5 out of 5 eggsPerfect solution for what we needed

Pros: Portable, stylish, user-friendly operation, supports many popular media formats, confirmed to support at least a 750GB hard drive, good price for the features and potential, good documentation, regular firmware updates, works as a complete replacement to fragile (and prone to scratch) dvds, several video/audio output options

Cons: Doesn't support wmv, it isn't possible to watch video while the usb cable is plugged in, need to buy the car kit separately, no network capabilities

Other Thoughts: I chose this over a traditional media center extender in our kids' room because we can take it on trips & use in the car (providing a monitor & car kit is purchased). The only drawback is that most of our kiddy shows are in wmv format, which this media player doesn't support (we're forced to use wmv with our old xbox media center extender in the family room until I get up the nerve to try a softmod of xbmc). Not a huge deal....as I can simply use the original VOB file for the Mvix player before we convert it to wmv for the xbox. Simply drag/drop media files to the Mvix Drive, disconnect from your PC, plug into your TV and enjoy. Their newest media player (mx-760HD) supports wmv and much more....but it was out of our budget. Overall a fantastic buy and I highly recommend. I no longer plan on buying a portable DVD player for the kids this xmas.

5 out of 5 eggscool little gizmo!

Pros: Every movie has played flawless! As for the hard drive problems some reviewers have noted---go to the product's web sight---they list these issues and thier recommended HDs that work best. An informed consumer is always a happy consumer.

Cons: The user manual could use some work. But that does not detract from the product. So I still give it a 5.

Other Thoughts: This product is not the best thing since sliced bread. It is not going to appeal to everyone. But it does EXACTLY what Mvix says it can do.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me

Pros: I've had this unit for over 6 months and play mainly DIVX avi. files on it. It won't play anything higher than DVD resolution but the upconversion to 1080i on my 42" HDTV looks very very good. Artifacting from the original files is still visible but not intrusive on a big screen. I use the optical audio output and many of these files contain a dolby digital track which plays back fine. I'm using a 500GB Maxtor drive in the unit with no problems. Support is very good with regular firmware updates on the website.

Cons: Came with the manual in Japanese only. I downloaded the English version from their website.

Other Thoughts: As long as you are not looking for Hi-Def playback this box does a fantastic job with divx and dvd files.

3 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital HD Problem

Pros: When it works, it is great (see my earlier review). Worked fine with a Seagate 320 HD.

Cons: I have run into the same problem as BF with a 500GB WD Caviar HD. Works fine when connected via USB. Searches HD forever when connected as video source, only responds to the case-mounted on/off switch. Can't even upgrade firmware in this state (if the firmware were to address the issue).

Other Thoughts: Fix of issue should be high priority for MVIX.

5 out of 5 eggsDevice Rocks!

Pros: People build HTPC's to do what this does. As the phrase goes "a fool and their money" Works better then I had expected.

Cons: Doesn't come pre-installed in my conversion van.

Other Thoughts: The reviewer "russ" obviously has no clue what he is talking about. That review should be removed since he was looking for an HD device. That being said.... I bought this primarily for my conversion van so my kids could watch movies and it only had a VHS. I plugged this into the aux inputs and now I'm going to hardwire it. I tried it out on my HDTV to check out the upconversion and it does a way better job of upconverting standard def movies then my Oppo DVD player, by leaps and bounds. Worth every penny and more. I'm buying the HD one for my home. Nothing else compares, how dare anybody try and compare this with a Microsuck product.

3 out of 5 eggsDrive Compatibility

Pros: Great concept. And plays all the formats I want.

Cons: I ordered the combo with the Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJB 500GB drive. Turns out that drive has problems with the 4000U (according to MVixUSA Tech Support). They recommended using Seagate or Maxtor drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product.

Pros: Great Product.

Cons: None. If you are willing to spend some more money, you may want to look at one that can do wireless or HD playback.
(Mvix 760 HD or Tvix 4100/5100)

Other Thoughts: The M4000U Mvix is not intended for HD or wireless playback (Any "idiot" can look at its specifications online before buying it :)
However, I like XBMC too, since the project features a python script engine (I am a python programmer and think writing up python widgets are cool).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good solid feel to the hardware, have not upgraded to newer firmware, have not run into any issues. With 320GB HD, holds equiv of 200+ movies easily. Plays back xvid AVIs and raw DVD files, but also Nero recode MP4s. Device also allows use of directory structures for organizing content.

Cons: Only desirable feature for me would be ability to connect external HDs to device via slave USB; this would allow swapping between movie libraries easily.

Other Thoughts: Network connectivity not an issue for me - don't want to move things around that much or have the concerns that go with being attached to a network. Device has standard 12V external pwr supply and standard USB connectors - nothing proprietary to lose or break.

1 out of 5 eggsUseless Device

Pros: Plays all standard def formats. Automatically senses computers on the network and adds the shared drives. Ideal for computer novices.

Cons: HD Transport Files do not playback, locally or via network. No H.264 support, cannot transfer files via network (at this time). No advanced features or config/setup, this is designed for the brain dead idiot user.

Other Thoughts: I had this device for about 3 days before I had to return it. My modified Xbox running XBMC was far more advanced and played back HD files better, but at 10fps. If your familiar with MCE or XBMC, then this device is NOT for you. I bought this mostly for HD playback and was obviously disappointed when it couldn't handle standard .TS files.

4 out of 5 eggsThis is what I was looking for

Pros: Play the formats I wanted it to play. Setup was easy and the whole interface is really straight forward. I have two younger children who were using dvd's for small frisbee's (not really but you get the idea) It took me about 10 minutes to teach them the remote and they use it to watch their favorites. I am happy with the performance so far and will probably buy another for the rec room.

Cons: I wish it had ethernet as the USB transfers are slow and tedious. I wish the remote had bigger buttons but are still acceptable.

Other Thoughts: Was worth the money for what it delivers!!
