3 out of 5 eggsWell Made, But not useful

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch - Mocha Gray SM-V700

Pros: Battery is nice. Sleeping it took 7%.

During the day of non-excessive use it used ~17%

Very Durable - frame is made of steel, the band is very durable from what I can see, the clasp is steel, which gets alot of wear/tear working at a computer. Gorilla glass. Not water proof, but can take a splash or two from a sink or rain drops.

Android development - the Gear only has an accelerometer, so not much can be done in terms of applications. You can however connect with bluetooth to your phone and harness that processing power.

Handy for checking texts when hands are full, can use your nose to open an incoming text or call.

If your car doesn't have steering wheel controls, media controller is very helpful.

Comfortable, fits nicely

finds your lost phone

Comes with an accident plan at best buy. any accident happen, you bring it in you get a new one. 40$

Return policy - Check for a return policy, Besy Buy allows 15 days of trial with a full refund. good period to see if its worth getting (I've decided its not during my trial)

Cons: Nothing fun on it.

Cost. 300$ - twice as much as the smartphone in your pocket.

Market presence isn't big. Development is invite only, so very limited apps available on the market.

Anything that you can do on the watch…. can be done on your phone better. (calls, pictures, snapchat, texting, facebook)

It makes checking the time harder - it unlocks the screen based on accelerometer, but what if you have your arm on your desk using your computer, your arm has nowhere to “accelerate” to. It assumes you have your arm by your side, and bring it up horizontally.

Distracting in dark places, like movie theatres. Cant move your arm without it lighting up - note: brightness can be turned down.

Voice to Text is very very innacurate. I have yet to make a successful SVoice text message that reflected what I said accuratly.

Other Thoughts: Your buying into an idea of the future technology, not so much something that is useful and your going to find extremely convenient in your every day life.
The only use cases I have been able to find are checking time (harder than a normal watch due to screen lock) and music changing (which I can do with my headphones/car controls anyways so nothing new). I used this snowboarding yesterday and it was useful in changing songs, but nothing a new auxillary cable cant handle without spending 300$

4 out of 5 eggsGreat watch, beta managment app...

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch - Mocha Gray SM-V700

Pros: Runs it's own small footprint Android OS.

Multi-touch screen.

Full color screen.

Camera and mic on wristband.

Battery life is great.

Potential for a lot of great apps and functions.

It feels like it's got an actual glass screen not cheap plastic like other smart watches I own.

Samsung really fumbled the ball on this one. I'm using my Gear with the Galaxy SIII which Samsung's web site says it works with. The software was supposed to install automagically using the NFC... you touch your phone to the Gear's dock and "DING!" it starts the install. However that's not my experience at all. I actually had to find the PAK file on one of the hack sites and load it manually since Samsung didn't offer a direct download and their NFC one brought up web address in a pop-up note (which were completely useless) instead of starting the installer. I even did a factory refresh thinking it might have been something I did that caused it not to work, but still... no dice. I'm sure it works perfect with the Note 3, but if you have anything else you'll have to jump through a hoop or two in order to get up and running. Another frustration is that once installed the Samsung App store that's built into the software crashes the app. I'm guessing this will all be addressed with the first update Samsung releases (I've come to expect quality from them, and this isn't a good reflection of their normal MO). All this sounds horrible, but it's not as bad or as hard as it sounds, but if you're new to computers I can completely understand where it might be overwhelming. Just wait for the next update and the new set of reviews if it sounds like more than you want to deal with.

Other Thoughts: I love my Gear and wear it daily and use a good number of its factory installed functions. I look forward to trying new apps and seeing what Samsung does with this great device. I've also got a Pebble, which I like too. Both devices have their flaws (as you read above) but even with that being the case I prefer the Gear and feel like it's not only higher quality, but the issues it has are minor and easily overcome with a time investment of 30 minutes of Google searching... The flaws are all software based and users paying 300 bones for a product shouldn't have to do anything other than un-box, install, and use. The flaws though are easily fixed and I'm sure Samsung will have them all ironed out soon.... I hope.

A note to Samsung:
I own quite a few of your products from my fridge to my TV and phone... this is not the level of polish and quality I've come to expect from your brand on a release product. It's hard to recommend this watch to people in it's current state without offering a "how to fix it" guide with it. The software feels beta at best if you're using anything other than the Note 3. If you're going to tell people the Gear works with the SIII and S4 they shouldn't have to do any additional foot work to make it run. I love my Gear, but your software is killing me.

2 out of 5 eggsInspired to write a real review after seeing that other "review".

This review is from: Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch - Mocha Gray SM-V700

Pros: The thing I liked most about the watch is the pedometer; to anyone who's had a fit bit, this is really cool. You can use S-voice to tell the phone to call people or message people and tell it the message, like a bluetooth headset. It works with Evernote.

Cons: No video chat. No email or social network notifications or ability to read emails. Although more apps are being made for it, there's very little you can do with it that's really spectacular. At this time, the product is very limited.

Other Thoughts: I have the black one, although this is the only one I could review here. This product is way over priced for the functions it provides. If this product allowed me to video chat and have access to my email I would consider the 300 dollars fully justified, but with it's limited functionality this is a mere novelty item that you will get bored with and stop using rather quickly like semi-automatic transmissions. I'm on the fence right now if I'm hold on to mine and see what updates come out or sell it and wait for the next generation to learn from the mistakes in this design.
