5 out of 5 eggsXBMCbuntu

Pros: Size
Power Consumption

Cons: Wireless
HDMI Audio / Linux driver support

Other Thoughts: I bought this with the sole intention of being an XBMC box. This is what my review will focus on.
This replaced an AMD/ATi home built HTPC as it was no longer capable of playing full 1080p content smoothly. This little box has nearly perfect XBMC Live/buntu compatibility. The only shortcomings were the wireless interface and HDMI audio passthrough. With a bit of linux knowhow (or googling) they are both relatively easy to overcome. I personally opted to run a wireless N bridge on DD-WRT to reach my media center (XBOX, HTPC, Receiver all connected).

Overall, this thing streams extremely high bitrate 1080p content over my local network without ever blinking. If you're looking for a low-power, low-footprint HTPC solution, you've found it.

4 out of 5 eggsAcer AspireRevo 3700-3002

Pros: Works well out of the box, setup was easy and it runs Win 7 pretty well. Currently using it as a Minecraft server, which it does well, though after the 1.2.4 update I am upgrading to 4gb of ram, as it has put a greater demand on it. Streams video well from netflix.

Cons: Has the standard shovelware on it from Acer, most of which is easy enough to remove to get the speed up. If coding the compile time is noticeable compared to a full desktop but what do you expect.

Other Thoughts: Happy with this purchase, be sure to note that the mouse dongle is inside the battery compartment, as that is not stated anywhere.

4 out of 5 eggsDifficult Hardware to upgrade

Pros: Great little silent box to sit behind the TV, etc. I bought mine to be a squid proxy server to limit the kids internet access. Works great for that. Installed Centos6 Linux without a hitch, Ethernet and Video just worked.

Cons: Difficult to upgrade hardware. Only comes with 2GB DDR3 and a regular HDD. Opening the case required a YouTube lookup and lots of plastic prying with a screwdriver. Broke some plastic retainer tabs in the process. Once the case was open, upgrading the SODIMM DDR3 RAMs from 2GB to 4GB was easy ( and inexpensive ). Upgrading the HD to an SSD was hard. The entire motherboard and daughterboards had to be removed to get to the screws that hold the HDD in place.

Other Thoughts: Note: Requires a HDMI to DVI adapter cable for a DVI only monitor. I had one and the HDMI port worked just fine for DVI.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Good and The Bad

Pros: The pros are the obvious physical features about it. It's small, and I hadn't realized when I bought it, but I can mount it behind a monitor so it's even more out of the way.

Cons: I don't normally buy manufactured computers anyway, I'd prefer buying my own parts and putting it together myself, but my computer hating boss wanted me to pick one out for his office, and probably my biggest gripe is the amount of software preloaded on this thing. Skype, Norton, McAfee, e-bay, Bing, Evernote, Netflix, Nook, Nero, then all the Acer bloatware of videogames, tours, programs and games for children and the list goes on. That by far would be my biggest complaint setting this thing up for my boss.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great little pc for streaming videos and as internet tv connection. Have used it everyday for over a year with no problems.Very quite and uses very little power, and being a off grid and solar powered home this is a little unit. Great value for the price.

Cons: Only came with 2g of ram and locating the little doggle for the wireless keyboard was frustrating as the included instructions are not very clear.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent HTPC with limitations

Pros: - Whisper-quiet, sleek design that fits well into even the simplest entertainment centers with a minimum of wires and clutter
- Can handle most HD video easily
- Wireless kb/mouse is also simple and unobtrusive for you neat freaks
- Lots of ports including several USB and HDMI

Cons: - Should really come with 4 GB RAM instead of 2. Upgrading is neither difficult nor expensive, however.
- The internal Wi-Fi is incredibly weak. Hook it up wired or use a USB dongle.
- Loaded with bloatware
- After extensive configuration attempts, this machine simply cannot handle fullscreen Flash video that's not encoded in h.264. Youtube 1080p works fine, but other sites that deliver Flash video end up overloading the GPU and causing dropped frames and vertical tearing.

Other Thoughts: Hugely disappointed in the Flash issues, but otherwise a capable machine after some intervention from the end-user.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for XBMC on Linux

Pros: This is the perfect little computer on which to run XBMC. Ability to mount to the back of a monitor/TV is great and my media center is hidden away. It is silent and runs flawlessly day after day. Get this if you want an XBMC setup.

Cons: keyboard and mouse are extremely cheap but given that I had no intention of using them, I didn't think it warranted taking an egg off. Although, I not plan on building a wireless SNES controller using the keyboard internals and usb adapter.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent after cleanout and more RAM

Pros: This computer is actually pretty fast for what you are buying, but it really needs 4GB of RAM (maximum allowed). Runs server 2008R2 for basic testing and course work which is why I bought them. Good at around $320. XBMC seems to be the recommended media center player, seems to work fairly well for youtube on a large 1920x1080 display with HDMI connection.

Cons: Needs a faster hard drive, needs to come with 4GB of RAM, needs to come with less junk installed so it will run fast when you first start using it. $350 is really too high for this device. Would have been 5 stars with more ram and less garbage installed.

Other Thoughts: Waiting for the price to come down from $350 again to get a couple more of these. Don't forget blank DVD disks, you'll need these to create the backup/recovery disks this is kind of standard with Acer now.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Starter HTPC

Pros: Small
Energy efficient
Built-in wifi
Comes with wireless mouse & keyboard
Plays older games decently
Plays 1080p video

Cons: Difficult to open to upgrade
Cheap harddrive that died in a year
Only supports 4 GB's of ram
Tends to overheat

Other Thoughts: It's a good starter HTPC for a home entertainment system but there are far better systems out there for the same price range. The best features it boasts are the built-in wireless features and the Nvidia ION2 GPU which runs 1080p video quite nicely. The case is just too compact, causes some minor overheating issues during high stress periods and upgrades are a pain due to the low quality oem case design.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far A Great Buy

Pros: Low Cost
Windows 7
Low power consumption
When properly updated, optimized and customized it plays EVERYTHING.

Cons: tons of bloatware to remove
everything must be updated
2gig RAM

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace my Popcorn hour in the living room. So far for this its been great. I removed all of the bloatware and updated all the drivers first (~2hrs). Backed up the files and dropped in 4gigs of ram i picked up here for $13. Primarily using WMC right now and am happy with it. Added MediaBrowser and Shark007 codecs to get everything playing nice with each other. This will take a bit of work, but the walk through is ample and it has played everything I have thrown at it since. HippoRemote Pro is a great app if you have an iphone or ipad. It studders a bit with Hulu desktop, but I think that is more because of the beta. Hulu through Chrome works perfectly as does Netflix. I am thinking of paring it with a SiliconDust USB cable card next and giving it a test with Fios. One oddity though, when I popped open the case to put the ram in, I noticed the HD is 320GB. The profile says 250GB so I'm not complaining but I thought it was odd.
