5 out of 5 eggsAn excellent player for the money.

Pros: Records to DVD and VHS formats (including DVD-RAM and +/-R DL). Nice design; supports AnyNET feature. No problems with DVD or VHS playback. Supports HDMI!

Cons: Might be hard to find these days.

Other Thoughts: If you're in the market for a DVD/VHS combo recorder look no further than VR-357 from Samsung. It's affordable, looks slick, and records to virtually all DVD formats including dual-layer and DVD-RAM. I'm running an HDMI cable straight to my LCD television and the picture quality is great (Babylon 5 never looked so good).

I've noticed that's disappeared from store shelves lately which means either Samsung has discontinued it in favor of a newer model or it's reached end-of-life. If you can get one you should; this combo recorder is as good as it gets for the money.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Player

Pros: compatible with DVD-/+R, DVD-/+R DL, DVD-/+R RW, CD-R CD-RW.

can play divx, xvid files, DVD recorder, VCR. 1 touch dubbing both ways works fine: VCR>DVD and DVD>VCR, don't expect DVD quality when dubbing from VCR to DVD.

Can play avi files encoded with QPEL, NVOB,PVOB,BVOP,PB(packed Bitstream)

only 1 connection needed, unlike other players that wont send the VCR signal out over the S-video or HDMI port, this players sends the signal out over any connection you choose (s-video,HDMI,component, composite)
ANY net, if you have a Samsung TV with Anynet 1 remote can control both devices.

An Eject button!! YES! i always wondered why most companies stop making VCR remotes with eject buttons but this one has one and it ejects both DVD and VCR tapes depending on which on is on (you can switch back and forth with a simple press of a button )
1x, 2x and 4x fast forwarding/rewinding when playing Divx/xvid files i think it goes up to 8x when playing an actual DVD.

Cons: No TV turner, but im sure you know that before you brought it (i have cable so i don't need it anyway)

cannot read the UDF disc format (cannot recognize the disc, it will just spit it back out).

cannot properly play AVI 1.0 files (blur/ghosting).

cannot fully play AVI files with Multipart OpenDML (plays for a few seconds then skips to the next file in the list).

Price, but gotta expect that for a DVD recorder

Other Thoughts: burn data discs using an ISO format and it will read all the discs properly.

to solve the AVI 1.0 and Multipart OpenDML issue just run the files through VituralDub MOD choose direct stream copy for video and it should clean up the AVI for you in less than a minute.

Use GSpot to see if the AVI file is AVI 1.0 or contain Multipart OpenDML in the Container field.

the best thing is that i can fit about 11 good quality DVD-rips on 1 double layer disc and watch them all without swapping discs, this is a good investment
