Definitive's StudioMonitor 350 is a compact high-performance, magnetically shielded full-range bookshelf speaker. But don’t let its small size fool you—thanks to its 8 inch pressure-coupled Low Bass radiator it belts out the bass depth and punch of a floor-standing loudspeaker. Its non-resonant monocoque cabinets feature Definitive's elegant piano-gloss black lacquer end cap/wraparound grille cloth styling.

The StudioMonitor 350's sonic performance is truly stunning, producing huge razor-sharp, three-dimensional sonic images combined with incredible detail, ruler-flat frequency response and rich, full bass. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency response they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers and when combined with separate subwoofers.

  • newegg Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the StudioMonitors reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock." In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam damping pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers.
  • newegg High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers The StudioMonitor 350 utilizes a 5-1/4 inch high definition cast basket bass/midrange driver for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. This sophisticated bass/midrange driver incorporates deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone, combined with butyl rubber surround and dust-cap, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.
  • newegg Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the BP7000 Series are used in the StudioMonitor 350. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.
  • newegg Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the SM350 equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

2 out of 5 eggsNot So Good

Pros: Deep bass.

Cons: The tweeters are on the shrilling side and the mid range is really weak. High listening fatigue.

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to like these speakers, but after using them for about 6 months I decided to box them up and put them in storage. I recently gave them another try and the sound is just too piercing, especially at higher volumes. They are okay for movie surround sound, but for music they are very harsh and are tiresome to the ear. I don't understand how they continually get very high reviews. These people must use them mainly for movies. I would not pay more than $200 for these, and there are much better sounding speakers for less money out there.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesomeness is a small package

Pros: Incredible sound for the small size.
Can handle more power than I need it to.
5 way binding posts are awesome.
Great soundstage projection.

Cons: Bass might be weak for some people, but it's good enough for me.

Other Thoughts: There really isn't anything I thought was particularly bad about these speakers. Sure the bass isn't that punchy, but I'm finding that I like the well defined bass over the boomy and muddy bass I got from my old Bose 4001 series speakers. Mids are also much clearer.

For music it's great as is, but maybe for movies, an added subwoofer would be better.

I thought the mesh all around the cabinet was an interesting aesthetic choice. Might be good or bad depending on your personal tastes.

I found these better with the speakers pointing towards me than letting them diffuse sound throughout my room.

5 out of 5 eggsSmokin' monitors

Pros: Very nice imaging. Huge soundstage. Cover the lower octaves as well as one can expect from a monitor this size. Better than anything near this price point. If you want better performance (other than the SM450) expect to pay $2000+. Handle tremendous amounts of power. I pushed a Crown Power Base 2 into clipping and the SM350's handled all 460 wpc without issues. I don't recommend this as any damage will not be covered under warranty. I was using a compressor to make sure that peaks didn't occur. Don't judge them until they have had at least 40 hours of break in. Great speakers. They had an unbelievable sale on them so I bought 5 pairs.

Cons: They sound thin before they're broken in. Bass extension is not up to the specs. It gets better as they approach 100 hours of use. Significantly.

Other Thoughts: Wait for a sale. They're worth full price but I bought 5 pairs at $179 from Newegg. They arrived in less than 24 hours.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesom

Pros: Small, looks good, Sounds great.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have NHT SuperZeros and Polk Monitor 30 II's. The Def Techs sound WAY better than either. I use them on my desk with an old Sony ES receiver. Sound stage is way better defined with the DefTechs. I paid one eighty with a fifty rebate, so awesome price.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Great set of bookshelf speakers for the rear or even for the front. I have these hooked up to my laptop which is connect via DAC to my receiver. There is a 20-40 hour break in period, but even then they sound amazing right out of the box. They are very clear, high's are crisp and not overpowering and just the right amount of bass.

Cons: None at the moment.

Other Thoughts: Easy to mount on to the wall, they actually come with two brackets and screws if you want to mount them to your wall! A huge plus!

5 out of 5 eggsYou Can't Beat the Preformance

Pros: Rich sound output. The speakers will only output what you input so inferior equipment and content will result in inferior sound. If you have quality equipment and the content is is high quality you will love these speakers. Take the time to configure you system and allow for a break in period and you will not be disappointed. With or without a sub they sound good. Of course a sub will add to your listening pleasure but it is not a must!

Cons: I got these for a great price, thanks newegg, but shortly after I had the they went on sale for an even better price. Wish there was a 30 day price guarantee like some other online retailers.

Other Thoughts: Anyway, I am extremely happy with my purchase and I can't complain about the price. They are a discontinued produce from Definitive Technology but does great sound ever become obsolete?

A happy customer!

4 out of 5 eggsWell worth the price

Pros: Very high sound quality.
Low price
Good build quality.
Everything that I have come to expect from Definitive Tech.

Cons: You really need to pair these speakers with a proper subwoofer for full effect. The 8 inch passive woofer, while descent, doesn't really have the ability to produce the gut wrenching lows you would expect in movies.
