Cavepainting the Mona Lisa
- Pros: Plays all formats promised.....
If you want to show off that digital media collection using GUI that screams "I built it in woodshop!" - go for it. Digital media meets VCR GUI - again! Wahooooo!
- Cons: *Commodore 64 looking menus/screens. Worse than even the MediaLounge 520 (and that's pretty bad).
*Poorest PHOTO display quality I've ever seen on a DMP device - blurred and completely dropped contrast to almost sickening color loss, regardless of source quality. *Audio files played average, but alas, menus are made of Legos or done in MS Paint. Gigantic icons, fonts. File names are not driven through ID3 tags, but actual file names, ie: "013_Artist-Title.mp3". duh? *Video playback starts with some goofy bad translation/salutation - then, suddenly - I now see this irritating black bar on the left of the screen and white noise at the top. ALL files did this, changing aspect was the only fix - and by-the-way, rebooting sometimes fixed the problem... ahem...riiight. *QUESTION the whole 1080p thing here - 1080p never looked so "average". Played same digital source files on PS3 - lol - not even close. Beginning to wonder what "HD" stands for at MViX.. "Hard Drive"?- - ah, my mistake.
- Other Thoughts: Virtually any gains I found were completely lost by this gdawful menu system - you aren't going to believe it.
Assumed somewhere it'd get better - maybe granular controls/refinement of at least media tags or playback options/visualizations - ha, NOPE. For the 325$ plus a hard drive,I'm over the 399$ cost of a PS3, that while not perfect, it's by far the best DMP solution in my price range. With DLNA capability - and the best menus I've ever seen, it'll be hard to beat when new format support comes in Q4. Not a Sony fan - I actually hate the company - just this PS3 is really nice for digital media. XB0X with mod chips are nice, too - just no output for higher def - and way too noisy. To date, still not a single of the following I've owned are there - this Mvix by far get's the "idea" with format play support - but falls very short on elegance and features. Other losers: HTPC MediaLab/iMedian, RF OmniFi DMP1/S1, DL MediaLounge 320 & 520, HP DMR ew5000. Waste of money.
Very Impressed
- Pros: Man... I am very impressed with this player... I have lot of music and movies that I keep on my computer and I hated having to burn them on CD to make VCD or DVD to play it on my DVD player... I also have several HiDef Discovery channel movies that I had no way of burning on to a 4.5GB DVD and still have the same level of quality... This player allowed me to watch this movie with original quality on my big screen... and it looks awesome. I have also tried to take this with me on my travel and let me tell you... its a life saver... loved having all of my movies on the go w/ me.
- Cons: I don't think there are any major cons per say...but would love some more upgrades in the product... such as a capability to integrate utube and other online channels for movies... I call them any they told me that they are working on launching a new product... didnt know when though...
- Other Thoughts: I think this is an awesome device for movie lover and people who care about movies and want to keep them for a long time... by keeping it on hard drive rather then burning on a disk (which you could easily loose if it gets scratched)

not a good choice
- Pros: networking capability (wired and wireless), small and qiet
- Cons: It does not meeting minimum standard as consumer product. My MKV and TS files would not play at all while other player softwares play it perfectly. It hangs very often. Basically, if it plays a file I am afraid to touch any button on the remote as it can hang the player. Once it is hung, unplug the power is the only choice to bring it back.
- Other Thoughts: Better to buy a laptop with HDMI interface to play HD movies.
- Pros: Great concept and plays all audio/video formats that I'm interested in. Mainly DVD (vob)
- Cons: Reliability is not good. My six month old 780 is now making it's second trip back for repair.
Does not have fast advance through long play listings.
- Other Thoughts: I also had a Mvix 760, the first one died within two days, the second one died just after one year warranty ran out. Service department will not repair this box if major problem but will sell me a refurbed unit at a cheaper price.
Works as advertised.
- Pros: Plays a wide array of formats well. Fast-forwarding/rewinding is excellent...there are no awkard skips or 'catch-ups' and when you hit play it goes back a bit just like Tivo.
Network setup was a breeze as was setting up the NDAS...I run OSX and the whole process couldn't have been easier. Internet radio is great when you want to hear something new or need some background music for a party.
Installing the harddrive was easy and I love having the extra USB ports to plug in thumb drives or any of my externals. I don't have a Hi-Def TV yet but I love having all the outputs available so that when I upgrade this device will work with the new setup.
Transferring files is fast when plugged into USB and not as slow as I expected when sending over the wireless network through NDAS. It's fantastic to mount the drive and have it appear on my desktop while it's plugged into my TV downstairs.
- Cons: The menu system is pretty ugly and the remote has to be pointed directly at the device for it to work. The menu system can be slow sometimes but seems to speed back up after bit (I think this has to do with caching the folder's contents.)
Can't fast forward with music but that doesn't really bother me as I use this solely for playing videos. No audio visualizer for audio either...which would really come in handy when having the internet radio playing in the background.
- Other Thoughts: Aside from the ugly/kinda slow menu system this device is AMAZING. I had a cheapo DIVX capable DVD player for a while and was so glad I put down the extra money to have all my video files in one place (not to mention that I don't have to keep burning discs, either).
All my gripes with this device are with things that can be corrected with future firmware updates and hopefully they'll add YouTube/Hulu video support in addition to the cosmetic and performance upgrades I mentioned earlier.
If you're looking for a way to have all your video files available on your television and off of your computer's cramped harddrive it'll be hard to beat this for the price.
