5 out of 5 eggsRadio works very good

Pros: Radio works well as I expected. I like Sangean products this is my second radio so I am familiar with the way they operate. No problem with the batteries as I put rechargeable batteries in and the indicator showed them charging until full charge was obtained.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate at ~ 2 years since purchase:

Pros: Still working - and see prior review.

Cons: See prior review.

Other Thoughts: Raising to 4 stars.

The elderly non-tech all-day high volume radio listener recipient mentioned in my 2012 review was able to get used to a simple routine of plugging in to charge overnight every other day - so no longer an issue to use rechargeable batteries, as they never get too low.

Still sounds great - even after this hefty radio has been dropped to the floor (from a height of a couple of feet) at least 4 times.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound/Tuning. Poor useful battery life.

Pros: Great sound. Clear even at high volume. And loud for a single speaker. (Gives an impression as if it adds some bass to AM.) Some of the best tuning and signal locking of any radio used before. Built-in battery charger has not been tried.

Cons: Eats batteries. 6 AA. Possibly because of electronic tuning?
Starts failing when batteries are down to ~ 1.2 volts. Prior *standard* radios were noted to bring batteries down to 0.8 or 0.9 V before they were so bad as to be unlistenable. Either alkaline or rechargeable.

Other Thoughts: Would not purchase again for the non technical user who keeps radio on several hours per day AM-only at high volume.

A great radio for a tech savvy person who notes the battery display, and changes them promptly when down to two bars out of three. Or who can keep radio plugged in enough to use the built-in battery charger.

Totally guessing the "smart" technology shuts things down at 1.2V - like DTV either is perfect or "no signal". Right now the 2000mAh Ni-MH 6xAAs used, need to be changed out after 3-4 days of use at the usage levels described. Set at either alkaline or rechargeable.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good AM radio.

Pros: Excellent AM reception and audio.
Handy built in battery charger.

Cons: Nothing of any significance.

Other Thoughts: Really good AM reception in my basement apartment. AM reproduction of human voice is excellent. FM is reasonable for a small mono speaker. Would like a manual control for the backlight instead of auto on and auto off based on what it thinks it should do. At the current Newegg sale price, easily a best buy.

5 out of 5 eggsupdate

Pros: See other

Cons: See other

Other Thoughts: Update: I contacted Sangean by email and got an immediate request to call a product manager. Turns out it was a bad PowerEx battery - right out of the box. I should have contacted them.
I'm very fond of Sangean products. It was a relief to figure out it wasn't a flaw of the radio.

3 out of 5 eggsgood, but...

Pros: Very nice little kitchen radio. The built-in recharger is a nice feature.

Cons: Discharges batteries in a few weeks _when OFF_. I'm using 6 new PowerEx 2700 mAh batteries. I'd expect it to run a few weeks of playing time. Off time should be much longer.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to try to contact Sangean about this.

5 out of 5 eggsBest tuner under $100

Pros: Our CCrane $150 radio got face cancer and eventually failed, so I was in the market for a replacement radio that could pull in our very weak KPBS station here in San Diego. After reading many reviews, I bought TWO of these for myself and for my 80-yr old mom. Excellent AM an FM digital tuner. Very good sound for such a small speaker. Convenient self-charging design (when used with NiMh batteries);

Cons: The alarm clark is difficult to activate, and difficult to disable. Make sure not to lose the manual, or keep a PDF copy of the manual for this purpose.

Other Thoughts: I wish they offered it in a metal version, like the excellent SONY portable radios of the 70's. The quality and performance of this radio merit a higher-quality enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat radio

Pros: What everyone else says. Battery life is pretty impressive. I run this for about 45 mins a day and at a moderate volume. At times the volume is high enough to hear over a hair dryer. I use six rechargeable AA 2500mAh batteries and have not had to recharge them for 2 months.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: This replaced my bathroom radio and the sound quality beats the past units I've had.

I have not used the built-in charger because I have a POWEREX MH-C90000 charger.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent buy for the $$$

Pros: Good quality built, great sound and easy to use. Well design through out and good looking unit.

Cons: None that I can find

Other Thoughts: I'll be able to pull in channels that I could not tuned in with other radios. I live in deep South OC, CA so with this unit, I'll be able to get all channels broadcast from LA as well as SD metropolitan area which is great (more selections available for me)
