1 out of 5 eggsGet remote from Philips

Pros: None. Never had a chance to evaluate.

Cons: I was sent a unit without appropriate Philips remote twice. I was furious Newegg sent me the same thing the second time when I asked explicitly for Philips original remote and speakers and subwoofer. Without a Philips remote, the substitute remote does not work according to Philips people. Some people may consider making it work, but not a choice for me.

Other Thoughts: I want people there who are willing to make it work to know that you can get a Philips remote from Philips. Call Philips USA and demand it in their warranty period, you'll get one or exchange for a unit with one. Philips people explicitly told me that the "3 in 1" generic remote does not work with the system.

I initially blamed Newegg for posting fake product. I called Philips to verify the product and warranty. I think most of the blame should be Philips'. Philips offered me a new remote. But they did not answer my question about the extended warranty. They also told me that the insignia on the subwoofer may just came off, which is of course not true. Even though it's not important to have the insignia as long as the speakers work, I returned the unit to Newegg for a refund.

Newegg had promptly addressed my concerns the second time. They had apologized for their oversight and elevated the issue to higher levels. They had offered me a store credit. I switched to purchase a Sony system instead. Hope Sony will not disappoint me.

I'm OK with Newegg's service now but still value this system as poor. A new Philips remote for this model cost $40, thus reducing 40% value of the unit. Even though you can get one from Philips, it's simply too much hassle for a new purchase. The refurbished unit does not have that much a price break to justify the trouble.

When you call Philips, you immediately know why they substitute the parts with generic cheap one. I was told that they are short on the remote, "back ordered for weeks". Nonetheless, you should press for exchange or a new remote. I think it's fraud to sell worthless substitute parts as refurbished item. Everyone buying this deserves a Philips original working remote.

I did not have a chance to test the speakers. But I think they are relatively low tech and a substitute could easily work. The build of the substitute speakers is of better quality than the apparent fraudulent remote.

I'm satisfied with Newegg but not Philips. Selling cheap substitute parts as refurbished is fraud and unethical business model.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat for the price

Pros: let us rate this guy..

Sound *****
Blu-ray\DVD *****
Ease of use ***
Hardware **** ( would be five stars if not for the cheap remote)
output\input ***

for a 1k WAT system, it's great, we keep it around for

Cons: 1- cheap none philips remote sent, lots of missing functionality.
2- yes no digi coax or HDMI cables are provided. it's cool.
3- input\output, only 1 HDMI, 1 digital coax, 1 mp3, 1 old analog... no USB, 2nd HDMI or fiber optic!! kinda shux for "home theater.
4- not that easy to program.
5- you cannot add to the apps. i did not know and this would have been a deal breaker.

Other Thoughts: overall its the best you can get for the price. spend another 100 and get a better one. I hate the fact you cannot add apps.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: For the price a nice 1k watt system that works well with my 46 LCD Samsung TV
Was unable to test surround sound via an HD channel (see cons) but testing a couple blue rays and DVDs produced a decent surround sound.

Cons: No cables. Had to buy a HDMI cable from Best--Buy with the bloated price. Then I discovered I did not have an optical digital sound cable. So I have to stop again tonight to spend more.

The controller was NOT a Phillips controller. But I use a programmable universal remote that detected the system and works just fine.

Other Thoughts: 100 bucks for a home theater system was worth it. It is not a Bose or other high end system but it works well.

2 out of 5 eggsGood unit, bad remote

Pros: Good video and sound

Cons: Remote, able to connect to internet, functionality

Other Thoughts: The unit itself is ok for the price point, but the remote is not Phillips, and I could not confirm my wi-fi passcode to connect it to the internet. Without the wi-fi function, there was no reason to keep it. NewEgg customer service was helpful and offered a refund, so good for them, but need better quality control on who they source their refurbs from. With a factory remote, would be a 5 star review, but without it, it's hard if not impossible to use.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap remote control

Pros: Yet to discover. I got it today, the unit looks like new, feels like new.

Cons: Yet to discover. But the remote is not Philips original and looks CHEAP. The worst thing is that it fails to function, well, worked long enough to let me connect the unit wireless to Internet. Then it went complete dead. The unit is useless without a functioning remote.

Other Thoughts: I also purchased 2year replacement warranty. I contacted Newegg and was refunded $25 for the purchase of a new remote at local stores. I'll see if I can find the appropriate model and how the unit works. Newegg customer service is doing fine there.
