1 out of 5 eggsThird Thoughts

Pros: Nice form factor, handles a lot of file formats.

Cons: There are better choices on the market, firmware updates for this player are very hit and miss. Same price as the bigger name competition, but fewer features and very little support.

Other Thoughts: I had high hopes for this unit and bought 2 of them. Now they sit pretty much unused as a result of the manufacturer's inability to follow through on promised firmware updates.

The big issue is that DTS audio tracks will *only* play back over the optical output, so you pretty much have to hook this thing up to an A/V receiver that has an optical audio input as most high-def MKV files have DTS audio tracks.

This is particularly irritating since this update has been literally promised "any day now" for month after month after month on the very sparsely populated Kaifa support forum at Datoptic. Google Kaifa forum to see for your yourself.

It's a box with a lot of potential, but appears to have been pretty much abandoned by it's manufacturer at this point. I would strongly recommend buying the popcorn hour product if you are in the market for an NMT. I don't like the form factor as well, but they fixed the DTS issue some time ago, and have a very active support community.

5 out of 5 eggsReally cool NMT

Pros: This is an awesome NMT, is has support for web services like Youtube, flickr etc. Plays pretty much every codec imaginable(although there are a few it has trouble with), and is compatible with Linux shares/runs a linux based OS. I've had the Kaifa for about 4 months and it is absolutely awesome, I love the fact that I can share something and watch it using a remote on my 40" inch TV. The latest firmware update really did wonders for glitches.

Cons: It does take a second to start up.... There are few glitches such as pausing a movie, restarting your computer and then trying to play it..... The rewind and fastforward function are somewhat slow which is why I use seek for the most part, I think it's something to do with how fast you need to stream for fastforwarding and rewinding.... The torrent download is useless

Other Thoughts: Really awesome, I recommend it to anybody. I have friend with a netgear and neuros streamer and they still don't match up to this

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T THINK ABOUT IT!!

Pros: - Very Well designed, and constructed!
- All software features seems to work.

Do yourself a favor and just buy the Real Thing... Popcorn Hour!
DO NOT waste your time to save a little money!

Cons: - Typical Chinese manual (Does NOT include inst. install HD)
- Support is Full of False Promises!
They say DTS is ready when it is NOT. They tell to to connect it to a Receiver... but how convenient is that? This is Pump and Dump operation.. peeps! Don't say I didn't warn you!

2 out of 5 eggsplays everything but its still not good

Pros: * It plays every format you trow at it.
* Its silent
* its compact and small

Cons: * Interface is slow
* Interface is not intuative
* Once you go into a folder to play muzic, you have to click each song to play , it doesn't automaticly play all songs from folder
* Fast Forward its slow
* Scrolling through list of movies from the network its really slow, and when you go back it looses the patch that you were just in

Other Thoughts: Its more trouble then its worth...

If the interface was intuative, fast, and supported, playlists, and movie tumbnails and even description then this device would be perfect

but its not...

Cons: None, now that the update was released

Other Thoughts: Would like to see a nicer GUI and gigabit would be fabulous!

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of money

Pros: Plays many formats....that's it.

Cons: Slow, ugly GUI. Some genius thought light blue on dark blue would be a good contrast and quite easy to read...

Has crashed and locked up so many times on me it's not even funny. Leaving it alone for an hour/day is enough to make it lock up or crash.

Today was the final straw. I turned it on, and it was flipping between two menu screens rapidly for no reason at all and the remote was unresponsive. Turning it on and off has bricked it.

Will never, ever buy a Kaifa product again, and would recommend against anyone else buying their first.

Another worthless product to come out of the guangdong.

Other Thoughts: This product would have been returned if the box I was saving for it hadn't gotten accidentally thrown away. I'm quite upset about this, because this product is now a brick, and KaiFa customer support is non-existent. I'm surprised newegg would even sell trash from this company.

4 out of 5 eggsgood but not perfect

Pros: Small form factor, network interface, USB keyboard support, SATA HDD support, SMB server, skinable.

Cons: Crashes on playback of some media, firmware not updated as often as other NMT, compatibility with DirecTV HR2x, complete disassembly required for secure HDD installation, 20 sec boot, lack of 1Gb Enet (only 10/100).

Other Thoughts: Nice device although not without its faults. First and foremost you should know that if you have a DirecTV HR2x HD DVR on your network, take it off network. This and most (all?) NMT based players loop on discovery of the HR2x UPnP. Google "NMT HR20" for more info. Otherwise, this unit is a good size NMT player that seems to perform pretty well. I wish it would not crash on playback of some media. Need to analyze a few AVI to figure out why it wont play back. Also may crash if you press stop too soon after starting a video (1-2 sec). May be addressed in future firmware but Kaifa seems slow at releasing new versions compared to other NMT. Wish had 1Gb Enet to speed xfer of files to NMT HDD.

3 out of 5 eggsSecond Thoughts

Pros: Nice design, a lot of capability in a small package.

Cons: Kaifa is slow in releasing firmware updates.
Remote is very irritating to use, it must be pointed straight at the unit.
No DTS audio over HDMI output, optical out only for DTS.
User community is non-existent.

Other Thoughts: A week ago I was raving about this player. Now I have some reservations. This is a device that is known as a NMT, or Networked Media Tank. Several manufacturers make them and they appear to be nearly identical in terms of hardware and capabilities. The most popular seems to be a box called The Popcorn Hour.

The real problem is that different manufacturers seem to release firmware updates at their own pace. Popcorn Hour has been pretty aggressive, and has updated firmware several times since the last update from kaifa.

Of note, Popcorn Hour, and a couple of others will now do DTS audio over HDMI. This unit won't, and that means you can't play back files that use DTS audio unless you have an optical audio input on your TV or receiver.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat media extender

Pros: Plays just about everything I've thrown at it, including XVID, DIVX, mts files from blu-ray, VIDEO_TS folders from DVD shrink. . .

mounts networks shares, doesn't depend on media server

plays everything. Almost. . .

Cons: I see notes in the firmware updates that indicates it does, in fact, play ISO files. I have yet to be able to do that. If I figure that out, then I could declare this is the media extender everyone has been waiting for.

also, beware, this unit IS NOT WIRELESS OUT OF THE BOX. you need to purchase the approved USB dongle adapter for that.

Other Thoughts: Menus are a little slow at times. And when the boxs hangs up, i have to hard boot it. Neither of these things outweigh how handy it is though.
