5 out of 5 eggsThis what it is. A great deal

Pros: Where do I start USB port is a great feature.Digital input is fantastic when using with a sound card. Awesome Oh The manual states plain as day which cable to use.Fm radio,XmRadio, 2 aux connections. Its all there and more.I have 3 of these in different settings and they adjust to individual environments flawlessly.Every thing is adjustable by the remote Even volume on individual speakers. So if the movie your watching has a lot of bass a you can just lower the volume on the sub from your chair and if your T.V. was made after the I Love Lucy show aired Samsung has a code. Just read the directions it has ample codes available. If you want an inexpensive system that performs above its price range this is it.Did my homework this was my first choice. Also if you are designing a media center this is what you want, works great with my Audigy sound blaster card.Using either the digital hook up or just shooting a line

Cons: Remote is a little awkward but you get used to it.I use the included Samsung remote and I admit it took awhile to set up. It handles my TV's and other components flawlessly.
I bought it for a special shelf and goofed. So check your dimensions it is deep not huge .

Other Thoughts: When writing a review I share the information I acquired while shopping.I don't buy a Chevy and say it lacks in comparison to my Bentley. Put this next to any system in the same price range and it will hold its own. A great buy from a great Company.

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung HT-Q70 Progress Report

Pros: - Sounds much better than the TV speakers, no surprise there.
- Has 2 AUX audio inputs and a digital audio input! However, don't go out and buy the digital optic cable until you are sure it fits (I didn't check and now I have to return the cable). It seems there are three types of end fittings for the optical cables. I bought what I thought was a "standard" cable and one end did look like the right type to fit the Q70 but it would not go in. Looks like some more experimentation required here.
- HDMI output. I have a cable on order from Optimized Cable but it hasn't arrived yet. I've used them before, great products at a good price.
- Dolby PLII for converting stereo into surround sound. I fed the RCA right/left stereo output from the cable box to AUX 1 and got surround sound! In fact, there are several modes selectable: Music, Cinema, Matrix and just stereo. There are also "effects" which can be selected which affect the "width" of the sound image. I have tried these yet but it app

Cons: - Speakers: Although much better than the TV speakers, they don't hold a candle to my AR-2ax speakers with 10" woofers driven by my vintage Onyko amp. The sub-woofer is weak. Again, it depends on what you're looking for. I mainly wanted to replace the TV speakers and for that it's excellent. They are never going to replace a serious setup for listening to music in detail, but they are okay for causal listening.
- CD/DVD mechanism. There have been several reports of the DVD/CD mechanism failing. The store model gave an alarming squeak when the CD tray came out. The boxed one I bought operates smoothly (so far). A concern but it does come with a one year warranty. We'll see.

Other Thoughts: For controlling all this, I have a Harmony 520 remote which can be had for $xx at Wxxxxrt. The best thing about the unit is the "Activities" feature where, for example, to turn on the TV, the Set Top Box and the AVR with whatever settings you want to default to (channel, picture settings, etc.), you just push one button and it's all on. To turn off, you also just push one button. If you want to switch between watching the TV using the cable to a DVD, it's smart enough to know if the TV is already on so it doesn't toggle the on/off switch. It's programmed via the USB port so the database of device codes is always up to date. Once programmed, it's easy for my wife to operate (one button on, one button off with the channel and volume controls always using the same buttons).

Well, that's about it. As I use it more and discover more features or problems, I'll report back.

4 out of 5 eggsLooks Good, Sounds Good

Pros: The unit looks good in my cabinet and sounds good in my family room. The setup and alignment was easy. The "speaker delay time" and audio/video sync set up was easy. DVD playback looks great on my HDTV. The five disk carousel works fine. All the DVD operator functions imaginable are there. The controls on the DVD/amp have a nice feel and operation. The manual is actually useful, large and easy to read. The cooling fan is quiet. Built-in are lots of extras, which most poeple won't use (wallpaper, predefined equalizer options.) The front USB port works fine for images and music, although it's finicky when it comes to playing back video files.

Cons: The remote. It works, but it's not intuitive and it's awkward to hold. The TV brand codes are limited so don't plan on using it to do much with the TV or other components.

The provided hookup wire is adequate, but barely.

For some people this might be a con - there's a delay of several second before the sound come back on when changing modes (e.g., switching from Aux 1 to DVD). Also, it's more the tortoise than the hare when it comes to start up and switching between disks on the carousel.

Other Thoughts: The Samsung is a good deal for the money. Overall I'm pleased. There's no phase test capability built in so be sure and get the wiring correct. The HDMI input is useful if you have a secondary DVD player or similar. But, for whatever reason my Sony HD camcorder isn't compatible. I don't have the optional wireless rear speaker system or the XM satellite radio, but I'm sure they work fine. The input and output ports on the back are adequate, although I suspect I'm going to want a second HDMI In port soon.

5 out of 5 eggssounds great

Pros: Excellent sound, automatic switching between surround modes, excellent subwoofer for the price, dvd player looks cool, usb port on front to hook up to usb memory stick drives is great for mp3's, setting volume levels for center, rear, and sub is easy.

Cons: batteries not included for remote :)

Other Thoughts: I don't have an HDTV so i really cant tell you how well it works with the newer TV's, although when scrolling through the menus there were tons of options for it. Same as I can't tell you how great the HDMI or Component hookups compare. Setup was pretty simple and strait forward. Watched Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, and some others and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I turned the sub level all the way up and the volume was already screaming and i never heard any distortion whatsoever. All in all, it is not earth shattering/ house shaking like a 1500 dollar system but it achieves its goal and sounds great doing it. Expect a knock on the door from the neighbors. And as always, Neweggs service is the best and the system arrived a day early. THANKS
