AVBAR8 Applications
AVBAR8 Feature Focus
Isolated Filter Banks

Improved Component Performance

Various electrical and radio sources can cause disruptive interference on the AC line. This line noise is a common cause of incremental hardware damage, data corruption and audio/video performance problems. The AVBAR8 incorporates exclusive Isobar technology, including isolated filter banks, to eliminate interference between connected components, plus full EMI/RFI line noise filtering, to ensure peak audio and video performance.

Powerful AC Line Surge Suppression

A single power surge has the potential to seriously damage or destroy sensitive A/V components. Even a minor surge can cause incremental damage that degrades performance and shortens component lifespans. The AVBAR8 features the highest surge protection rating in its class—3134 joules of surge suppression to prevent even the strongest surges from damaging your valuable electronics.

Protection on Every Connection

In addition to AC line protection, the AVBAR8 includes built-in RJ11 jacks to prevent surges from damaging your modem/fax/phone equipment (six-foot telephone cord included), built-in RJ45 jacks to prevent surges from damaging 10BT equipment on Ethernet and other network connections (six-foot network cable included) and built-in gold Type F coax jacks to prevent surges from damaging your cable/satellite equipment (digital broadband quality accommodates 2.2GHz bandwidth; six-foot coax cable included).

Built-In Diagnostic Capabilities

Three diagnostic LEDs (GROUNDED, PROTECTED & POWER) show power and protection status. An illuminated master switch provides one-touch power control over all components.

Ultimate Peace of Mind

The AVBAR8 comes with a lifetime product warranty plus $500,000 Ultimate Lifetime Insurance (USA/Canada only) covering connected components against surge damage—for life.

5 out of 5 eggsTripplite fan

Pros: These items are really insurance against damage so no clue how good it is till catastrophe strikes.Best you can do is buy a good brand name with highest specs you can afford..I've used many Tripplite products over the years and when it comes to something electrical Tripplite is what I buy. Using my power meter my electiric is rock solid stable. coming from recepticles in suppressor. It isn't going into it though.T.V ,audio great. No motor,RFI,EMI interference.

Cons: It isn't very good company! Just sits there NOT saying 1 word.Come to think of it if my ex. was a silent suppressor?????????????

Other Thoughts: Tripplite is a premium brand and so are prices. Look for sales promotions.A great suppressor seems expensive but how much did all your electronics cost?Think about depreciated replacement from insurance. Then think of Tripplite's warranty. Or better yet, your electronics NOT damaged in first place. Peace.

5 out of 5 eggsTripplite AVBAR8

Pros: I just bought a second one; the first has been in service over two years and survived more than a dozen power outages, including due to nearby lightening strikes. I've owned a number of Tripplite products over the years and, especially their IsoBar series of protectors, I just plain rely on them as the minimum protection to get whenever I can afford it.

The 140 V clamping voltage is of particular note, as is the under 1 nanosecond response. Also, the line noise reduction/filtering is a great bonus.

Tripplite IsoBars are legendary for their ability to protect and to survive. It takes a very serious surge to burn your Tripplite out, so it very often protects you over and over again before giving it up, and will usually protect your equipment on that one last surge that finally does in the Tripplite,

Cons: Come on, Tripplite!!!

You need to upgrade these to handle full duplex 1 Gbit ethernet. At least. Maybe even design for 10 Gbit at this point since it's here and becoming more prevalent.

The coax connectors are very badly placed. There is room to redesign this product so that there is no interference with power adapters. You also got stingy on the space allowed for the regular plugs. You can certainly put 2 or 3 more millimeters between them and make the product vastly more user friendly.

The power switch is located too closely to a plug; it's far too easy to accidentally flip it while plugging/unplugging devices, especially when the protector is located behind a desk or multimedia cabinet and you can't see exactly what you are doing.

No eggs off. I knew what I was buying before I hit purchase .. but, seriously, these minor tweaks should have been changed years ago.

Other Thoughts: Take this base design and tweak it specifically for computer equipment ... which is what I use this for even though it's for TV/stereo.

Maybe place two of the sockets on the side of the unit to free up more space on top for bulky plugs and power adapters.

5 out of 5 eggsTripplite AVBAR8

Pros: EXCELLENT product quality, especially metal case and most important, the high JOULE rating and isolation across outlets. The quick nano section clamp on time is super. If you are serious about surge protection, this is the product to buy. Tripplite makes quality, durable products.

Cons: I did not buy enough units when they were on sale. Be assured, next time this AVBAR8 goes on sale I will buy.

Other Thoughts: Good effective surge protection begins at 3000 joules and above. The bare bones minimum is 2600 joules.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent so far!

Pros: Do what it is supposed to do, no bells or whistles. I've hade this surge suppressor for over 6 months now, got it; I have plugged in it my 40" HDTV, XBox 360 and my 5.1ch home theater, plus a six plug outlet strip for my laptop and a couple of chargers, this way the surge suppressor is hidden and I don't have to even touch it (or see it); sometimes I completely forget that it is sitting there, protecting all of my stuff.
By now, it has seen it's fair share of blackouts, and I have to say, no problems at all with my setup or any component in it.
A piece of equipment like this is essential for protecting your expensive tech stuff, you might end up regretting that you don't have one eventually.

Cons: The undiscounted price.
The size of it, it's a bit bulky.

Other Thoughts: I got this on offer for $37.53 dollars, and at that price you cannot go wrong. I don't know about the original $78 price; but for the peace of mind I get knowing that my hardware is safe, I believe it is a good investment, there are cheaper options though.

5 out of 5 eggsNow that's a Surge Suppressor

Pros: Has RJ45 network/Ethernet protection
Has all the plug-in protection you could need
All of the features anyone could need

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This appears to be the "cadillac" of surge suppressors. I can't imagine a plug that this does'nt support.

1 out of 5 eggsEthernet only 10/100

Pros: Well, I'm sure it is going to work well for all of the products I plugged in to the power.

Cons: A couple things, starting with the least important.

1. The plugin itself is one of those tilted half way plugs which is fine in a lot of cases, but in this case I needed to plug it in to a suppressed outlet and due to the tilted plug I had to push very hard and basically bend part of the plastic to get it connected. I still don't think it is 100% in, probably closer to 90 or 95%. This isn't a problem for the huge majority of people so I'm not too upset about it, but thought I would mention it in case others have the same type of setup.

2. The coax ports stick up too high. If you have one of those plugs that take up room sideways(which are great for the normal power strips) the only place to out them without covering up another outlet on this is the end by the coax hookups. The problem is that they stick up too high to allow it too happen. Guess we're just left covering up an outlet again, which is what this type is supposed to avoid.

3. On the subject of covering them up. Not only are there issues with the sideways plugs covering up other outlets, but if you have a circumstance where you are plugging in any sort of bulky plugs, don't try doing it next to each other. There isn't enough room for that either. Depending on what you are plugging in this could be a pretty big problem, such as in my case. One of the main reasons I bought this was so I can plug in more amps for my whole house audio system. Each one has a somewhat bulky plug and I ended up having to plug the two in separate instead of next to each other. Now the only thing I can plug in between them is a standard plug. That along with the aforementioned sideways plug issue has left me with no more room to plug any more of these in. Once again defeating the whole purpose.

4. And this is the biggest problem by far. The network port's are only 10/100. This is mentioned absolutely no where on this site, and nowhere on the box. The only place it is mentioned at all is on one of the very small papers inside the box as a *footnote. This makes the ethernet protection virtually useless for pretty much anyone since very few people deeming their network important enough to protect are going to be running on 100mbps.

Other Thoughts: It still boggles my mind that something as important as the network speed can not even be mentioned on the site, or the box. It is insanely important. There is no excuse for it.

As far as room. Considering that this was supposed to be designed to allow someone to not have issues plugging in various types of plugs, it appears that all they did was just make the outlet's sideways and space them a little bit, and not do any actual real world testing to see how things would fit. I mean, why did they even bother if they were still going to make it too cramped to plugin? Did they actually pay engineers to design this. Pretty inexcusable.

In the end though, I am sure it will protect my things that I actually was able to plug in to it, and considering that I got it for about 80% off and not anywhere near the full price so I can't cry too much. Anywhere near full price it isn't worth it though.

3 out of 5 eggsTripplite AVBAR8

Pros: Inexpensive and probably good for 90% of the people out there who have a "home theater system". Good value for the money if you can get it for the Shell Shocker deal at $49.99. By description, it sounds well made, sturdy, and with some ergonomics in mind. Situating the plugs so that you don't lose one that gets covered up by another plug is a great idea and one that is hard to find at this price point ($49).

Cons: My con is this and it is only this and it just affects the other 10% of people out there who may not be aware of this. I do not have what you would call a traditional home theater system. I have a 2 channel stereo system to which I eventually added a 42" Plasma TV (from Newegg, thanks!) and this two channel stereo system is powered by a Krell KSA-250. That says it all right there. I would never dream of limiting the current draw of my amp because of a transient, 6 millisecond drop below 2 ohms from my speakers that the Krell will handle easily but that is going to throw the breakers on this model of Tripplite. Tripplite DOES make isobars that will handle things like that but they are much more expensive. I just felt there should be one review out of five that lets people know this. Do I own this model? No. But I don't have to get polio to know that I don't WANT to get it. Same thing here.

Manufacturer Response:

The AVBAR8 is a Tripp Lite ISOBAR Series Surge Suppressor and has a circuit breaker set for 12amps. Based on your comments, it seems you are using a unique high powered piece of equipment, which appears to have a specification of 12amps of continuous draw up to 35amps. You are correct that there could be times when the connected equipment could spike and draw beyond the 12amps and that would pop the breaker on the AVBAR8. Please feel free to contact Tripp Lite’s Chicago-based Tech Support Team at 773-869-1234 and they would be happy to size a surge specific to your application requirements.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive

Pros: Heavy metal construction. Protects coax, RJ-11, and RJ-45 outlets. Even comes with CAT6 cable. Reduces noise level which is great for prolonging the life of my vintage game consoles. Also comes with 3 outlet covers.

Cons: Only comes with 3 outlet covers. Ironically I only use 5 outlets so it's not a problem for me. But why only 3?

Other Thoughts: What other surge protector comes with CAT6 cable?

5 out of 5 eggsNeeded Protection from Storms

Pros: High surge protection rating.
Suitable for High Speed Cable.
Enough ports to protect everything.

Cons: None so far. If it works as advertised.

Other Thoughts: Thunder/lightening storm blew out all the Ethernet ports on: cable modem, wireless router, and desktop computer attached to router via Ethernet.
After much research I found this unit which is rated for the bandwidth of cable plus has high surge protection. I replaced all the burned out equipment except the motherboard (which is next).
Hope this works then next time storm comes around.....
