SANGEAN - HD Radio / FM-Stereo / AM Set Top Box (HDT-1X)

Pros: Excellent Item Design & Price

Cons: High Motherboard audio, button, & display failure rates. Fortunately, my unit failed within a few days so I got my money bacjk.

Other Thoughts: Being a lifelong ShortWave Radio Enthusiast, I am familiar with Sangean products. This Taiwanese company has two basic divisions, one for emerging markets Asia and a high end one for the USA and other developed economies. Higher end Sangean multi-band radios are made for USA market. Small radios are made for Asia. Repeatedly, I've found the small Sangeans are exceptionally well made and work for years. The higher end models, made since 1990, usually work no more than a year or two beyond warranty. Failure is usually audio, display, and buttons. With radios they made under CCrane brand, display failure was common, a fatal flaw as owners were left tuning in stations "blindly". Like Sony of Japan, Sangean was a cold war era U.S. Corporation startup. Also, like Sony Sangean learned US built-in post warranty failures and once they were a major recognized brand applied engineered obsolescence aggressively.

Pros: Superb. I didn't even know AM stations have HD side bands.

Cons: LED below the power button is ON when the unit is off. What's with that? Display is either rather bright or too dim.

Other Thoughts: Wish the unit had a remote control port on the rear so I can do fancy stuff like spin the antenna to the station selected.

Pros: Worked as expected. Hooked up to a FM/VHF/UHF antenna - now used solely for FM reception - distributed to various other off air recievers.

Cons: FM receiver totally quit working. No output, no reception indicated per integrated SS meter. Very disappointed with the latent failure. I suggest you stay away from purchasing this unit. I read in the reviews this kind of failure was infant, as well.

Other Thoughts: Intersting to note - at some point, the clock failed to keep accurate time. I suspect this may have been an early indicator of an issue with the internal clock (moved off frequency) used in the PLL. Once the clock is too far off, the receiver will no longer work.

Pros: This is great. I bougt a side tuner to go with my AV reciever because I didnt want to have to pay for another HD) radio if I ever replace my amp. This is the way to go. DIG OPT out is excellent.
Easy set up. This HD) pulls in stations I couldnt get using a good antenna on the supplied dipole.
Easy to program.

Cons: AM antenna is std intem and could be better, barely listen to AM but would like an antenna that works well.
Cost is getting better...Dim feature hard to get to.

Other Thoughts: Please consider offering or suppling a better AM antenna and even an option to add a better FM antenna at a discount.
Wish you included extended warrantees as some sites do for no extra cost. This would show you (Newegg) believe in a products reliability.

Pros: Unt was good when it worked.

Cons: Unit stopped working on FM no audio at all. AM makes a loud popping noise. As usual these days everything is mass produced and QC does fall by the roadside.

Other Thoughts: Was a great price, but I guess the old saying is true you get what you pay for. I had excellent response from Newegg, however I will not buy another Sangean product ever again. Made in Japan, China etc. is just garbage.

Pros: What ghosts were to analog television, hiss and compressed fidelity were to analog radio (FM or AM). This digital tuner and the new digital broadcasting process open a new world of broadcast sound. At last, truly, radio can be "HIGH fidelity" (as the old lp's strove to be and cd's came much closer to being).

Cons: Read the brief owner's manual. The component face and remote are not exactly intuitive. But once you know how to make them work ...bliss!

Other Thoughts: Kudo's to Newegg.com for its web site, ordering process, wonderful pricing, careful packaging and prompt shipping. Others could learn well from you!

Pros: The silence between movements in the classical stations is absolutely stunning. No static, no hiss, no extra noises and even non-HD channels that I was never able to receive are now coming in at "SSI 17" on a scale of 1 to 18 (18 being the strongest signal).
The signal strength indicator/"SSI" is so helpful.
Song title, artist etc. info. is really nice! Don't know if I will use it but still, wows.

Cons: Although the screen dims, it never completely dis-illuminates (if that is a word). I may need to dig deeper in the instructions for a setting though.

Other Thoughts: I was trying to find reasons not to buy this, I am glad I went with my initial instinct to buy it. I can now sleep to classical music with no hissing and static. Just need to put something in front of the newly brightest audio device display in the room, oh well, its worth it.
Quality is better than FM and way nicer than XM (from the few systems I have heard). I may not be CD quality, but from my perspective it is the next best thing.

Pros: HD sounds GREAT! The optical output is perfect with my Onkyo 7.1 system. HDT-1X picks up more non-HD stations and with less distortion! The display works as well as I expected but with a few more features! Menus were easy to negotiate. Don't know why others complained. Just read the booklet.

Cons: No backup for the display(clock) when power is disrupted. We have lots of them. I wonder if our electrical problems will continue after PP&L jacks up the rates 40%?

Other Thoughts: I first ordered it from A**zon on 3-9-09. I was still waiting for it when I called and cancelled the order on 3-19-09. The same day 3-19-09 I ordered it from Newegg(for $40 less) It was at my door on 3-20-09!!!!! Newegg ROCKS! I will Never buy before checking with Newegg first!

Pros: Works well at tuning in HD stations with only a pair of rabbit ears (Saint Peter, MN). Static free music is a pleasure living 70 miles from a metro area. I can get some stations from the Twin Cities and some from Northfield and Mankato.

Cons: After 5 minutes of warm up the units hums loudly out through the case. I called Sangean and they said they were aware of the problem: defective power transformer. And that only a few units had been shipped with this defect. They suggested I return the unit to NewEgg or directly to Sangean. No offer to cover my shipping costs...

I'm surprised by the difference in coloration of the sound in HD mode for some stations. Seems thinner in the upper midrange (when compared with analog).
