Good performance/price ratio
- Pros: 1000 Watt 5.1 w/ DTS decoding, optical audio input (which seems a little rare on these things?), SD DVD up conversion.
A nice unit, defiantly the sweet spot when price/performance is on the top of you mind. DVD performance is good, up converts well, audio is excellent. Why spend more on another brand when this gets the job done out of the box?
Highly recommened, novice or not.
- Cons: I wasn't expecting more than what I got but cons are: No HDMI inputs, only one optical audio in, wireless capability will cost more. Also, the speak wire has those special connectors that plug into the back of the unit. I wish they would just allow a stripped wire to connect to the back just like the speaker... Speak wire length is also a little short for my tastes. For as cheap as the stuff is, an extra 50 could have been tacked onto the rear speakers, but you can splice that to cheap wire if needed.
The biggest setback for me is the iPOD interface is weak. While the audio quality while using your iPOD is good, you can not shuffle, it will not play iPOD video. I would rather connect the iPOD via analog RCA cables or 3.5mm mini cable.
- Other Thoughts: A good buy for the price, performs well; nice bang for the buck. Wireless isn't a big deal for me... I just hid the cables under my molding, although they barely made it... again, an extra 50 ft would have been nice.
I kind of expected better iPod performance, but I obviously didn't but it for that. How hard would it have been for them to make this unit shuffle the iPod song list? This is easily remedied with the creation of your own play list (this unit WILL play playlists stored on your iPod) that saves your library as shuffled, but it won't be randomized unless you save multiple play lists. No iPod video... kinda disappointing considering $10-$20 will get you a cable that will enable video playback via analog RCA.
Passive sub is no big deal... it hits hard enough for me for movies and does a great job. If you wanted more, you could add a powered sub, but then you probably wouldn't have bought this if you wanted mega bass.
Anyway... a good purchase, you can't go wrong for th
Average
- Pros: An overall average set that offers nice looks with decent function and at an affordable cost. There's nothing in this kit which will blow you away, but it comes with a decent setup for the pricetag with enough features to stand out. Overall it's a great sound system for those looking for an affordable introduction to 5.1 sound and crave a beefier alternative to built in speakers.
- Cons: Not for audiophiles. The sound is somewhat mute and the set never really feels like it lives up to the booming, rich sound that a surround sound system should deliver.
- Other Thoughts: I received the unit as part of a package deal with purchase of a 52" Samsung HDTV. This is not a bad set, but just simply average. Audiophiles need not apply.

Not bad for the price...
- Pros: Cheap.. Simple.. Sounds good.. Easy to setup.. Small form factor.. USB input..
- Cons: Flimsy DVD tray.. Speaker mounts are a bit limited.. Speaker wire connectors.. Single aux audio input..
- Other Thoughts: Overall, a nice system for a low price. I don't have any modern equipment.. so HDMI is not an issue for me, and my only other input is Dish TV, so a single aux input is fine for my situation. I was looking for a system that had USB input, and decided I don't need all the extras of a more expensive system. Turns out I was right, and am happy with this unit (although I would have liked to have gotten the model that holds multiple DVD's but it was not available at the time).
crippleware
- Pros: It uses 3 TI TAS5352 fan cooled class-D amplifiers and a 34.5V switching power supply. Each chip has two channels (in H-bridge mode) of 125 W into 4 ohms, or 750W total. The provided speakers are 3 ohms, so Samsung is claiming 1000W, but TI does not spec the chip into 3 ohm spreakers, so the distortion is going to be worse than expected. None the less, $200 for a 750 W amp with free DVD player, USB DAC, FM tuner, crummy speakers, etc. thrown in for free is not bad. Other info: I think the DVD processor is the Phoenix-II from ESS. ESS DACs are supposed to be pretty good.
- Cons: As I said, the speakers are bad. That would be OK if you happen to have good speakers to use instead... except that it's also crippled: speaker crossover is done in a DSP. There is a setup screen menu entry which allows you to choose the type of speakers you have: the options are "none" and "small" for the left and right channels. There is no way to turn off the LPF for the left and right channels! Clearly the firmware guy thought it would be a good idea, given that the options is "small" instead of "present". The must have been a "large" option, but management said no.. then it would compete with our high-end models.
Another nit: it needs more AUX inputs on the back- it has only one.
- Other Thoughts: This thing is so cheap it competes with "high-end" PC speakers. That's why I originally bought it. But I can't stand crippleware so it's going back.
Great Simple Setup
- Pros: Great Sound Out of the Box, but i would recommend fine tuning it. optical audio sounds beast with the 360. the sub shakes my roommates bed when there is an explosion in COD4. great looking set of speakers. it makes the girls cling tight to you during a scary or intense part in a movie.
- Cons: no HDMI input. ipod interface is a little lame. i wish it had a 2nd optical audio input. gets me into a lot of noise complaint trouble. no remote codes for my TV's remote.
- Other Thoughts: I have it setup with a 42" LCD in my dorm room, and i have already received 2 noise write ups in 1 week. i recommend this for a bedroom or any small viewing area. wires were plenty long for me in my 12' by 15' room.
