1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: None

Cons: This device does not work as promised. It has a very hard time tuning into any station (my TV does a better job at tuning in the signal) and it blanks out repeatedly both when watching live TV and when playing back video from the USB port it will hang in the middle. Do not buy.

1 out of 5 eggsI Cannot Recommend This Unit

Pros: First the good part: the test recording I made off the air was perfect. The unit doesn't convert, compress or do anything to the signal. It played back in the exact same quality as it aired.

(I did buy this through Newegg, and it arrived in two days...so they get the usual kudos for good service.)

Cons: Now the bad part...everything else. This is hardware version 3 of the unit. According to the postings in the Mediasonic forum, this version has a severe sensitivity problem...as in having none. Here is what I just wrote to their tech support:

"I am having the same problems as many in the forums. Every other TV, digital tuner, etc. I posses picks up 16 digital home frequencies (XX-1) when plugged into my brand new huge antenna with one single new cable attached. The HW-150 picks up only 6. I live in the New York metropolitan area and am only a few miles from the Empire State building, where all but two of the frequencies comes from...with a clear line of site to my antenna.

Also, when setting the unit to "loop through," I find that just about no signal comes out at all. I dragged out an old analog TV, tested it with an old converter box, found it was working perfectly and found when I set the HW-150 to channel 4 output, there was no signal, and when set to channel 3 output, there was just the slightest indication of signal."

It will be interesting to see what they say...if they do.

The unit will play a variety of video formats. However, the videos play back very dark with low resolution, despite being plugged into my TV with an HDMI cable. These same videos playback much better on two other media boxes I own. The unit will play VOB files, but will not read a TS directory and playback as a DVD. Also, the unit will only delete files with a .mts extension...which is the format container it records in. So if you have files on a USB to watch once and then delete (having them archived elsewhere as I do) then you will not be able to delete them without plugging into some other device, or first renaming every file with a .mts extension on it.

Other Thoughts: This was a major disappointment. I would have been satisfied with just its recording capability...except of course it won't get the channels that are so strong you can get them on your fillings.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: Good price. Many capabilities for the price. Supports a lot of file formats. You can attach the external HD to your computer and edit file names and delete and copy files. Records in MTS file format which provides very large files but excellent quality.

Cons: Not many when you consider the price.

The shows are saved as WBFC181-12082014-1501.mts for a show that was recorded on channel call letter WBFC181 on December 08, 2014 at 3:01 pm. Imagine trying to select your show of choice if you have 100 recordings.

Other Thoughts: This is a bare bones PVR solution. The idea behind it is really good. Probably because the price point is so low, they have cut corners on a lot of features.

They subcontract all of their programing out to China and it shows in strange ways. For instance, when you go to edit the names of channels there is no ability to input a space or a period, but you can input a comma. Another example of poor design is that the shows are saved as WBFC181-12082014-1501.mts for a show that was recorded on channel call letter WBFC181 on December 08, 2014 at 3:01 pm. Imagine trying to select your show of choice if you have 100 recordings. If you extrapolate those concepts out across other areas of design I think you will get a good idea of what kind of problems you will encounter with this unit. The company also seems to have limited ability to request corrections to problems like these despite many requests on it's forum.

The remote is also bare bones and not well thought out. Also, the materials used in this unit are very cheap. The USB port intermittently fails to recognize the attached external drive, but works as soon as you take it out and reconnect it.

I would prefer that they up the quality, the design, and the ability to modify programing errors and short comings and charge twice as much.

One thing to note is that OTA reception provides way better quality content than any cable or dish company provides. It's not even close so long as the broadcast is in 1080P. This unit captures that quality very well.

1 out of 5 eggsFirmware Problems with V3

Pros: Easy Setup

Cons: The programming guide is behind by 5 days.
Check the forum.mediasonic.ca before purchasing. You'll find more interesting comments.

The firmware seems to be a mess on this product.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this unit until issues are fixed. I really rate it ZERO Eggs!

1 out of 5 eggsCurrent V3 model defective tuner

Pros: inexpensive dvr and video player

Cons: Defective tuner in the V3 model - current dec 2014. Have a V2 model from about 8 months ago which picks up as good as my TV. the first V3 unit had a standby problem, but the tuner was terrible - only picked up half the channels the V2 did. The V3 replacement unit has the same defective tuner - only picks up half the channels. - standby works fine in second V3 unit. Check the Mediasonic forum the present V3 model has a defective tuner.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 for 2 being bad - no reason to try returning; all the V3 units have the defective tuner. Can't get money back so got a video playback unit.... read the mediasonic forum. May try to get mediasonic to replace with a refurb V2 that has a working tuner.

5 out of 5 eggsA Must-have for budget cable-cutters

Pros: Inexpensive, DVR functionality, picture & sound quality, plays back almost any digital format, small form factor.

Cons: Glitchy, confusing firmware, low quality laggy remote, poor remote angle, unreliable recording, poor reception

Other Thoughts: This device is a bit glitchy and the firmware appears to have been written by a 5th grader, but it seems to somewhat reliably get the job done once you start to think like a 5th grader. Just don't expect miracles from it.

Mine had outdated firmware that displayed the wrong date (always 5 days in the past). An email to Mediasonic and I had a new firmware in my inbox the next day that resolved the problem.

Video quality is excellent but reception is iffy. I had to move my RCA digital flat antenna closer to the window for it to match my TVs reception with the antenna closer to the center of my apartment.

The remote is horrible, in quality, in layout and in range. I have to point it directly at the box and reach to within about 2m for it to work and there is significant lag between button-press and seeing something happen on the screen so you have to be patient. You have to memorize where the buttons are because they are counter-intuitive and seem to have been placed at random. I have yet to find a universal remote that lists this device. A learning remote might be the only alternative.

Fast-forward and rewind are pretty bad too. You can't accurately stop a fast forward through commercials.

It can play just about any digital format from mpeg to flv to divx, etc. (it doesn't seem to like Quicktime files). Has played almost everything I have thrown at it and beautifully .

Like some others here, I frequently experience missed recordings due to the USB device somehow becoming unrecognized. I have tried flash drives of all qualities and several USB hard drives. My most recent attempt is using a drive mounted in a powered enclosure (Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK) left powered on. I will also try a USB hub as Richard H suggests if that doesn't work.

Lots of problems, but worth it? Absolutely. 5 eggs for this price.

5 out of 5 eggsGood enough and Durable

Pros: Solid performance within its design limits.

Cons: Not really any cons if one needs to compare it to other products within this genre.
The player can only index around two thousand files.
It freezes every couple of months during continuous use and requires a restart.

Other Thoughts: Have been running my unit 24-7, playing videos off of a 1Terrabyte laptop hard drive without an external power supply, since I bought it here (NewEgg) on 12-03-2013. It outputs to one position of my four position Zemodo security DVR, that I also bought here at NewEgg.
Had to section off the videos into 2000 file directories because this DVR can't index more than that. I have old TV shows that are looped on the DVR's screen continuously, as we get few channels at our location regardless of which tuner we use.
Other than that, this rig is iron clad.
It's tuner is also more sensitive than the iView box that I also bought from NewEgg back then. I liked the remote control on the iView unit better but it's nowhere near as good as the Mediasonic for the core functions.
The iView would be better if they actually upgraded the firmware to fix them properly, but they haven't done anything in that regard since MARCH OF 2014.For all its warts, this is the better of the two.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent For Cord Cutters!

Pros: The little box that can! This is the only OTA box I have found that has an HDMI output. This makes it perfect for your projector that doesn't have coax!

The DVR records to .mts which my Mac and Windows PC can read perfectly fine with no converting!!

I have tested thumb drives, as well as large 2TB internal drives hooked up via an external enclosure. Both work great with no requirement to format existing content! (new folder called HBPVR is created)

Cons: Menu system leaves much to be desired. It's not the most user friendly and the guide only shows you what is playing today. User interface could use work, but all the functionality is workable.

Other Thoughts: One of the best $37 a cord cutter could spend. Pair this with an HDX1000 antenna (connects right where your dish used to be and doesn't look ugly!) plus a Chromecast and you will have more content to watch then you could ever consume!
