Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 450 Bookshelf/Stand Mount Speaker Pair (Black)

StudioMonitor 450

  • High-Definition 6.5-inch bass/midrange driver with cast Magnesium basket
  • Annealed Pure Aluminum 1-inch dome tweeter
  • Pressure coupled 10-inch Low Bass radiator for outstanding bass response
  • High gloss black lacquer end caps
  • Available only as a matched pair

Definitive's StudioMonitor 450 is a compact high-performance, magnetically shielded full-range bookshelf speaker. But don't let its small size fool you - thanks to its 10-inch pressure-coupled Low Bass radiator it belts out the bass depth and punch of a floor-standing loudspeaker. Its non-resonant monocoque cabinets feature Definitive's elegant piano-gloss black lacquer endcap/wrap-around grille cloth styling.

The StudioMonitor 450's sonic performance is truly stunning, producing huge razor-sharp, three-dimensional sonic images combined with incredible detail, ruler-flat frequency response and rich, full bass. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency response they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers and when combined with separate subwoofers.

Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet

The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the StudioMonitors reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock."

In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam damping pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers.

High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers

The StudioMonitor 450 utilizes a 6.5-inch high definition cast basket bass/midrange driver for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. This sophisticated bass/midrange driver incorporates deeply drawn mineral-filled homopolymer cones, combined with butyl rubber surrounds and dustcaps, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.

Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters

The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the BP7000 Series are used in the StudioMonitor 450. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.

Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks

The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the SM450 equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

5 out of 5 eggsWell Suited For A Small Room

Pros: Paired the Def Tec 450s with Integra 40.4 Stereo receiver (and, no, Onkyo and Integra are not the same; Integra is made with better quality components - notably upgraded capacitors).
Back to the 450s: As noted almost ubiquitously, the 450s lean toward being bright - but it is slight. And they clearly need broken-in over a long period - as is normal. The response has flattened considerably in just two weeks and in a few months of daily use they should produce sound comparable to much more expensive units.
Already, the imaging is just plain - impressive!
Vocal quavers I never noticed before, are revealed plainly. String resonances are longer and fuller.
The 10" passive side radiator is matched well to the drivers. Def Tec must have spent a great deal of time getting this right, and, in a small room there is no need at all for a subwoofer.
We like our music quiet. And so these are rarely receive more than 1/6th of the Integra's available 100 watts (set at 6Ω as per Def Tec specs) - thus, the 450s are excellent low volume speakers.

Cons: The 450s sound vaguely muddy; mostly a break-in deficiency.

Other Thoughts: They are mounted in an unusual way;
The shelf holding the components is above the TV, near the ceiling. A painted length of angle iron is mounted beneath the shelf - 'V' up. The front edge of the speakers balance on a soft strip on velcro in the 'V', angled about 30º downward. The back is stabilized with Snaptoggles in the wall, into which are short lengths of threaded rod with locknuts at each end.
Very sturdy, and they look like they're floating!

5 out of 5 eggsgreat speakers with enough power

Pros: really nice sound stage and coverage of the spectrum.
took quite a while to open up though, so give them some time to break in (like several months with infrequent use) before you judge them. So it took some time, which you could speed up if you used them more than I do. But now they sound fantastic. I have a 100w per channel carver amp and these sound very good so I think they need some power to sound their best.

Cons: the woofer does not have the phase plug that the more expensive models do. but the sound is still very detailed and rich.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat bookshelf speakers!

Pros: Well built MDF cabinets that are sealed and not ported!

Very well built 6 1/2" mid-bass driver with real rubber surround. A 10" passive radiator that really helps with the overall bass response. A high end 1" aluminum dome tweeter that's been annealed for a less bright sound.

Fantastic soundstage and imaging!

Some of the best looking speakers I have ever owned with the main sock speaker grill and the two 1 14" piano black end caps.

Customer service that's second to none!

I had a bad 6 1/2" driver in one of the two pairs I bought and Definitive sent out 2 new 6 1/2" drivers, 2 new 1" dome tweeters and two new 10" passive radiators with basically no questions asked!

Cons: This is really not a con since it can be corrected but these speakers are a little bit on the bright side.

People with really good hearing will notice this. Older people with some high end sound loss will not!

Other Thoughts: These are by far the best sounding speakers I have ever owned in the bookshelf realm.

The sound stage and imaging that these speakers provide is just outstanding.

The 20 LB weight of each speaker stunned me when I first picked one up!

Match these up with the Definitive C/L/R 2002 or the new HD 8040 center for a great timber matched sound.

I bought two pairs of these back when they were on sale for only $280 a pair!

I would not pay the full $600 a pair for these but at $400 or lower a pair you simply can't beat them.

It was between these and the Polk Rti line of bookshelf speakers. These sounded better to me but not by much.

These are a discontinued speaker line from Def Tech and are usually discounted between 30 and 50% so buy them for $300 a pair or less by looking around and waiting for a sale!

My Dad owned the BP-1 towers and a pair of B-Poles so I knew the type of sound I was going to get and they didn't disappoint at all!

5 out of 5 eggsMADE TO LAST, BIG TIME!

Pros: Lots of pros. The look is great, fit and finish is wonderful. I would not wait one more day if you are considering these speakers. The design is perfect for a bookshelf speaker. The tweeter is so nice, smooth, brilliant, music comes alive, enough bass without a sub, but in my opinion ALL speakers under $5,000.00 need a good sub, and so I chose the Definitive Tech 8000, wonderful match, all have the beautiful highly polished top and bottom. These speakers have a large enough bass driver to do a very nice job, PLUS the passive radiator, which for me works better than a duct port. You are making a mistake by waiting on this speaker, as they will be gone soon, and Definitive Technology does not have anything better, but they do have something much more expensive.

Cons: No cons, other than they are not a Rosewood finish, but then they take the finish out of the equation and instead give you a HEAVY, well made cabinet, sonically, thick MDF, and the grill look with the highly polished top just look so darn nice. Really, no cons, this is just a well built product, and now you can get it and less than half price, what in the hell are you waiting for??

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb Sound in a Tough Enclosure

Pros: Natural, transparent sound
Good low frequency reproduction

Cons: Highs a bit harsh

Other Thoughts: Got these for a steal on Newegg a couple years back, for $250 shipped. They're still going strong. Driven by a pro audio dedicated 250W X 2 power amplifier, they don't even flinch. In fact, the extra wattage brings them to life!

Bonus points for a durable enclosure... My dog toppled over one speaker stand, and the speaker landed full force on the hardwood floor. The wood used to build the enclosure must be 1" thick, as there was no more than a scuff to show for it. Built like bricks.

My only criticism (and a minor one) is the tweeter. Although accurate, it can be harsh. An attenuation switch would have been a nice option.

A crucial factor, especially with the side-firing radiator is speaker placement. Try to leave a good 1 - 1 1/2 ft. clearance on the side nearest the wall. Since they are not a ported design, I find that rear clearance has little bearing on sound. Adjust speaker angles as well as heights until optimal imaging is achieved.

Overall, a fantastic speaker, and an unreal bargain if you time the purchase right!

2 out of 5 eggs1 speaker DOA

Pros: Soon as I turned them on I knew something was wrong.
1 speaker sounded really good full and has bass.
Other speaker could barely even hear it like whispers and no vibration from the 10"driver.
I really loved the sound of them so I decided to contact Def Tech maybe I was missing something cause they make pretty robust technology. Tried multiple solutions even hooked up different speakers to my receiver found out the receiver was not the issue and they we're getting plenty of power.

Cons: Waited all week for these to get here to get let down.
And newegg wont let me just send 1 speaker back gotta be both.
Can't believe they don't check to make sure everything is working 100% before releasing it thought this company is suppose to be superior!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Price

Pros: I'll start with describing the build quality and appearance. The pictures don't do these speakers justice, they are actually very elegant and very well built.

Sound wise, I was worried I was significantly downgrading from a set of $2k audiophile grade towers. But I was pleasantly surprised, they sound very clean and transparent. I have tested them extensively and found them to have a nice clean and articulated sound stage, and a can fill a moderate size living room very nicely.

Cons: They really don't have any cons that I could find and I'm usually very critical and objective.

Other Thoughts: These speakers really do better with a stand alone subwoofer as they simply do not go low enough. However this is only a user preference thing... and I like bass.

5 out of 5 eggs450 Pair Rocks!

Pros: Excellent speakers, got today from Newegg at $279+tax pair, hooked it up and amazing sound qualitty with Marantz receivers. It replaced my Energy ones which serviced me more than 10 years. Newegg service was great. I have to admit, it improved a lot.

Cons: So far none.

5 out of 5 eggsVert Satisfied - You will not be disappointed!

Pros: Amazing Soundstage
Great looks and presence
Very clear
Decent base response but placement is key

Cons: Base response is quite decent but does require a dedicated subwoofer to supplement them. The speaker may appear bright to some. I am fine with it since I use them as my TV speakers with some occasional music.

Other Thoughts: I almost tought about giving it 4 stars as I am sure there are some warmer speakers out there. It depends on your use case. If you are looking to built a home theater set or have them as your multi media speakers, these won't disappiont. Worth every penny if you can get them at a deal here at newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Bookshelf Speakers--Recommended

Pros: I had some Polk RTi4 Bookshelf Speakers that I purchased because I could afford them years ago. Using them with an old Denon 250 stereo receiver (2 way), 50 watts per channel with some dynamic headroom. Recently, I starting listening Japanese popular music, ie girl bands like AKB48, SKE48, and so forth. The multitude of female voices overwhelmed my RTi4s and there was no separation. Saw a great deal for the Def Tech 450s at $300/pair with shipping on NewEgg. Had not heard of Def Tech before this, but the NewEgg reviews were good, so I purchased from NewEgg. Delivery was fast and speakers were undamaged. Could not be happier. I have even been listening to my old CD collection. Every CD sounds better now.

--Detailed sound that captures the music as recorded.
--Able to reproduce the highs and midrange accurately
--Base is fantastic for a bookshelf.
--Speakers are solid and look good.
--Best sounding speakers I have owned. (Used to be a mid-budget audiophile with full size speakers, before I moved into a dinky NY apartment) with too much rent.
--To be honest, I do not understand why these speakers are still available at the price NewEgg is selling them at. I think the value is close to the $599 list price for the speakers. $500 would be a great price for the speakers. The $300 I purchased it at was a total steal!
--Ownership about 3 months.

Cons: --Thought it was a steal at $300 from NewEgg. Now it is $250!
--Started out a little bright in the high frequencies. However, after playing for a while, the sound is becoming more natural and delicate. Not really a con, since other Def Tech says that it takes about 100 hours to break in the speakers. I expect the mellowing to continue. Even on the first day, the speakers sounded a lot better than my old speakers.

Other Thoughts: --Also purchased subwoofer MartinLogan Dynamo 300 from NewEgg at same time for about $100. However, since the Def Tech 450 have precise bass that goes pretty low, not sure if I need a subwoofer, especially since I live in an apartment. Often leave subwoofer off especially at night.
--Purchased based on NewEgg reviews. I trust NewEgg reviews because NewEgg does not edit out negative reviews. NewEgg reviewers are honest. I remember once I purchased a motherboard from NewEgg. Without the comments about the specs in the reviews, I never would have gotten the motherboard to work.
