Klipsch WB-14 Icon – W Series Espresso Bookshelf/Surround Speaker - Pair

  • Crossover Frequency: 2400Hz
  • Premium titanium tweeter
  • Fiberglass woofer
ICON Loading...

The WB-14 is for those who want home theater or stereo speakers that look as good as they sound. Compared to traditional bookshelf speakers, Klipsch WB-14 takes up less space while still delivering dynamic and detailed sound. It employees the new XT Tractrix Horn design that delivers a wider dispersion pattern—80 x 80 degrees—than a traditional Klipsch Tractrix Horn. In the XT design, Klipsch added “graceful bumps” to the horn so its flare isn’t quite as fast. This forces the sound wave that is traveling down the length of the horn to stay in contact with the horn walls. As long as you can fully illuminate the internal volume of the horn consistently at all frequencies, the more consistent the horn dispersion will be.

  • newegg Slim Stature The Klipsch WB-14 bookshelf speaker features a space-saving, slim design for a perfect match with your flat-panel TV, plasma monitors and other thin-line home cinema components. The all-new proprietary XT Tractrix Horn technology allows the slim Icon W speakers to deliver a wider sound field, while also providing more latitude in placement.
  • newegg Exceptional Sound Quality The Klipsch WB-14 bookshelf speaker boasts a 4.5" high-output, fiberglass cone woofer, a 1" titanium diaphragm compression driver mated to a 3.75" 80 x 80 round Tractrix horn to deliver precise highs and amazing lows for an immersive listening experience. Traditional wide dispersion horns have fast expansion rates (or taper rates) resulting in large “mouths” and shallow depths - the root cause of the dispersion uniformity. The XT engineering takes Klipsch’s time-proven philosophy to new heights by adding “graceful bumps” to the horn, delivering low distortion with wide consistent soundstage.
  • newegg Magnetically Shielded Using magnetic grille with no visible fasteners on baffle, the magnetically-shielded Klipsch WB-14 can be put at any proximity to display devices such as TVs and LCD monitors without loss of sound quality caused by interference. Threaded insert allows for easy wall mounting.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Perfect footprint, beautiful no-nonsense cabinet, great sound (from computer with high end audio card), not tested on my home audiophile system. I have driven these hard while partying... hard... and they have tolerated my abuse. Very crankable. Using 200 wpc old school Yamaha powerhouse to power. Supplemented with a stout powered subwoofer, but they receive the full audio dynamic range (not crossed over). Very pleased.

Cons: Zip... for my usage criteria

Other Thoughts: I highly doubt that there is much competition in the $200 price range I bought these at.

5 out of 5 eggsIcon WB-14

Pros: These speakers are definitely winners and a must own for those looking for great sound and overall best value. They have the looks and certainly, the power to back it up. The clarity these bookshelves produce is second to none. The soundstage they produce is quite impressive, given their small footprint. I couldn't be any happier with this purchase. I'm really pleased with these speakers. Outstanding value for sure.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Speakers

Pros: - Very clear at low volumes and do a solid job in a rear surround role
- Icon W exterior is beautiful (WAF 9.5)
- The price!! Picked them up for $160 and glad I did. Even at the regular price these are still a bargain
- Compliment the sound of my WF-34's and my WC-24 perfectly

Cons: None really. Wall mounting wasn't as easy as expected but I gt over that.

Other Thoughts: I have these as my rears in a 5.1 setup and they sound great. I have them wall mounted with custom built mounts because all other mounts sagged under the weight of these things. No big deal, it was a nice little project. Once I get some true Klipsch surrounds these will move to either a front presence position or the rear sides. Either way I'm sure these speakers will perform to my liking.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Product

Pros: Customer support from Klipsch – outstanding
Quality of construction – real wood – absolutely beautiful
Sound quality – these are surrounds – I use for rear effects – they are perfect
Magnetic grilles

Cons: None with the product. I paid more than they are listed for now – but nitpicking here, not worth dropping an egg.

Other Thoughts: I played a stereo audio source to just these speakers and they are indeed good for the size. I have a Vandersteen sub and would never expect bass from any other speaker in my system. But when driven with 100W Carver, I was pleasantly surprised at the bass these did put out.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall but whatta delivery!

Pros: Forget that the cabinet is as nice as you will ever see for a moment, and let me tell you about what's important... The sound... So long as you have a sub, you will not be disappointed. The highs are crisp and clean and the mids have great depth for both music and movies. You can have a million dollar receiver but if you don't have quality speakers it won't matter. I went from a Boston Accoustics satellite system to these and I didn't know what I was missing. And for $200! Whatta deal!

Cons: Absolutely nothing.

Other Thoughts: I'm new to Newegg but they came thru with the great price and free, fast shipping. Such a good experience I treated myself to the matching center channel speaker.

5 out of 5 eggsJust right

Pros: I ordered two pairs of these to replace my front and rear speakers in my home theater because my Kenwood speakers were starting to show their age. I hooked them up, turned on some music and a tear almost came to my eye. They sounded so much better than my Kenwood speakers did and I haven't even broken them in yet! They are very clear and have a very flat overall frequency response, (to my ear at least) I haven't had to touch my equalizer at all, just kept everything at +0dB.

These speakers are perfect for movies and I have not found any better speakers for games at this price point. Battle Field 3 is blow you away awesome with these speakers!! I highly recommend them for games!

Night and day from my old kenwood bookshelf speakers, I now know what mid-bass sounds like.

Cons: These speakers are very "bright" when it comes to music as are most Klipsch speakers. Just the nature of the horn loaded tweeter design. I prefer a "warmer" speaker when it comes to music, but I bought these specifically for my home theater for games/movies and not necessarily for music. These are no where near as bright as most of the reference series line of Klipsch speakers, so I can deal with them for music. The Icon series aren't quite as "in your face" as other Klipsch speakers either. I would however not recommend these for a music only setup. To quote someone from the Klipsch forums, "Klipsch speakers will rip your head off."

Other Thoughts: If you have never heard high end speakers or own high end speakers, these will likely be quite an upgrade, but they can't compete with some of the higher end speakers that I have had the chance to hear (I just couldn't afford to buy the more expensive speakers). I am into my second week or so with these speakers and they are only just starting to break in, from what I have read in a few forums, the Icon speakers take a little longer than your average speaker to fully break in. Most speakers will break in within 3-30hours or so, but I have seen nearly 100 hours for these to break in fully, only time will tell though. It is a shame that 2011 was the last production year for these.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: I have these for my computer setup powered by an onkyo 125x2 stand alone amp the sound great after a little break in time. The horns sound great out of the box! the 4" midbass take a little work out to get there full potential. The low end needs a sub to complement but sound pretty darn good without.

Cons: For a speaker with 4" midbass I have no complaints.

Other Thoughts: I have worked in the mid to high end audio for over 10 years and these are not the best but not far off the bar. They do what I want my computer setup to do. (Very efficent but you can never deliver too much clean power!)

4 out of 5 eggsBeautiful, crisp, lack warmth

Pros: Beatiful finished cabinets.
Crisp, clear, sound with good detail. I've listened to jazz, rock, blues, country and I haven't found anything they couldn't handle.
Good sound dispersion (you can move around the room and still hear the stereo separation).
Efficient (it doesn't take a lot of power to drive these) and can fill a small/medium room easily.

Cons: Lacks "warmth".
Dust magnet.

Other Thoughts: I've had these speakers for about 3 months and I was hoping that they'd mellow out but they haven't. This is subjective, but I prefer a mellower, warmer sound. These are very bright. I've had Klipsch speakers before, a pair of original Heresy and the Promedia 2.1 computer speakers, and the WB-14s are brighter and more forward than either of them. The WB-14s are in my living room (about 15x30) and fill it easily. I can't comment on how they are in a home theater, as I only use them for music. Still haven't decided if I'll keep them and learn to live with them, add a sub-woofer, or just replace them at some point. For now, though, they look beautiful. They are, however, a dust magnet (I think it's the PU finish) and need to be dusted daily.
A note on the color: I have the cabernet color, and while I was concerned that it would be too red, the actual color is not as red as the pictures show. It's somewhere between cherry and mahogany.
Note: 4 star rating is based on the sale price.

4 out of 5 eggsPower, Detail, Emotion - 2 out of 3

Pros: I love the look of these speakers and they can be played as loud as I would ever want them to. They are also just the right size for me. At current prices of less than $200/pair, they are a really good deal.

Cons: The sound, while good, is not exceptional. As another reviewer has recently stated, I find they don't produce the nuances of the music as I had hoped and previously experienced with other speakers.

Other Thoughts: I have owned these bookshelf speakers for several months now. I also have the matching center channel (WC24) along with the smaller towers (WF34). At the discounted prices I paid, I think they are a good deal for their combination of looks and sound and I don't regret getting the whole set. But based on the full retail price across the 'W' line, I was expecting better sound than these put out.
