Feeling environmentally conscious? Worried about rising fuel and electricity costs? Cut down on those costs and find out which of your appliances, lamps and computers are actually are costing you the most! Just plug them into the Kill-A-Watt electricity usage monitor and it will tell you how efficient they are. The Kill-A-Watt’s easily-readable LCD display measures consumption by the kilowatt-hour, just like the electric company.

Calculate electrical expenses by any period while checking the quality of your incoming power by monitoring the voltage, like frequency and power factor. Now you'll know if it's time for a new appliance, or whether new items touted as "energy saving" are actually doing their job.

kill-a-watt is great

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This product does everything it says it does. It accurately measures all sorts of electrical characteristics, the most useful to be being wattage. Sturdy, no apparent problems. The price is right, too.
Cons: Only one small thing, is that when plugged into a standard wall socket, it does not leave room for something to be plugged into the other adjacent socket. Not really a problem.
Other Thoughts: I believe the documentation said it can take statistical measurements, however I have yet to figure out how. I can see that it does instantaneous measurement, which is fine for me.

Pros: Easy to use (just plug in). Readout fantastic - can leave a device on it for hours and see how many kWh is burned over time. I played with almost all devices at home. A lot of surprises: DVR uses 20 W when in stand-by.
Cons: Will block the other (top) power plug on the dual plug home outlet.
Other Thoughts: Very useful device. Worth every dollar spent!

Light?

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This thing works great. It really has come in handy.
Cons: A backlight would have helped for outlets that are behind desks and other dark places.
A battery backup would also help so that it doesn't reset when you unplug it.

Very Handy!

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Simple to use, reports on several different aspects of power use, works with a UPS.
Cons: Can be hard to get to to read, use a flashlight if you need to.
Other Thoughts: Handy gadget to have around the house. Using it to get a feel for how much power is used by different electrical and electronic items around the house is an eye opener!

Where it's helped me out the best is determining how efficient the computer power supplies are, and this makes an BIG difference when spec'ing out a UPS for you system.

If the power supply doesn't have Active PFC then you may be drawing twice as much power as you need to run the computer (the extra power is being wasted as heat). So with a lower PFC (in my case 0.62), to run your computer for 10 minutes after a power failure you would need a UPS with a higher rating (say a 800-1000VA rated UPS).

A computer power supply with a PFC rating of 0.99 could run for 10 minutes after a power failure with a lower rated UPS (say a 500-600VA rated UPS), saving you tons of $$ in buying a cheaper UPS.

Yet the rest of the computer hasn't changed, only the power supply! There are several good websites on VA rating and PFC.

Tech Level Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: not sure.
Cons: Voltage shows up wrong! We got 2 units and both are off in terms of voltage, mine shows 175 volts!! that is just not true, i tried multiple locations, there is no way that voltage is at 175V. The other one was a bit better but still off showing voltage at 125 which is still too high.
