2 out of 5 eggsCracks, hisses, and pops

Pros: Decent satellite speakers: good build quality, ok dynamic range.

Cons: The subwoofer. I'm guessing the power supply? When set to auto, which is where I've always set the sub (it comes on when a signal is present, then goes into standby after your movie/album/etc.) it will crackle, hiss, and pop. Without a signal present. You can unplug the signal cable and they still persist. Tried all settings, no dice, I'm guessing they cheaped out on the power supply and it sends completely unfiltered power to the amplifier that's built onto the sub.

Other Thoughts: I guess there's a reason these were bundled free with my Aventage receiver. I'm sure that I could replace the power supply the subwoofer shipped with to make it tolerable. I have no interest in doing so.

As it is, I'm using the center because it takes up so little room and sounds clear, and the satellites as surround speakers in a 7.2 setup. I've ordered another subwoofer to replace this one.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor to terrible sub-woofer electronics

Pros: Good satellites

Cons: Poor sub-woofer electronics.
Terrible support policy!

Other Thoughts: Two to three months ago my uncle bought me this ML-2 set for my home theater setup. Combined with the other components, cables, player and HT-PC I set on my way happy and satisfied that all is good.

Indeed everything worked fine and in the occasional times when my wife and I watched movies it was a very high level of sound. The satellites are very good, crisp and the bass (after tuning) is clear and un-muddy.

A week ago I started noticing cracking sounds coming from the sub-woofer. They were minor at start and I suspected something is causing noise into the sub's cable. As time went by these cracking sounds (like a TV's no-signal noise sound) started getting launder and louder. I stopped the show, disconnected the signal cable from the receiver (its got only power now), and the cracking goes on. Loud! And to be clear - I have a very high end surge protector + noise canceler for my setup.

This went on for several hours and days, until I stopped using the sub with great frustration.

I opened the warranty and looked for service options available to me - and here lies the catch - my uncle lives in the US, my wife and I live in Toronto. NO SERVICE FOR US.

Terrible! Terrible! Terrible!

To replace the defective Martin Logan I now hunt for a new sub-woofer to complement my setup. I have no idea how much this is going to cost me, but one thing is certain: I will never touch another Martin Logan product.

Good satellites.
Poor sub-woofer electronics.
Terrible support!

--- Update May/1/2013 ---
We've received a reply from customer service, stating this is a problem with their [quote] "backplate electronics", and confirming they have a service partner to help us: Plurison.

"Yes - they can fix this sub and the nightmare will be over" we thought. Wrong: [quote] "...take the entire subwoofer to our Canada service partner to have the sub fixed on your own dime". Get it? Their partner - Your own dime. Wow. Amazing policy.

Now looking for a new sub-woofer.

4 out of 5 eggsGood price clear sound

Pros: Price is right if you get it on sale for 250 probably would not pay more. Nice clear sound in a smaller (20x20) room. Definitely a step up from all in one Pioneer surround. It does reproduce sound fairly clear and I find myself judging quality of program rather than speakers a lot of times. Larger driver size in the center speaker than many 5.1 sets in a similar price range.

Cons: Packaging. Perhaps the whole lot was damaged before and now it's sold with a discount. Seems like a lot of ppl complain about bad packaging. Mine had a broken leg on the sub. Mounting options for satellites aren't that great.

Other Thoughts: I don't care for big, loud earth shaking or anything like that and I haven't tried cranking it up yet. I do have a studio sound downstairs for that and I occasionally mix live gigs where it gets crazy loud... Paired to Onkyo 616.

4 out of 5 eggsOutstanding customer service.

Pros: This MLT-2 will blow you away if you properly set up your receiver. I did have one of my speakers go bad due to user negligence. MLT-2 sent me another speaker without any question, and it was shipped extremely fast. I didn't have to pay to ship anything back or anything. If you need a set that you can rely on, this is an A+ company in my book.

Cons: I'd love to see it come with banana clips =) But that aside, I docked an egg because the price. I would also like the ability to more finely tune the sub. The price seems a bit harsh, but if you want to buy great customer service go for it!

Other Thoughts: My guests have never complained, only my neighbors.

5 out of 5 eggsThese speakers rock!

Pros: The mids and highs are terrific. The bass is extremely good. I had seen reviews that state aftera couple of months the sound quality drops. I will have to wait and see but these speakers paired with my Sony STRDN1030 sound great. I couldn't ask for a better sounding system for the money.

Cons: I haven't got any, but I am also not a pro at sound systems. I have the speakers I wanted and the receiver I wanted and it matches up great.

Other Thoughts: I searched all kinds of reviews and looked on CNET and different sites like that before settling on these speakers. I was caught between these and the Energy Take speakers. I chose these and I am not dissatisfied. They sound awesome and the bass is absolutely stunning. Also, it is one of the few 5.1 packages that have a 10" woofer.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat until the sub started popping.

Pros: Inexpensive, sounded great initially.

Cons: Subwoofer started making static/popping noises almost exactly 1 year after purchase. Original purchase was 2/24/2012, and popping started on 3/16/2013. Static/popping persists after removing source. Static/popping prevents the sub from going into power save mode.
Sub was never turned beyond 30% volume, and was kept at 60Hz cutoff. The rest of the speakers still seem to be fine.

Other Thoughts: I loved this set when I got it. The popping is really awful, and it manifested extremely suddenly. As mentioned by others, I'm going to replace the sub with one from another manufacturer, instead of spending the $100 to ship it back for a replacement. This should be covered completely by the manufacturer, since it seems to affect every single unit eventually.

2 out of 5 eggsBlah.. Small=wee

Pros: Compact speaker system that should fit small rooms well.

Cons: Too small for my application. Weak mid-range and sub-woofer.

Other Thoughts: I purchased these after reading favorable reviews from other owners. I was looking to displace my larger speakers for the sake of satisfying the wife and making the space look cleaner. I was happy with the physical size, but immediately disappointed at the quality of sound. My room is large (30'x24'x24'). The mids are lacking and the sub was not hacking it no matter where I placed it. I had a ARS-500 hanging around, so I put that to use. The replacement sub filled the space nicely and the speakers broke in. They are OK as a system but what happened is I moved the 'Real' system to the man cave. Overall I would recommend these to Ipod users looking for better presence, but not to the audiophile and definitely not in a large space. If you do prepare to be underwhelmed.
