1 out of 5 eggsMoney wasted

    Pros: 0

Cons: Cheap casing, non-refundable, volume through this device is more than cut in half, expensive as hell, constantly drawing power

Other Thoughts: Feeling very scammed after purchasing this awful product

4 out of 5 eggsIt works, but......

Pros: It converts optical digital stereo to analog stereo beautifully!

Cons: The description for this unit could be a little clearer to those of us who have never had ANY experience with Optical Audio.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit only to find out after hooking it up I had purchased the wrong converter. I needed something to connect our newly purchased LG 55LW6500 TV to our 20 year old Kenwood AMP. The LG TV is Optical Audio Out only. No Analog. The Kenwood is Analog Audio In only. No Optical. If you input a stereo signal into this converter, you'll get a nice stereo signal out. If you input a Dolby 5.1 signal into this converter, you will get nothing but SILENCE out. This IS NOT the unit you need if you want to connect your new Optical Audio Out TV to your legacy stereo equipment. For that you need the Gefen GTVDD2AA. Be sure you purchase the correct unit. The unit itself deserves 5 stars. I'm knocking one off only because the description didn't make it a little more clearer what this converter would and WOULD NOT do. I hope this clears up a little confusion for the next guy.

    3 out of 5 eggsResearch

Pros: It lights up when I plug it in.

    Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to connect my new plasma tv (with only optical audio out) to my 10+ year old receiver (with no optical input). I did not realize that the tv only outputs Dolby encoded audio. This adapter does not decode Dolby. This item is non refundable and was an expensive mistake on my behalf. Be thorough in your research!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Mounted the unit to the back of the LCD TV with 1/4" thick double stickly tape. Plugged the fibre cable from the TV monitor output to the D/A adapter. Connected a Sennheiser cordless wireless stereo headphone system (RS120) to the output and tuned into clear stereo sound. Four floors down the condo building, the sound was static free and clear. (the condo is wood/glass/sheetrock construction) Will be buying another D/A unit for a second place.

Cons: Yes, the fibre cable can be fussy. You just have to make sure the glass cable is secured to lessen its spring tension on the plug outlets.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product, defective TOSLINK Cable

Pros: Works as advertised. Be sure you're able to provide 2-channel LPCM input to the converter. My Vizio TV provides a "Forced PCM" audio output option in the TV configuration menu which works perfectly with this. Audio quality is excellent.

Cons: Took me a while to figure out that the included TOSLINK-to-TOSLINK optical cable was defective. Got lucky when I was about to give up and tried another cable that I had.

Other Thoughts: In my case, I had to remove the clear plastic tip covers on each TOSLINK connector (each end of the optical cable) for a better snap-in fit. Thanks for this tip from another reviewer.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great but!

Pros: Hooked it up and it sounded great through my Bose Cinimate, can understand why TV makers are dropping the analog output.

Cons: Build quality is cheap, like others have commented, cable to the TV clicked in place, not to the converter. Down the road that may be an issue.

    5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: I use this device to connect 2 sound boards together. I used to do this and had all kinds of audio hissing and so forth. Now I connect a Gefen audio->digital and then use this Gefen digital->audio. It is a great combination.

    Cons: -

Other Thoughts: Note: Some of the people that bought this and its "sister" component report having problems making the fiber cables secure. Take the little clear plastic caps off the fiber ends. The ends will then lock and be secure.

2 out of 5 eggsIt works, but.....

Pros: Works to convert digital optical to analog as advertised.

Cons: Does not convert digital audio from HD television channels to analog. Only works when I'm on analog stations.

Optical-in port is sloppy loose in the box, but it works.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this item to convert optical out on my new TV to analog L/R out to my stereo. It works fine for analog TV channels, but from what I understand HD channels use a digital 5.1 output which cannot be converted by this device. So, I get sound but only when I'm on an analog station. To get sound on all channels I think you will need the more expensive GTVDD2AA GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder which supports digital 5.1. There really should be more disclaimers/warning in the specifications for novice/ignorant audio people (like me). 2 eggs for function, minus 3 eggs for failure to warn and failure to meet my needs.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: It works as advertised. I have a Direct TV HD Box, New Insignia LED 32" and a First Gen Bose CineMate 2.1 Sound setup. I had a sound lag issue when i got the TV from the Direct TV box using the Analog hookup from the Direct TV to Bose setup. Basically it was the TV's fault, but there was no place to adjust the sound delay either on the Direct TV box or the Insigna TV. The TV had a SPDIF Optical out. So i got the Gefen, ran the optical out from the TV to the Gefen then to the Bose.

Didn't work at first, there was still a sound lag from the TV. So I factory reset the Direct TV, and now it works great! (BTW, factory resetting the Direct TV box still didn't fix the previous problem of analog sound lag with the Direct TV to Bose)

Cons: Requires a 5v plug (Included in box)

Other Thoughts: Came with a Optical cable. This is a great cheap solution to make your older sound equipment (Analog) play nice with the optical out features many newer TV's come with today. It kept me from either buying a Receiver, or a Newer (Optical Compatible) sound system.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but...

Pros: Does what it's supposed to: converts TOSlink digital to analog audio, which is what I needed to lash a wireless headset together to a Mac Pro with decent sound quality.

Cons: Absolute awful assembly quality. You're paying for the circuitry. The supplied TOSlink cable doesn't even lock into the TOSlink port; I had to lash the whole thing together with electrical tape.
