good but not perfect
- Pros: Small form factor, network interface, USB keyboard support, SATA HDD support, SMB server, skinable.
- Cons: Crashes on playback of some media, firmware not updated as often as other NMT, compatibility with DirecTV HR2x, complete disassembly required for secure HDD installation, 20 sec boot, lack of 1Gb Enet (only 10/100).
- Other Thoughts: Nice device although not without its faults. First and foremost you should know that if you have a DirecTV HR2x HD DVR on your network, take it off network. This and most (all?) NMT based players loop on discovery of the HR2x UPnP. Google "NMT HR20" for more info. Otherwise, this unit is a good size NMT player that seems to perform pretty well. I wish it would not crash on playback of some media. Need to analyze a few AVI to figure out why it wont play back. Also may crash if you press stop too soon after starting a video (1-2 sec). May be addressed in future firmware but Kaifa seems slow at releasing new versions compared to other NMT. Wish had 1Gb Enet to speed xfer of files to NMT HDD.
new firmware release
- Pros: New firmware release fix most problem, beware DTS audio pass through only must use AMP not on TV, support RMVB with myihome server,
- Cons: beware DTS audio pass through only must use AMP not on TV, bt feature useless.

Third Thoughts
- Pros: Nice form factor, handles a lot of file formats.
- Cons: There are better choices on the market, firmware updates for this player are very hit and miss. Same price as the bigger name competition, but fewer features and very little support.
- Other Thoughts: I had high hopes for this unit and bought 2 of them. Now they sit pretty much unused as a result of the manufacturer's inability to follow through on promised firmware updates.
The big issue is that DTS audio tracks will *only* play back over the optical output, so you pretty much have to hook this thing up to an A/V receiver that has an optical audio input as most high-def MKV files have DTS audio tracks.
This is particularly irritating since this update has been literally promised "any day now" for month after month after month on the very sparsely populated Kaifa support forum at Datoptic. Google Kaifa forum to see for your yourself.
It's a box with a lot of potential, but appears to have been pretty much abandoned by it's manufacturer at this point. I would strongly recommend buying the popcorn hour product if you are in the market for an NMT. I don't like the form factor as well, but they fixed the DTS issue some time ago, and have a very active support community.
Really cool NMT
- Pros: This is an awesome NMT, is has support for web services like Youtube, flickr etc. Plays pretty much every codec imaginable(although there are a few it has trouble with), and is compatible with Linux shares/runs a linux based OS. I've had the Kaifa for about 4 months and it is absolutely awesome, I love the fact that I can share something and watch it using a remote on my 40" inch TV. The latest firmware update really did wonders for glitches.
- Cons: It does take a second to start up.... There are few glitches such as pausing a movie, restarting your computer and then trying to play it..... The rewind and fastforward function are somewhat slow which is why I use seek for the most part, I think it's something to do with how fast you need to stream for fastforwarding and rewinding.... The torrent download is useless
- Other Thoughts: Really awesome, I recommend it to anybody. I have friend with a netgear and neuros streamer and they still don't match up to this
DON'T THINK ABOUT IT!!
- Pros: - Very Well designed, and constructed!
- All software features seems to work.
Do yourself a favor and just buy the Real Thing... Popcorn Hour! DO NOT waste your time to save a little money!
- Cons: - Typical Chinese manual (Does NOT include inst. install HD)
- Support is Full of False Promises! They say DTS is ready when it is NOT. They tell to to connect it to a Receiver... but how convenient is that? This is Pump and Dump operation.. peeps! Don't say I didn't warn you!
