Type
Solar Charger / Battery

Feature

Features
S1050 solar charger uses the power of the sun to charge two triple AAA NIMH rechargeable batteries, in just 6 hour on a sunny day. The thin portable chargers just need a sunny or shady spot to go to work!

Sleek and slim, the S1050 solar charger fits on a window sill. Once the batteries are charged, the S1050 will work anywhere to charge your devices. The unit is glass free and durable.

Temperature doesn't affect the charger. Solar chargers do not lose performance when the temperature exceeds 77°F (25° C) as under actual outdoor operating conditions. In sunny situations, it will charge a MP3 player in 2.5 hours (See chart for additional charging times).

The solar conductor is constructed by depositing extremely thin layers on flexible stainless steel substrate. Typically the panel is 1 millimeter thick.

The charger is exceptionally durable and is strengthened by being encapsulated in UV stabilized polymers. Glass-Free solar chargers protect solar cells by DuPont polymer films instead of fragile glass.

Utilizing thin film triple junction high voltage technology, this solar charger has 3 times higher shadow tolerance than conventional solar technology to help the unit charge in cloudy or shady conditions.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks but needs tons of sun

Pros: Sent this to my brother in law who is stationed in Iraq...says he hangs it out his window and it charges his ipod just fine. So 5 stars...but with disclaimer in other thoughts...

Cons: Based on reading other reviews...you'll see it needs tons of sun...which they have in the middle east!!

Other Thoughts: I have played with small solar cells before. In my experience, when dealing with small cells such as this...the sun has to be perfect...no clouds etc...and the placement of the solar cell has to be perfect...even if the angle is off by a dregee or two...it can affect the performance...

1 out of 5 eggsSimply does not work

Pros: Only cost me $15

Cons: It doesn't even make a good boomerang

Other Thoughts: Doesn't work. I wish I had read more reviews before I had tried to test it out.

3 out of 5 eggsPossibly not useless?

Pros: It charges AAA batteries just fine. It should charge anything under 2.3V without a hitch...
If you remove the batteries it will charge some devices; at least it will charge a Motorola Razr phone. It will not charge an iPhone 4.

Cons: It holds a pair of 1.2V AAA batteries but is advertised to charge cell phones and other modern devices - not gonna happen. The batteries are the problem, remove them and it will charge some devices - not anything made by apple (iPhone, iPod) because Steve Jobs likes to make things work only the way he wants them to; with his brand accessories.

Simply, the batteries are causing the draining and the devices that stop and don't drain have their own protection systems.

Other Thoughts: Simply, the batteries are causing the draining and the devices that stop and don't drain have their own protection systems. They operate at a combined 2.4V and in the case of most cell phones they're trying to charge a 3-4.5V battery which simply is not possible. The circuitry runs thru the batteries when they are in place and limits the output...

1 out of 5 eggsthe anti-charger...TERRIBLE.

Pros: Looks sci-fi. Awesome idea if only it worked. Pretty LED light.
Makes a wonderful paperweight or doorstop.

Cons: Everything. I'm out 20 bucks (thankfully it was a ShellShocker...). I had read several positive reviews and though I'd give it a try. I followed the instructions to the letter. Here are the products I tried it on and the results:
1) BlackBerry Curve: charges for less than a minute and the DRAINS the BlackBerry's power.
2) Ipod Classic - charges for less than a minute then stops charging.
3) IPhone - not recognized by IPhone.
4) older BlackBerry - doesn't charge at all.
5) Ipod touch - drains the power sometimes, not recognized at others.

Other Thoughts: I would love for the manufacturer to give me my 20 bucks back. not only did it not help the environment by reduving the amount of electricity I use, but now i have to throw it out.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Garbage

Pros: None.

Cons: It does work. You can leave it in the sunlight all day and the batteries will not fully charge. I bought it to charge my Sansa clip but instead of re-charging it, it drains it! I bought it just before I left for vacation. Now it's too late to send it back. What a total waste of money.

1 out of 5 eggsAgreed, doesn't work

Pros: None.

Cons: Bought this to charge a Sansa 2GB MP3 player. It would have been the perfect solution if it worked. Doesn't charge, even in full sunlight.

Other Thoughts: Bought as a shell shocker, so it's too much much trouble to return for what I paid. Still, hate to see $$ just washed down the drain. Would be furious if I paid full price.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

Pros: It kinda charges the batteries

Cons: More often than not the batteries will not be charged in the time frame stated. And even if they are (or you put in full batteries) it does not put out 5V over USB continuously so it cannot adequately recharge a phone. Sometimes it will charge a device for only a few minutes, other times it will not charge them at all.

1 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: Great concept - zero execution

Cons: Spec's say 6 hr charge - no way! Was outside last weekend and put this in the bright sunlight for 8 hrs and it charged my IPOD for 2 minutes before it ran out. I does NOT have anything near the capacity listed

Other Thoughts: I like the idea but it certainly doesnt work at all. Given the other reviews here - I would avoid and look for a better device.

1 out of 5 eggsWorse than trash

Pros: Will make a great wedge to hold open doors. I didn't pay $49.99 for the piece of trash.

Cons: Not sure if it ever worked the first day out of the package. If it did, it didn't act like instruction manual indicated it should. Second day the indicator light shows no indication of life, it certainly is not charging anything through the USB port.

Other Thoughts: Have bought quite a few products from Newegg with great success. Don't know if it is worth the effort to make a return for this item bought off of a Shell Shocker sale. Product seemed like a great idea. If by some miracle, I find that I have done something wrong, I'll write another review. Buyer beware of this product
