft-grade extruded aluminum with proprietary damping technologies that ensure total rigidity. All components are mounted on a resonance-free PolyStone baffle. These rock-solid construction technologies along with state-of-the-art drivers and tweeter serve to deliver classic Definitive Technology sound quality: wide soundstage, pinpoint imaging, high dynamic impact, and superb realism.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Speaker, Overpriced

Pros: Wife will accept them if real speakers are a problem.

Cons: No real bass, has to be part of a HT or with a sub. Overpriced.

Other Thoughts: I bought these on sale and got a great price. At this price point I would recommend a wait and see or buy better. This is not a technical review but just a plain old sandwich one for the common man as I’m sure you can find tech reviews all over the place on it. Only an opinion on having them.
Now I bought them for two reasons. (1.) I have heard the BP700SC and they are superior quality full range speakers deserved of one of the best all time speakers. Why they can't match this technology into the rest I am not sure. The sock though has to go. If you fall for the sock makes the sound then…ok….He has a new company bloating the sock and another overpriced speaker line. (2.) Price, at what I paid for them they could always serve as rear speakers in a surround system. They are a great rear speaker in any HT system and I’ll keep them for that alone.
I want to love Def Tech and just keep getting disappointed. For a mid to high priced speaker you just can get better than the Mythos Four, I’m sorry. At original MSRP I wouldn't touch it with a 30 foot pole. Without a subwoofer this speaker lacks the price tag it wants now reduced so if you are looking for a 2.0 system, look elsewhere. Sandy Gross has moved on to start a new sock covered speaker company (Golden Ear) which is another overpriced speaker. He was in his realm with Polk as it can be had cheap for the pocket that can't afford more. Nothing wrong for that as you can get decent Polks cheap and they serve the purpose for some people. No the sock is not the secret answer to great sound and also being ugly in my humble opinion and a dust magnet, you should get a lifetime supply of socks to recover them. Nothing against him as he is phenomenally successful and does nice work. I just don’t hear the sock miracle.
Exibit A: Now I picked up ML Motion 12's for under $500 also and that is the price range these deserve. The ML 12's while only claiming 38Hz will go lower than these which claim a 35Hz level and deliver a fuller sound while softer on the upper end. Measured multiple times and varied rooms after my ears alone told me so. The MLs will take all the power these give you also. Now the Motion 12’s us an open baffle on top for the midrange which intrigued me as I have a pair of Legacy Areis which do the same on a whole different sound plane all together. Now having speaker cover over this make sense and it is only over the part that is open. This is just a one quick comparison right here on brand mentality. Big sound doesn’t come from a small box, even Bose has walked back their claims and now promote “for the size”. I’m not selling ML’s 12’s, just a comparison for this.
While the D'Appolito Driver Arrays are fantastic it is not a $800 a speaker much less a $400 a speaker. The highs are great, it's clear but hitting high 30s Hz leaves a lot out also in such a limited space. You need the power built in to drive smaller speaker boxes as why they have moved to the super towers. Again, wayyyy overpric

5 out of 5 eggsCrystal clear

Pros: I bought 2 of these for my front speakers in my 7.1 setup and they instantly made my system clearer. I then added mythos twos to the rear of my setup, even more clear. I am totally sold on Def Tech prooducts, you got me

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsHome Theater Nirvana

Pros: These Def Tech Mythos 4 towers are my left/right speakers in a 5.1 home theater setup, with a Mythos 3 center, Mythos Gem surrounds, and a SuperCube subwoofer. All but the Gems were purchased brand new from NewEgg at OUTSTANDING prices and arrived in perfect condition. The system has exceptional clarity and dynamic range, and I can't imagine a better home theater speaker system for the (modest) price.

Cons: Modern tempered glass pedestal stands and gorgeous brushed aluminum towers look slightly out of place in a 185-year old Vermont farmhouse....

Other Thoughts: My reference stereo system includes KEF 104.2 speakers powered by Adcom / Meridian. Classic, full range reference speakers and worth every penny. The Def Techs are brighter, but not annoyingly so, and only go as low due to the presence of the SuperCube sub. Without the sub, the Mythos 4 towers would lack that lowest octave(s) of audio. Still, for the intended purpose, the Def Tech speakers are perfect, and I prefer them to the KEFs in a home theater environment. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsTower Speakers

Pros: I received the speakers within 3 days. I hooked them up and they worked great. I was amazed at the sound including bass that came from these thin towere speakers. The small manual was very helpful in the setup process

Cons: I had to put in the pins on the bottom of the stand to get them off the carpet which caused muting of the sound. This was mentioned in the manual

Other Thoughts: I encourage you to consider these speakers for a stereo or surround system.
